SUMMER STRINGS EXTRAVAGANZA!
This past summer marked the second annual
“Things With Strings” summer orchestra camp!
Thirty-three students in grades 4-8 participated
in this four-day camp, which included large
rehearsals, small group lessons, relay races,
scavenger hunts, and other musical games. The
camp was led by Mrs. Shillitoe, Mrs. Ogilvie,
and Mrs. Pierce, and they greatly appreciated the
help from the many Chittenango High School
string players and some Chittenango alumni!
On the final day of string camp, the students
performed a concert for their family and friends. As friends and family walked on the sidewalk
into the concert, they were able to see the creative and colorful artwork that the campers made
with sidewalk chalk. Beautiful music was made, and fun was had by all. “Things With Strings”
looks forward to seeing everybody back next summer!

SCHOOL CLOSINGS
Whenever road or weather conditions in the Chittenango Central School District require closing school for all or part of the regularly
scheduled school day, major commerical radio stations in the Syracuse broadcast area will be notified as soon as possible, as well as TV
Channels 3, 5, 9, and 10. Occasionally it is necessary to close school early due to rapidly deteriorating weather conditions or an adverse
condition within a particular school. When this situation occurs, the district will notify local radio stations and students will arrive home
early. This information will also appear on the school district website (www.chittenangoschools.org). Parents should make arrangements
for the supervision of their children on “snow days,” or in the event of early dismissal. We recommend that such arrangements be made
as soon as possible to guard against the occasional early season storm.
When Chittenango schools are closed, all scheduled activities, events, and programs in the schools for that day are cancelled. The school
closing information applies to all students receiving transportation on Chittenango Central School District buses, including parochial and
private school students, BOCES students, and all others.

PARENTS’ RIGHT TO KNOW
Under Federal “No Child Left Behind” legislation, it is the
right of the parent of any student attending Bridgeport,
Bolivar, Lake Street Elementary, Chittenango Middle, or
Chittenango High School to request information regarding
their child’s classroom teacher(s) and paraprofessional staff
assigned to teach their children. Minimum information
parents may request includes:
• Whether the teacher has met State qualification and
licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas
in which the teacher provides instruction;
• Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other
provisional status through which State qualification or
licensing criteria have been waived;
• The baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and
any other graduate certification or degree held by the
teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification
or degree; and
• Whether the child is provided direct services by other
CCS professionals and, if so, their qualifications.
The Chittenango Central School District is pleased to inform
parents of students in the aforementioned buildings that
all classroom teachers have the requisite New York State
certifications for their employment. Other CCS professional
staff do not provide direct services to students. Questions
regarding a teacher’s specific baccalaureate or advanced
degrees should be sent in writing to:

BOLIVAR ROAD ELEMENTARY
BUILDING PLANNING TEAM
The 2013-2014 school year ended with the successful
achievement of a school-wide event called “Career/
Community Service Day.” The event began with an
assembly featuring an overview of various career fields
and community service opportunities, a school-wide
sing along, and guest speaker Larry Martin. The Building Planning Team arranged for parents and community
members, representing different career and community
service areas, to share their background knowledge
with students during the remainder of the morning. A
school-wide afternoon interactive assembly consisting of
a Community Service Birdhouse Project finished up the
fun-filled day.
This year, the team will focus on the following goals:
organizing and providing enrichment programs for
students through after-school clubs, recognizing
volunteerism, and working with the PTA to organize a
fourth grade Sendoff Celebration and Moving-Up Event.
If you are interested in sponsoring or helping with a club
this year, please call the school at 687-2880.
The 2014-2015 Bolivar Road Building Planning Team
members are Jeanne Pizzuto-Sauve, Laurie Randall,
Shannon Taylor, Kristin Tedford - parents; Sandy
Athans, Kara Brooker, Dale Devendorf, Brad Williams
- teachers; Mary Lou Champlin - community member;
Kris Burleigh - support staff; and Arnie Merola - administrator. Please feel free to contact members of the BPT
if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.

