The rescue and restoration of the Ewart Duggan house from possible decay led to recreating its garden. This did not mean just planting a few flowers and ignoring the shrubs and bushes. The garden, if it was to be true to its original owners’ spirit, had to be researched with great care. The garden care has been accepted by a group of enthusiastic people devoted to gardening. Malcolm Sissons, whose family’s first bricks became part of the house, is a dedicated member of these green thumbs. He made sure to say that he was not one of the more talented green thumbs but could be counted on for work that did not require a highly developed esthetic talent. This group formed a committee, which works, as committees do, to achieve a common goal. There was planning, which meant researching what the original garden looked like, and what plants and trees were used in it. The archives at the Esplanade had photographs that gave them a place to begin. There was a white picket fence in front of the house and five trees visible. Two ladies in white dresses pose for a camera. The dresses are likely to have hinted at the 1910 date. So, I did a little research, and checked out the 1910 Medicine Hat newspaper. Yes, those dresses are about right for 1910. I spent several hours checking for the Duggan name to appear in the pages of the Medicine Hat News. The newspaper is digitized and available online from the late 1800s to 1922. I did not find ref- The Esplanade Archives provided this fascinating photo of the Ewart Duggan House and yard in 1910. erence to the Duggans, but did find advertisements for ladies’ and gentlemen’s clothing. The dresses were just like those of the ladies on the lawn in front of the Ewart Duggan house. Look at these newspapers yourselves by going to Our Future Our Past, and then clicking on Early Alberta Newspapers. You can spend hours finding out what was happening in Medicine Hat and the world at that time – hot off the press. You might not find what you are looking for, but you will always find something of interest and value. Perhaps it is the same with a garden. When the project to recreate the Ewart Duggan garden as nearly to the original was begun, there were plants that had no place there, that had come from another decade. Chokecherries were choking out much of the garden and volunteers removed all but one bush. In the first year of work the spruce trees, whose roots were threatening the somewhat fragile foundations of the house, had to be removed. As the work progressed, individuals adopted a particular flowerbed to tend. Volunteers did more research to determine what plants were grown in gardens in that era. Malcolm Sissons and family donated part of their rhubarb. It was almost certain that this source of fruit, a hardy plant, would have been in the garden. The plant that came from Malcolm’s garden was a portion of his parents’ plant, which had been a part of his grandparents’ original plant and had grown in the garden beside that of the Ewart Duggan house. The picture above shows the white picket fence next to the sidewalk. This romantic tradition had to become part of the context of the Continued on page 6 Community Realty Medicine Hat, AB Res: 403-527-1011 Page 2, THE MEDICINE HAT SHOPPER, Week of October 25, 2014 Visit The Ultimate Classified Website At www.shoppergroup.com Offers subject to change without notice. Phone: (403) 9526075 Donna Rae We have been handing out candy at Halloween for many decades but the research that is now coming through is leading us to believe that we are actually hurting our children a lot more than we thought. Everyone has cut back a little on how much candy their children should have at Halloween, but perhaps in light of new evidence, they shouldn't have any. Ingredients of candy includes: high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, food dyes, preservatives, artificial flavorings and GMO's. If you want deeper information: www.care2.com/greenliving/6-ingredients-to-avoid-when-you-buyhalloween-candy.html#ixzz3FcRrVZAe. Let's put this into perspective. With all the serious viral infections, autism, ADD, and other child disorders, do we really need this onslaught to make things worse? By far, sugar is the worst culprit. It suppresses the immune system, causes copper deficiency, interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium, causes hypoglycemia and diabetes, leads to an acidic digestive tract, chromium deficiency and a whole host of other problems. www.nancyappleton.com/141-reasons-sugarruins-your-health/ It is difficult to tell children, no more halloween, but perhaps we can change it up a bit. They can still dress up, but we can give them little presents to play with, or toys instead of candy. There are lots of things at the dollar stores that can be obtained to give out and these things last and can be used for a long time. Amish isn’t a style. It’s a standard of excellence - desired by many and practiced by a very rare few. It’s in the fine details of solid hardwood drawers, finished inside and out to protect delicate clothing from damage. It’s in the skill of genuine Amish craftsmen, faithfully passed down from one generation to the next. But most of all, it’s in the beauty of America’s richest hardwoods, handcrafted in a thousand different styles - from country cabinets that are the hallmark of Americana, to contemporary designs that say, “Move