“That’s discretionary money spent in
Geraldton shops and businesses, keeping the
money flowing and the local economy going.
“It’s accepted that each dollar circulating in
a community gets spent five or six times.
“This means that taking into account the
multiplier effect, $97.5 million has been lost
to Geraldton.
“No wonder 17 shops in Marine Terrace have
closed in that time.”
He said that since the council had been enlarged the mayor and his wife had been sent
on study trips to China and Japan.
“Claremont’s travel expenses last year were
$600,” Mr Barker chimed in.
Mr Correy replied: “Ask Colin Barnett to give
you an example of a merged council where the
people are happy.
“I’ve been to other merged councils around
Australia and I can tell him he won’t find
one.”
Congerton job bid

replace councils sacked while mergers are in
progress.
The ABC reported this week that they are
paid between $60,000 and $130,000 a year.
ABC news also reported that Mr Congerton
was a long-term member of the Liberal
Party.
State Cabinet accepted most of the recommendations made by the Local Government
Advisory Board, that Mr Congerton chairs, to
slash the number of councils from 30 to 16.
Mr Simpson said the email was inappropriate
but did not show a conflict of interest. There
was no way Mr Congerton would be made a
commissioner while he was minister.
Mr Congerton told the ABC the email was
“banter” that in hindsight was probably inappropriate of him to have put it in writing.
Alleged conflict of interest within the LGAB is
one of the grounds pleaded in a court challenge
to the mergers, initiated by Vincent resident
Ian Ker and now led by the City of Subiaco
and supported by other councils.
