ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY
“Doing good for others”…
In this Sunday’s Gospel, we find the truth that loving
God isn’t merely a matter of fervor in our hearts, but
must be expressed in doing good for the sake of others.
This month, through your gifts, the SVDP Society was
able to show that we indeed love our neighbors by assisting
families, providing food, helping with utility and rent bills, etc.
Thank You!

My Dear Parishioners,
Today, at St. Agnes Cathedral, Bishop Murphy will present the St. Agnes Medal to
representatives from every parish in the diocese of Rockville Centre at a prayer service.
This medal is awarded to dedicated men and women who have volunteered their time in
extraordinary service in parish ministry.
This year, our honorees are a married couple, Jo and George Herron. The Herrons are
long-time parishioners who raised their family in Valley Stream. Their children attended our
parish school, and Jo and George were involved in every aspect of parish life, participating in and
supporting all academic, athletic, and fund-raising activities for both the school and the church.
George is a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, visiting and distributing food to those in
need in our community. In addition, he is a dedicated EM, serving both at Mass and bringing
Communion to the homebound. George also serves the parish as a sacristan, paying attention to
the many details that make our liturgies run smoothly. Jo was a faithful member of our Rosary
Society and Catholic Daughters, and she continues to serve the parish as a member of the
Ministry of Consolation and by laundering and ironing the many altar linens used at Mass.
Both Jo and George are the backbone of our parish volunteers, offering to do things big and
small to make our parish thrive. They are a loving and devoted couple who have been married
56 years, a true role model for all married couples.
With joy and gratitude, I congratulate Jo and George Herron for their service to our
parish. May God bless them for their generosity.

Something good is cooking at Holy Name of Mary!
Love to bake?
Love to share?
This may be for you.
The people who receive food every month from Parish Outreach-St. Vincent DePaul Society are ever so
grateful for the home baked cookies donated by our parishioners every Thanksgiving, Christmas and
Easter. Many of those recipients cannot bake for themselves. In order to extend, this much appreciated
act of personal generosity throughout the year, a parish group was formed.
The devoted members of the “Bakers Bunch” have been supplying the Parish food pantry with home
baked goods throughout the year. Participation in this team involves baking a simple item at your
own pace---once a month, once every two months, twice a month----whatever fits your schedule.
Items may be cookies, muffins, bundt/loaf cake, quick bread, any item that does not need refrigeration.
There are 95 families who receive some food every month so any contribution would help. Groups are
also invited to participate. If you are interested or would like more information please call Felicia Lotti
at 516-812-9110. You may also fill out the information below and return it to Parish Outreach.

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Walk By Faith
One of the recurring questions I have been asked over the years revolves around the Eucharist,
and the way that our fellow Christians celebrate this Sacrament. Perhaps the most obvious difference
in the ways we approach Holy Communion is in whether a Tabernacle is present in a church or not.
As Catholics, along with the Eastern Orthodox, we reserve part of the consecrated hosts after the
celebration of the Mass, a practice that began early on in the Church’s history, when It was kept for
those who were unable to attend Mass because of illness or infirmity; a practice that has continued to
this day. Since we recognize that the bread and wine offered on the altar becomes, upon the words of
consecration offered by the priest, the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, what has not been consumed is
reserved for the sick, and also for practical reasons, for the next Mass. The reservation of the Blessed
Sacrament led to the adoration of the Eucharist over a short period, and that is why we come before
the Tabernacle and pray to the Real Presence of Christ contained therein, and why we still genuflect
when passing before it.
Closest to our own Theology of the Eucharist, which is Transubstantion, is that of the
Lutherans, who believe in Consubstantion. Transubstantiation, put simply is that the bread and wine,
while keeping their physical properties, have actually become the Body of Christ; as St. Thomas
Aquinas so poetically put it: Præstet fides supplementum, Sensuum defectui (Let faith provide a supplement, For the failure of the senses). The Consubstantiation of the Lutherans places the Real Presence
of Jesus Christ with the bread and the wine, and even though they believe in the Real Presence, they
do not reserve the Eucharist afterward. Anglicans, including Episcopalians, whom many people
mistakenly believe to be close to Catholics, believe that Communion is a symbol; which it is in those
traditions which do not have validly ordained priests to celebrate the Mass.
As Catholics, we focus our attention on the celebration of the Eucharist, as It is confected
upon the Altar, recognizing that it is from this Sacrament that we receive the fullness of God’s Grace,
since this is when we receive God Himself. Unfortunately, there are times when some of our brothers
and sisters have failed to recognize this as the Source and Summit of our Faith, or have even brought
in Protestant practices, that at best water down and at worst deny the significance of what we
celebrate. Recently, I had the opportunity to celebrate the Mass at another Catholic Church, where
the practice of coming in front of the Altar during the Our Father was introduced long ago. While
I can respect the desire of the priest who instituted this practice, to inspire a sense of community
among the congregation, the fact is that he was wrong. Our focus must remain on the Blessed
Sacrament, which rests upon the altar we have gathered around, it is through this Sacrament that we
become the Community of Believers; through the reception of this sacrament that we become what
we receive, the Body of Christ. Not to harp on that parish’s tradition of the priest coming in front of
the altar, but what obviously sprang from a post-Vatican II desire to make the celebration of the Mass
more inclusive for the Faithful, is in fact a turning one’s back on the reason why everybody came to
the Mass. One of the most influential changes of Vatican II was that the priest celebrates the Mass
while the people are gathered around the Altar, which makes real for us that First Mass celebrated by
Jesus Himself, as He shared His Body and Blood with those who had gathered with Him in the Upper
Room. It is also a reminder to us, to pray that the Communion we share with each other, will
someday be shared with all of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Pax, Fr. Henry

MINISTERIO
HISPANO
Fr. Fernando Echeverri
www.hnom.org/latino.htm
LA IDENTIDAD CRISTIANA: LOS DOS
AMORES.
exclusivo.
No podemos decir que amamos a Dios a quien no
vemos, si no amamos al hermano
que si vemos, para Jesus hay cosas bien claras en lo
que se refiere al amor al prójimo;
nuestro destino final y eterno.
VIDA?