CHITTENANGO CENTRAL SCHOOL WELCOMES NEW TEACHERS
Hello, my name is Claire Angier, and
I am excited to be joining the faculty at
Bolivar Road Elementary School as a
Special Education Teacher. I earned my
undergraduate degree in English at the
University at Buffalo, and my Masters of
Science in Teaching in Special Education
and Elementary Education at LeMoyne
College. Prior to teaching in Chittenango, I was teaching in
Portland, Oregon. While in Portland, I taught for six years in
a kindergarten through sixth grade building as a special education teacher. I am originally from the Syracuse area, and am
excited to be back in Upstate New York. I moved back to the
area with my husband and two young daughters one year ago.
I am looking forward to becoming involved in the Chittenango
School District and Chittenango community, and I am excited
for a happy and productive school year. I am grateful for the
opportunity to join the Chittenango School District faculty, and
I look forward to the upcoming school year.
Hello, my name is Melissa Bisbo, and
I am very excited to be joining the sixth
grade team at Chittenango Middle
School. I received my undergraduate degree in psychology from SUNY
Geneseo, and my Masters in Education
from Lesley University in Cambridge,
MA. After completing graduate school,
I moved to Austin, Texas, where I taught fourth and fifth
grades. I grew up in Central New York and am excited to be
back in the area where I still have family and many friends.
When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy spending time outdoors playing tennis, running, skiing, and camping! I am
really looking forward to the upcoming school year and am
grateful for the opportunity to join the Chittenango School District.
Greetings! My name is Toby Clark, and I
am so thankful and honored to have joined
the Chittenango Central School District
and Bridgeport Elementary School. I have
a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and have spent the last four years
teaching kindergarten and second grade in
Homer, NY. I also have several years of
experience as a teaching assistant in first grade.
I have had the pleasure of living in several different states including Pennsylvania, Kansas, Illinois, and Tennessee. Because of
this, I have been able to see a lot of our country! When I am
not teaching, I enjoy traveling and spending time outside in the
garden or in my hammock. I was recently introduced to kayaking and love it!
I look forward to many years teaching in Chittenango and the
www.chittenangoschools.org
opportunity to provide an excellent, high-quality education to
each student who passes through my door!
Hello, my name is Jennifer Gerardi,
and I am from Endicott, New York.
I attended SUNY Geneseo where I
earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in
English and certification in teaching
English Language Arts to adolescents.
I continued my education at SUNY
Oswego, earning my Master’s degree in
Literacy Education. Before coming to Chittenango, I taught
eighth grade English at Liverpool as a long-term substitute. I
also taught English abroad in Salzburg, Austria, for a school
year, and have experience substitute teaching in several school
districts around Syracuse and Oswego. In my free time, I like
reading, traveling, and living green.
My name is Elise Gray, and I am very
excited to be joining the faculty as a
fifth grade teacher at Bolivar Road
Elementary School.
I earned a
Bachelor of Science in Marketing
Management from Syracuse University, and a Master of Science for Teachers in Inclusive Childhood Education
from Le Moyne College. I am dually certified to teach Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities. Last year,
I fostered a positive and motivational learning environment
while teaching third grade in the North Syracuse Central School
District. I’m excited to provide my new fifth grade students with
a rich and meaningful education this school year. I am extremely
grateful for the opportunity to become a part of the Chittenango
Central School District and community, and I look forward to the
upcoming school year!
My name is Abigail Lannon, and I am
working as a sixth grade special education teacher at the Middle School and
a fifth grade special education teacher
at Bolivar. I grew up in the city of
Syracuse where I attended Corcoran
High School. I graduated from LeMoyne College with both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Shortly after graduation, I moved
to Buffalo where I taught kindergarten and first grade special
education for three years. I moved back to Syracuse to be
with my husband in 2011, and took a job as a special education teacher in Solvay. I have worked there for the past three
and a half years in grades K-5. When I am not in school,
you can find me playing with my 11 month old daughter,
Adelaide, playing soccer, biking, swimming, taking pictures, or

My name is Meghan Samsel, and I am
a new sixth grade ELA/math teacher at
the middle school. I attended Syracuse
University where I received my undergraduate degree in Inclusive Elementary, Special Education, and Sociology.
I also obtained my Master’s Degree in
Literacy Education through Canisius
College. I have been working as a sixth grade special education teacher for the Greene Central School District for the past
two years. Preceding my position at Greene, I taught at the
Montessori School of Syracuse, as well as the Canastota
Central School District. Growing up in Canastota and
having student taught at Chittenango, my family and I were very
excited to move back home and become a part of such an exceptional school district and community. When I am not teaching, I
enjoy spending time with my husband, Heath, and my daughter,
Summer. I am so thrilled to be a part of the Chittenango community and look forward to the year ahead!