over, Herman Miller, the Amish are in the house.” With Simply Amish furniture, you’re the ultimate designer. We make recommendations, but you make the call - choosing the wood, stain and hardware that make your selection complete. We’ll even work with you beyond the options you see in this catalog, giving you the ability to create a wooden work of art that’s truly one of a kind. Your Furniture. Your Way. When we say “custom-built” we mean it. At Simply Amish, you choose the wood, the stain and every other element that goes into making your selection unique. We don’t start construction until we receive your order. From that point forward, your job is tracked by your name, so that each craftsman knows the person they’re building for. And in the rare event that your furniture becomes damaged or needs to be repaired, we’ll return it to its original maker, to be restored to the way it looked the day it left his shop. #4 - 645 South Railway Street SE Open Mon to Fri 8am - 5pm, Sat 9am - 4pm Phone 403-527-990 Fax 403-529-6380 www.mainfloorcarpets.com Free 1 on 1 consultation, design and estimate Personalized Cabinets LEASING & SUBSIDIES AVAILABLE THRU ENMAX Office: 403-581-6205 Fax: 403-548-3153 #8 - 1500 South Highway Dr., (AMRON Bldg) Redcliff www.heartstonecabinets.com Geothermal - Solar - Plumbing - Mechanical - High Efficiency Products www.terralta.net Terralta can help you lower your monthly electricity bills Photovoltaics (PV) systems make use of renewable energy from the sun to generate power. 557 - 18th St. SW Medicine Hat Call us today for a free consultation 403-488-0404 Page 8, THE MEDICINE HAT SHOPPER, Week of October 25, 2014 Visit The Ultimate Classified Website At www.shoppergroup.com NEED TOOLS TO COMPLETE YOUR RENOVATIONS? It focuses on core objectives of life safety, energy efficiency, and protects minimum standards for overall building performance. Proposed changes are reviewed for their impact in various climatic conditions across the country and against other considerations such as fire protection, durability, reliability, practical implementation, technology availability and cost. This is done to avoid an undue technical or economic impact to one region of the country by a proposed change. Whatever changes are made, those changes will have to make economic sense. They should demonstrate long term cost-effectiveness and protect affordability and choice for new home buyers. This process creates a level playing field for all builders and buyers across Canada. It also reduces self promotion and interference by special interest groups and product promoters that can add additional cost, unnecessary change, and other unintended consequences to the housing industry. Lastly, it gives an opportunity and a vehicle for broad stakeholder input and debate, and that is essential in any process. This shouldn’t take any jurisdiction by surprise. Codes are developed by the National Research Council in Ottawa as “model” codes and then reviewed and implemented by each of the provinces. Municipalities, builders, trade groups, manufacturers and other participate in the creation of the codes through special task groups, standing committees and consultations. For home builders, their major information transfer point is the Canadian Home Builders’ Association. When there are large changes to codes, such as increasing the energy efficiency of buildings, the industry will begin to respond to changes under discussion by experimenting with the best materials, methods and equipment to help the industry meet the needs of the code while still delivering reliable, durable, and cost effective homes for consumers. What they learn as they adapt will be fed into the Code process to help refine the code and head off any potential pitfalls. There is no question, it is important that codes be updated. That said, efforts need to focus not just on new homes, (a relatively small number of all homes built each year), but should include initiatives and incentives to improve and renovate the far larger universe of older homes - homes which have much lower energy and water efficiency. this sometimes gets lost, but code changes cannot create a standard that makes renovations cost prohibitive or forces those renovations underground. Let’s not fall into the trap that fast is better. Let’s take the time to do it right - everyone wins when that happens. You may have noticed different interests pushing for one thing or another that requires a change to the building codes. Seems everyone is in a hurry. Their issue cannot be dealt with fast enough, but sometimes being in too much of a hurry can create more problems than are solved. True enough, the building code process is a long and cumbersome one, but it is that way for some very good reasons. For startup owners, that competition can prove even more challenging. Successful startups often credit their initial marketing efforts as a linchpin of their evolution from startup to successful business. Marketing a startup involves careful consideration of a host of factors, and what's proven successful for one company will not necessarily produce similar results for another. But there are some elements of marketing a startup that owners can employ regardless of the type of business they're beginning. * Keep your initial focus narrow. Successful startups often start with a small target customer base and go from there. Though it