Join our Advocacy Alert Network. When an issue
impacting breast cancer patients is being considered on
Capitol Hill or in the Georgia General Assembly, we
distribute email alerts asking Georgians to contact their
legislators. If you haven't already joined our network,
please take a moment to do so. And grab a few friends and
ask them to join you. When we send out our next Advocacy
Alert, make the call to your legislators. You'll be making a
REAL difference for Georgian women!
Sign the Presidential Petition to END Breast Cancer! As
part of a national effort, we are collecting 8,907 Georgian
signatures on a Petition for the President. These signatures
will be added to those that other states are collecting, and
the National Breast Cancer Coalition will deliver all
290,000 signatures to the President on Inauguration Day in
January 2013. This is an easy way to say you stand behind
ending breast cancer once and for all! Make sure you share
this link to sign the petition electronically with all of your
friends and colleagues!
Plan an educational breast cancer event.There are many
breast cancer fundraisers--walks and runs, and shopping and
sporting events. This season, we urge you to take your
support one step further and become informed. Attend an
educational event to learn more about this disease, or even
better, contact us to help you plan one in your community!

GBCCF Awarded Breast Cancer License Tag Grant
In June, GBCCF was awarded a $35,000 grant to educate
underserved populations in 10 counties including: Chatham,
Cherokee, Cobb, Dougherty, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall
and Macon. Workshops funded under the grant will provide
essential information and local resources about breast cancer
screening, access to quality care and treatment services. GBCCF
will provide the workshops to low-income, underinsured and
uninsured Georgians in these counties. The grant was one of 13
awarded to organizations offering breast cancer health promotion,
screening and treatment to indigent women. Grant funds,
facilitated by the Georgia Cancer Coalition and the Department of
Community Health, are raised through the sale of Georgia's breast
cancer license plate. Since 2003, more than $2 million has been
awarded to local organizations in Georgia.
Macon, Albany Advocacy Workshops A Success
Earlier this month, GBCCF hosted two
advocacy workshops in Macon and
Albany. Led by GBCCF Lobbyist, Linda
Lowe and Executive Director, Amy
Upchurch, the workshops armed
attendees with essential tools to
advocate for breast cancer legislation at
the state and national levels.
In Macon, advocates were joined by Georgia State Senator Miriam
Paris (D-26), pictured above. In Albany, Georgia State Senator,
Freddie Powell Sims (D-12); Albany Mayor, Dorothy Hubbard;
District Health 8 Director, Dr. Jacqueline Grant; interventional
radiologist, Dr. Lorenzo Carson; and Mr. Kenneth Cutts, District
Director for Congressman Sanford Bishop's (D-2) office, addressed
the crowd. Both the Macon and Albany workshops were made
possible through a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
grant to the Morehouse School of Medicine.
Pink Cork Gala Raises $11,000
More than 150 people attended our Pink Cork Wine Tasting last
May. GBCCF raised $11,000 to support our education and
advocacy efforts in Georgia. The Board of Directors would like to
thank all those who attended, and especially those who
contributed time and financial support of the event. Please make
sure to join us for our Second Annual Pink Cork Gala on Saturday,
March 23, 2013.

In September, 2010, the National Breast Cancer
Coalition (NBCC) launched a bold campaign to END
breast cancer by January 1, 2020. This month,
NBCC released its second annual Progress Report
on the state of breast cancer.
While little has changed in the prevention,
treatment or curing of breast cancer, NBCC has
done significant and substantial work in the past
year:
NBCC and its advocates introduced the Accelerating the
End of Breast Cancer Act in the House of Representatives
last fall. In May, the Act (S. 3237) was introduced in the
Senate by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), along with
Senators Collins (R-ME), Brown (D-OH), Murkowski (R-AK),
Shaheen (D-NH), Heller (R-NV), Warner (D-VA) and Grassley
(R-IA). Similar to the House bill, HR 3067, the Senate bill
focuses on the primary prevention of breast cancer and
preventing breast cancer metastasis. It also creates the
Commission to Accelerate the End of Breast Cancer, which
would be tasked with identifying promising opportunities,
tools, technology and ideas not currently being prioritized
for breast cancer by the public and private sectors, but
which, taken together and applied to this issue, hold true
promise in ending breast cancer. For more information,

NBCC and its advocates applauded the Supreme Court's
decision affirming the constitutionality of the "Affordable
Care Act" (ACA) and consider it a victory for breast cancer
survivors and all those at risk of the disease. While not
perfect, the ACA offers true protection from many of the
shortcomings of the health care system and marks an
important step forward toward quality health care for all.
Access to quality health care is vital in order to reach the
Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® goal of ending breast cancer
by January 1, 2020. The Supreme Court's decision provides
momentum toward this goal:
For breast cancer survivors, upholding the ACA means:
No Pre-Existing Conditions - Beginning in 2014, group
health plans and new individual plans will no longer
be able to exclude breast cancer survivors from
coverage or charge them a higher premium by
defining breast cancer as a pre-existing condition.
Lifetime and Annual Caps - Health insurance plans
are prohibited from imposing lifetime caps on
benefits, and the use of annual dollar limits is
restricted. Beginning in 2014, annual limits will also
be banned.
No Rescission - Insurers can no longer cancel a breast
cancer survivor's insurance policy when she or he
needs it most.
No Discrimination - Beginning in 2014, no longer will
insurance plans be allowed to charge more simply
because of gender, health status, location or
participation in a clinical trial.
Other Protections - Access to internal and external
appeals processes; access to clear and standardized
information about insurance options through a new
web portal as well as through state-based health care
consumer assistance programs; and the right to
designate or retain a primary care provider.
The ACA also means that patients will continue to
have a voice in the process. Under the ACA,
educated health care consumers will have an
opportunity to play a role in a range of decision
making bodies implementing health care reform.
On September 20, 2010, the National Breast
Cancer Coalition (NBCC) launched Breast
Cancer Deadline 2020 ®, a deadline and
strategic plan of action to end breast cancer
by January 1, 2020. We must all change our
behavior if we are to end this disease. That's
why we need your support!
We are working to gather 8,907 Georgian
signatures to be delivered to the President
on Inauguration Day in 2013. Why 8,907 signatures? Because that's
how many women (and men) in Georgia will be diagnosed with
breast cancer this year.

All women are at risk for developing breast cancer. In fact, one in
eight women will experience breast cancer in her lifetime. This
disease is devastating to women, their families and our
communities.
GBCCF was formed by three breast cancer survivors who came
together for a common cause--to fight to eliminate breast cancer.
Since 1994, GBCCF has been instrumental in breast cancer
education and advocacy.

public about all aspects of this devastating disease: the
importance of early detection, lifestyle changes, treatment
and research;
GBCCF advocates at the state and national levels for
increased breast cancer research funding, health care reform
and breast cancer legislation that will be of benefit to all;
Through our collaborative efforts with the National Breast Cancer
Coalition and other breast cancer advocates, dollars earmarked for
breast cancer research have quadrupled and the fight to eradicate
breast cancer has been brought to the forefront of the public's
awareness.