CAMP FEU 2014
The science department wrapped up the sixth annual Camp FEU
with a fun showcase and ice cream party. Seventeen students
participated in this year’s event, officially the largest turnout
ever. Students from the middle and high school Science Olympiad teams worked on events in preparation for the upcoming
2015 season. Noah Suave’s computer game creation was a big
hit, while the team of Diego Prado, Isaiah Prado, and Patrick
Clobridge tried to hit things with a newly minted air trajectory
cannon. Thanks to our amazing alumni, Alison Houseman,
Kevin Beagle, David Beagle, and Daniel Hanggi for volunteering their time and talent inspiring the next generation of
olympians. Anyone interested in joining the Middle School program should contact Beth Bennett, while new participants
at the High School are welcome to contact Harold Muller or Beth Carpenter.
A.I.S. SERVICES
A.I.S., or Academic Intervention Services, are an important part of the Chittenango Central Schools Program. The overall
objective of the services is to provide support for students who are experiencing problems keeping up with the academic
pace required in schools. The Federal Government under NCLB (No Child Left Behind) Legislation provides funding to
assist districts with these programs. The funding levels are based on the overall wealth of the community and the number
of students qualifying for the free and reduced lunch program. The legislation also has requirements that districts must
meet including, but not limited to, levels of student performance on mandated testing, qualifications of teachers in core
subject areas, parent’s right to know (see accompanying notice), and opportunities for parents to provide input on programs
the district might use in their A.I.S. services. We also provide notices to parents of children receiving these services which
include why their child will have these services available, periodic reports of their child’s progress, and benchmarks their
child has achieved which disqualify them from receiving these additional supports.
Currently, all aspects of A.I.S. are provided by highly qualified professionals whose salaries, in part, are supported by
federal funding. The funding only provides a portion of those salaries, the majority of which are supported using NYS aid
and local tax dollars.

FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects
the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of
the U.S. Department of Education.
FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records. These rights transfer to the student
when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have
transferred are “eligible students.”
• Parents or eligible students have the right to inspect and review the student’s education records maintained by the school.
Schools are not required to provide copies of records unless, for reasons such as great distance, it is impossible for parents
or eligible students to review the records. Schools may charge a fee for copies.
• Parents or eligible students have the right to request that a school correct records which they believe to be inaccurate or
misleading. If the school decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student then has the right to a formal
hearing. After the hearing, if the school still decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student has the right
to place a statement with the record setting forth his or her view about the contested information.
• Generally, schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to release any information
from a student’s education record. However, FERPA allows schools to disclose those records, without consent, to the
following parties or under the following conditions (34 CFR § 99.31):
- School officials with legitimate educational interest;
- Other schools to which a student is transferring;
- Specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes;
- Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student;
- Organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school;
- Accrediting organizations;
- To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena;
- Appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies; and
- State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific State law.
Schools may disclose, without consent, “directory” information such as a student’s name, address, telephone number, date
and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However, schools must tell parents and eligible students
about directory information and allow parents and eligible students a reasonable amount of time to request that the school not
disclose directory information about them. Schools must notify parents and eligible students annually of their rights under
FERPA. The actual means of notification (special letter, inclusion in a PTA bulletin, student handbook, or newspaper article)
is left to the discretion of each school.

CMS MEDIEVAL DAY 2014
It was a beautiful day in June when the sixth graders at CMS got to step back in time and recreate life
in the Middle Ages. Whether showing off their
feudal attire in a morning fashion show, learning
about the sport of falconry, or challenging someone
in a jousting competition, students were engaged
and learning on a day they’ll always remember.
Pictured are Riley Burns at jousting and the serfs in costume who were
awarded with ice cream at lunch for their excellent costumes.

BOYS XC TEAM CAMP
This summer the boy’s cross country team traveled to
Raquette Lake N.Y to participate in their 17th annual
five-day running camp. During this camp, athletes were
challenged with double sessions daily. When athletes
weren’t running they were able to swim, boat, play
volleyball, and most importantly, sleep. On the last
full day, teammates traveled to the nearby great camp
Sagamore for a complete tour. The camp was built by
William Wes Durant and owned by the Vanderbilt family.
Each day the team was treated to outstanding food cooked by the friendly staff on site. Meals were served family style
adding to the team building theme of the camp. The team can’t wait to attend XC camp again next summer.