can be tempting to market your business to any and all potential customers, targeting a small number of customers who are most likely to help you establish the business could be more in line with your initial meager marketing budget. Once those customers you initially targeted have helped you establish and grow your business, you can then consider targeting a broader customer base. * Use local media to your advantage. Local media can be a friend to startups if the owners of those startups allow them to be. Contact the local newspaper and local radio station to let them know your business is opening. Let local newspaper reporters try your product and write a review, and go on local radio to announce your grand opening, which should include some type of incentive (free food, product raffles, etc.) to attract potential customers. Local media benefits when local businesses thrive, so developing a partnership with local media early on can prove beneficial to your startup for years to come. * Use social media to your advantage. Traditional media isn't the only media startup owners 5 - Strachan Bay S.E. 403-528-4110 John Ralph [email protected] www.mobil1autoservice.com Drive In - Drive Out - Drive Happy can use to their advantage. Social media is another way to engage customers; just be sure to use your social media platform for more than just promotion. While promoting products is a great way to use social media, such platforms also are an ideal way to share interesting information about your products and even you and your employees. Social media platforms now vary greatly, and each can be employed in different ways. For example, Instagram is a great way to share photos of new products or in-store events, while Facebook can be a great tool to share the story of your business and how it came to be. * Reward loyal customers. Customers love to know their loyalty is being rewarded, and incentivizing that loyalty is a great way for startups to establish a customer base. LoyalBlocks, for example, is a loyalty-marketing tool for traditional brickand-mortar businesses that allows them to connect with their customers, who can earn special offers or rewards toward products each time they check in on their smartphones when making purchases in the store. The cost of enrollment in such a program or the cost of incentivizing purchases will likely prove negligible the larger and more loyal your customer base becomes. * Don't shy away from recognition. Recognition of your efforts is a great way to build a strong reputation, so don't be afraid to participate when communities are doling out awards to local businesses. You may or may not need to apply for such awards, but don't feel sheepish if you must apply. Awards make for great (and often free) publicity, and awards are earned on merit, so they're nothing to be embarrassed about. Building a startup can be as challenging as it can be rewarding. Marketing plays a significant role in many successful startups, and there are many steps startup owners can take to market their business effectively. 5 - Strachan Bay S.E. 403-528-4110 John Ralph [email protected] www.mobil1autoservice.com Drive In - Drive Out - Drive Happy 403-526-5053 200 $ www.computer-central.ca Computer Services 1) Computer Sales & Repair 2) On-Site Service for Commercial & Residential 3) Server Setup & Maintenance 4) Point of Sale Hardware 5) Virus & Malware Removal 6) Tune-ups Bay 2 - 928 Allowance Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat © 2014 Hunter Douglas. With weather delays, heavier crowds and increased airline fares, it's important to be organized. To help ease the stress of planning for your annual vacation, here are three essential tips to ensure a worry free trip: 1. Be strategic about booking – The cost of flights can add up quickly. Knowing when to purchase your ticket and when to depart are key ways to reduce your ticket price. 2. Make sure you're covered for mishaps – 80 per cent of Canadians cite lost or delayed luggage as one of the most frustrating things to happen while on vacation and 78 per cent have been frustrated by cancelled or delayed flights. 3. Make airport security a breeze – Arrive with plenty of time to spare and don't over pack - stick to the essentials only. Have your travel documents in an easy-to-reach place and separate all liquid and gels into a separate baggie. Lorraine Lozo - President Robertson Memorial Branch No. 17 Royal Canadian Legion First Place / Première Place Two Minutes By: Hareem Masroor, Nanaimo, BC, Dover Bay Secondary School, Seaview Centennial Br. #25 Two minutes of silence is all we have to remember the fallen. I look up and see the veterans. The medals on their uniforms gleam in the sunlight. The call for the two minute silence was made. As their heads hung, their faces reveal sorrow from the memories of the war, however there’s also a glimpse of strength, pride and relief. I turn my head to the left and see a row of brightly coloured poppies pinned onto the shirts of those I see. For most of us kids it was unnatural to be in such a quiet setting, but once I closed my eyes I began to dwell into the mindset of why we remember. It was here when I realize that there was more to this silence than simply trying to remember soldiers, nurses and others who participated meet horrific ends. These two minutes allow us to think deeply.War was able to destroy lives of so many