Stage Crafters BACKSTAGE NORTHWEST FLORIDA TRI-COUNTY’S #1 COMMUNITY THEATRE L OCTOBER 2014 etter from the President Here we are again at the end of the season, the last show is well into rehearsal and we are looking forward to performing this show for you in November. The cast is amazing! So many new people have joined us on stage and backstage for this one, it is turning out to be a wonderful experience. We have been working hard getting the warehouse cleaned up for the start of another season, new board and new adventures. The annual meeting is close approaching, it will be December 4 at the warehouse, please join us to vote on the new executive board and the announcing of our 2015 season. Funny how the year has just flown by, it seems to move faster each year. Seems that we just finished the planning for 2014 and it is coming to its close. We have seen many changes this year, much of those a direct result of an amazing group of volunteers dedicated to the continued success of Stage Crafters. It is with great appreciation that I thank each and every one of these folks for their contributions of time, funds, materials and blood, sweat and tears. Of course, all a labor of love, but we have all worked hard to keep things going in the right direction. I would like to mention a very special thanks to the Emerald Coast Concert Association for their donation of stage material and the most generous monetary contribution of $5,000.00. We were all bowled over by the very generous and well needed gift. In addition, we have had two individual contributions of $1,000.00. Each of these folks have asked to be anonymous, so you know who you are and we truly thank both of you for your generosity. Remember, please that we are your community theatre and without the community we are just a bunch of folks who pretend to be something else for no one in particular. We are always in need of volunteers and helpers. You may think that you don’t have the time or the strength but we need all kinds of help, from stuffing envelopes to building sets. Often an hour of your time is all that we need and that is a contribution that is so appreciated, one hour of your time cuts work time abundantly and that is always a good thing. It let’s some of us do laundry, clean the house or even eat dinner at a reasonable hour. Please keep that in mind if you are looking for something to do, we put events on our facebook page so follow us there for upcoming events. The next big one will be ballot mailings, HELP IS ALWAYS needed for this one. Okay, so ranting over and on to more exciting things. Again, THANKS to all of our volunteers, supporters and the community. SEE YOU AT THE THEATRE! Pamela J. Strecker President ANNUAL BANQUET NEWS The Annual Awards Banquet date is set for Saturday, January 24, 2015. Tickets will be $40.00 per person and it is absolutely worth it. STAGE CRAFTERS, A HISTORICAL VIEW 1988 is where we are in our continuing historical journey. Gas per gallon was .91 cents. Oh, how things have changed! It is the year that the Hubble Space Telescope was put into operation and we have certainly witnessed some amazing images over the years from the Hubble. 1988 saw the tragedy of the Pan-Am flight being shot down over Lockerbie Scotland, killing all onboard. It was the year that the Iran-Iraq war finally ended after 8 years, Hmmmmph. I had to ponder that one for a moment. The films of the day were “Rain Man”, “Beetlejuice” and “A Fish called Wanda”. Enya, U2 and Guns and Roses filled our radio airwaves. The Theatre saw the premiere of Neil Simons’ “Rumors”, “Phantom of the Opera” opened in NYC for 4000 performances and “Les Mis” opened in Oslo, Japan and the United States. Flo-Jo was breaking all kinds of records and Mike Tyson’s marriage woes were filling the gossip pages. Mayor Ed Koch called President Reagan a WIMP! Jimmy the Greek was fired from CBS for racial remarks; well things have not changed all that much, have they? Biggest news event I could see for 1988 was the year that MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL premiered on Television. Stage Crafters performed 5 shows that year, “Charley’s Aunt”, “Octette Bridge Club”, “Inherit the Wind”, “Move Over Mrs. Markham” and “Annie Get Your Gun”. Walt Steigleman won best actor for his role in “Inherit the Wind” and best show was won by “Annie Get Your Gun” directed by Walt Steigleman. Walt was also the incoming President that year. It is always interesting how things fall when I put this information together. It was a bit saddening to see all that Walt did in the year we highlight as we lost Walt this year and Stage Crafters mourns his passing.
