Dr Downs said.
“We have persisted with this study come thick
or thin in terms of funding, and throughout the
20 years we have tracked almost every girl in
the country with Rett syndrome.
“We now have the best epidemiology there
is to know about Rett syndrome and how it
presents and how it changes over time, and
we are starting to understand the effectiveness
of treatments.
“We are unique because we have a population and that gives us extraordinary power
to understand the true variability of Rett
syndrome.
“We work tirelessly to get funds and we
get knocked back many more times than we
succeed.”
Dr Downs said there was no cure. Parents
and carers manage the symptoms and support
the girls with as much physical activity as possible to ensure the best body health.
“The more they walk, the more the girls will
be able to withstand the onset of contractions
and deformity,” Dr Downs said.
“We also are investigating how to manage
feeding difficulties and how best to manage
scoliosis if that eventuates.”
Dr Downs said early diagnosis and intervention changed the outcomes for girls.
“What is extraordinary about Rett syndrome
is that children are developing quite normally
and then they lose skills,” she said.
“But they do keep their ability to choose and
they can use their eyes to point to things – it’s
called eye gaze.
“The girls can have very strong lines of communication with the people they are engaging
with in their daily lives and that is an extraordinary plus for those girls.”