families and innocent people, but it wasn’t able to destroy the hope that clinged within them, the action to carry on nor the ability to ever say our county “will never win.”It is this significance that marks an important feeling in our hearts. The reason we have silence is to mark the end of war.We remember more than lost lives within two minutes. We reflect on what the soldiers were fighting for, how they chose to enter darkness in order to give us light. Their harsh conditions brought us all comfort and freedom, their struggles on the battlefield is what gave us a strong country, their lives were given to let our children move on and start life at a better place. It seemed as if the whole place fell still, frozen in time. This moment is when we all put aside our boundaries such as gender, religion and class to unite in remembrance. The silence breaks with a strong sound coming from a trumpet as it plays the song “The Fallen.” Afterwards the ceremony concludes with speeches and then a last march accompanied by bagpipes. I noticed tears spring from a veteran’s eyes. It filled me with just as much sadness. I couldn’t imagine the pain and sorrow it must have been to watch comrades die in front of your eyes or to know that you couldn’t see the faces of your loved ones ever again. After all I was just a kid and the idea of war was so distant. It really is admirable when you think about it, these people were just neighbours and good citizens, yet they had the courage to fight in war and leave their homes to protect the future of their country and generations. To me that deserves a huge recognition and award. I walked over to the veteran and plainly replied, “thank you for your service and God bless you all for what you did.”I know that words can’t truly express the debt that we owe them but it still felt right to show this person how grateful I was for his and all the fellows veterans services. Remembrance day, it comes only once a year, but on this one day the heart of the ceremony comes from the silence. It gives us some understanding about war and the effects of sacrifice, a lesson seldomly seen and also a lesson that can never be truly grasped from books. We recognize the efforts of mere strangers who placed themselves either at land or sea to make sure that we’re given the opportunities that we have today. This gives us an infinite way of honouring, respecting and giving our thanks to these soldiers. I stand taller, walk prouder and feel confident that I am a Canadian. What’s great is that I’ve learned most of this through silence, a two minute silence. 20”Wreath #20 . . .$70.00 14“Wreath #14 . . .$45.00 Green Cross #35 . .$40.00 8”Wreath . . . . . . . .$25.00 If you would like to purchase a wreath for your business or the Cenotaph, please call the Poppy Office at 403-528-3302 PARTING OUT - A large selection of vehicles. Although kids might want to wear shoes that match the costume, shoes that fit well and are comfortable are a safer bet. This will help prevent tripping and falling over cumbersome shoes. It also reduces the risk of developing blisters and discomfort when walking from home to home. • Go trick-or-treating in groups. Children should not be allowed to go out in search of candy alone. Going in a group means that someone can get help if need be. • Be visible. When trick-ortreating at night, take steps to improve visibility. This includes using reflective tape on costumes and carrying a flashlight or glow sticks so that other pedestrians as well as drivers will be able to see children. • Stick to the sidewalks. Children should stay on sidewalks and cross the street only at established crosswalks. • Do not enter homes. Unless a child is with an adult and the home is owned by a trusted friend, kids should not enter homes for treats. • Avoid candles and jacko-lanterns. A costume can easily catch on fire, so it is best to steer clear of candles, luminaries and lit pumpkins. • Accessorize safely. Select flexible swords and knives if they are accompanying a costume. Avoid rigid items that can cause injuries. Community Minded Locally Invested Lifetime Membership Benefits 403-528-6600 Be Safe! • Avoid distractions. Trickor-treaters should not be wearing earbuds or talking on a phone while trick-or-treating. They should be paying attention to their surroundings and using caution. • Consume only factorywrapped treats. Well-meaning people may hand out cupcakes or marshmallow cereal treats. The ingredients used and the safety of these treats cannot be confirmed, so it is best to stick with store-bought items instead. • Adults should drive carefully. All drivers should slow down and anticipate children darting out into the roadways on Halloween. Drive slowly and pay attention to the roads. The traditional “nine to five, five days a week” job with a single employer at a specific workplace is now only one of an increasing number of ways to work. This is good news if you’re among the growing number of workers looking for more flexibility to deal with changing family and personal needs, or seeking better work-life balance. Alternative ways of D&D OILFIELD RENTALS NOW HIRING (Journeyman) Welder D&D Oilfield Rentals provides the safe, convenient, and reliable accommodations, equipment, and tool rentals in Western Canada. This growing range of work alternatives opens up a number of options about your work and how you do it. For example, instead of working full-time for one employer, you may be happier working part-time and starting your own consulting business on the side. Check out these work alternatives: Full-time and parttime work: working fulltime for more than 30 hours a week, or part-time for fewer than 30 hours a week, for a single employer. Advantages include security, a predictable income, benefits (fewer benefits for part-time workers) and a feeling of belonging. These TRICAN WELL SERVICE is one of Canada’s fastest growing pressure pumping companies, with operations in Canada, the US, Russia, Kazakhstan and North Africa. Recognized for technical leadership and innovation, Trican provides specialized, engineered and integrated solutions to customers involved in the exploration and development of oil and natural gas reserves,Trican’s services include fracturing, coiled tubing, cementing, acidizing, nitrogen, microseismic and industrial services. At Trican, we are proud to have received numerous accolades as a top employer, as we believe success begins with our people. We hire and reward those who are motivated, results and service-oriented, team players, career-driven, honest, ethical and adaptable. If that sounds like you, we invite you to apply for the following positions: are often offset by limited control and flexibility. Multi-tracking: working in two or more work roles at the same time, e.g. working part-time for two employers or holding down a job and running your own online sales business as well. Multi-tracking allows you to pursue a variety of interests, gives you the security that comes from having more than one source of income and increases your flexibility. Some drawbacks are the increased pressure on leisure time and the need for strong time-management skills. Job sharing: sharing with one or more people the responsibilities of one job for a single employer. Job sharing has the same advantages and disadvantages as full- and part-time work, with the added challenges of ongoing communication with your job partner and the added benefit of your partner’s support. Contracting: working for a specific employer for a set length of time. This option provides variety, a feeling of independence and flexibility. Drawbacks include unpredictable income due to long gaps between contracts, lack of benefits and limited security. Self-employment: marketing and delivering services or products in a one-person operation. Many home-based businesses are examples of selfemployment. This option offers flexibility around the type of work you do, and where and when you do it. Challenges include the need to constantly find clients for your products or services, long hours, a financial investment, unreliable income, administrative chores, such as tax preparation and bookkeeping, and no benefits. Talent pooling: offering services or products as part of a group of selfemployed people with common interests and different talents. Talent pool members direct opportunities to each other and provide services for one another’s clients. For example, a wedding planner may be part of a talent pool with a caterer, a photographer and a floral artist. Talent pooling allows you to specialize, reduces work search time and creates opportunities. This is balanced by the need for good team- work skills and the disadvantages of self-employment. Consulting: working to complete specific tasks within specific time frames on numerous projects for a number of clients. This option offers variety, flexibility and independence. Offsetting this are constant pressures to find the next project, long hours, increased administrative tasks and an unpredictable income. Entrepreneurship: working as a self-employed person but also hiring others, e.g. owning a franchise business. It has the same advantages and disadvantages as self-employment. Entrepreneurship involves greater financial risk, including the responsibility for other people's livelihoods, but it also offers more income potential. As change continues to shape the work world, you may be able to tap into its potential by focusing on the work you want to do, rather than the job you want to get. Expanding the way you think about work can increase your chances for creating balance and finding success in all aspects of your work and life. ~alis.alberta.ca MEDICINE HAT BASE REQUIRES: - FRAC OPERATORS - ACID PUMP OPERATORS - COIL TUBING OPERATORS - JOURNEYMAN MECHANICS Class 1 and 3 License Required *Will also consider Class 5 drivers* Primary responsibilities & duties: • Ensure adherence to Workplace Safety, National Safety Code, Trican Well Service Ltd, government as well as client policies and regulations • Drive various large duty trucks over diverse outdoor terrain and conditions while under mentor supervision • Learn to perform pre-job calculations with blending and mixing • Attend all operations, field pre rig-up and job safety meetings • Learn to effectively inspect and properly configure all equipment • Participate in site rig-up treating iron, manifolds and recording equipment while under qualified supervision • Assist in rig-out of all equipment for travel and conduct movement to following site under supervision • Complete and submit all position required paperwork • Assist in all required equipment maintenance • Successful completion WHAT MAKES US ATTRACTIVE: Excellent base salary with one of the best benefit programs in the industry.
