Principal’s Message
I am very much looking forward to catching up with students, staff and parents
next week. The last six weeks have been very refreshing and I return to school
with renewed energy, looking forward to the very busy final six weeks of the 2014
school year. I have been very impressed with the activities and achievements
over the four weeks of my absence and would like to acknowledge the wonderful
leadership of Mrs Barrett-Coade and Mr Costin over this time. Their caring and
professional guidance has ensured that the school continued to progress towards
achieving our 2014 goals. Thanks Kim and Brendan!
I would also like to acknowledge the amazing efforts of our extended community towards the
organisation and support of our Fun Day last weekend. Particular mention must go to our Fun
Day convenor Mrs Monica Christie. We are all very grateful for your tireless work Monica.
Thanks also to the many parents and staff who assisted in so many ways. Such events require
the support of the entire community. As always a review of this event will be conducted in the
coming weeks.
At the time of writing this newsletter I am attending the Australian Primary Principal’s Association National Conference. It has been affirming, challenging and inspiring to explore national
and international initiatives and consider how to adapt some of our current practices to improve
the educational experiences of the students of St Pius.
2015 Staffing
In response to the system-wide uncertainty surrounding the effects of Yr 7 moving to secondary
in 2015, in recent years Brisbane Catholic Education put a hold on appointing teachers to continuing positions (apart from some graduate appointments). This means that most of the teachers on our staff appointed in recent years have been appointed to one year contracts. Now that
the full effect of year seven moving to secondary is clear we are able to adjust our staffing accordingly. Where vacancies exist these must be advertised and appointments made through a
merit based process. Our 2015 staffing profile will not be known until this process is complete.
This should be known within the next two to three weeks. Until then we are not able to decide
on our class teaching teams for next year.
Due to our prep orientation program commencing next week our prep teaching team has been
finalised. I am pleased to announce that Mrs Helen Myers will join Mrs Hayes and Ms Helena
as our third prep teacher next year. Helen has many years of teaching experience and has
filled the role of our Early Years’ Coordinator for a number of years. Thanks for taking on this
new challenge Helen.

APRE’s Message
Family Fun Day
Saturday’s Family Fun Day was an amazing success. The idea behind the day is not to
raise money but to bring the St Pius families together for a day of enjoyment, fun and community spirit. It was great to see so many families celebrating the Fun Day. Throughout the
day we welcomed many of our new prep families for 2015 and our members of parliament
Mr Jason Woodforth and Mr Wayne Swan. (Jason won two of our prizes after buying 100
raffle tickets; so congratulations to him). An enormous thank you must go to Mrs Monica
Christie, the P&F and the parents who volunteered their time before, during and after the event. We
acknowledge XOXO Beauty Bar as our major sponsor for the day and all who donated prizes for our
monster raffle. Special thanks to Dave Brown and his workers for setting up the event and clearing the
oval when the Fun Day ended. We have a tremendous group of parents who, without reservation, offer
their time and effort to assist the school in many of our ventures. God bless you.
CTJ – Moderation
On Monday the teaching staff participated in the annual Consistency of
Teacher Judgement day (CTJ) at All Saints, Albany Creek. This day gave
the teachers the opportunity to dialogue with peers from other schools to
discuss student learning and achievement. These days are integral in increasing professional capacity and ultimately improving teaching skills and
student learning. The teachers moderated in the areas of Religious Education-Scripture and in English–writing. They also participated in a ‘Numeracy’
workshop.

Religious Education Validation (REV)
The validation of school Religious Education Programs is a key component of the implementation of the
Religious Education Curriculum, Archdiocese of Brisbane. Schools have three years in which to have
their program submitted for validation. St Pius is one of the first schools to nominate for validation. Our
validation day is next Wednesday 29th October. The REV process is designed to ensure that every Archdiocesan School has a documented program for the delivery of a high quality Religious Education Curriculum for all students in their care. We here at St Pius have a comprehensive, sequential, evolving Religious Education program that is informative to both students in their learning and to parents through a
RE website (coming soon).
We will be assessed by a panel of peers (two other schools going through the process) and an Education Officer in Religious Education from BCE.
The St Pius Religious Education Program must:





demonstrate how the school establishes high expectations for each student to maximise learning
and achievement in the Religion Curriculum P-12;
document how we promote excellence and equity in the Religion classroom through teaching that
is visible, explicit and responsive in moving each student’s learning forward.
demonstrate that Religious Education teachers are appropriately qualified, accredited and working
in authentic relationships for quality teaching and learning
reflect on how we evaluate and use evidence of the impact teaching has on learning progress and
achievement for all Religious Education students
demonstrate how the Religious Life of the School P-6 is aligned to the Religion Curriculum
As you can tell Religious Education is a valid, in-depth subject similar in to the Australian Curriculum in
structure and implementation. It is planned at whole school and year level, taught, assessed and reported on.

and help our children to ‘Recognise, React and Report’ if they feel something
is not right’

Family Fun Day - Many Thanks
Thank you everyone for supporting the Family Fun Day. The kids had a ball, friendships were formed and families in the St Pius community connected which is the main objective of the day.
There are a lot of people to thank for putting the day together. Thank you to all the coordinators. Chris Fabila,
Rachel Terecans , Moira McDonald, Lenore Cooper, Melanie Perry, Ronnie Taylor, Emma Whalan, Rohan von
Hoyer-Davies and Simone Birtles. Many of you took this on blindly but managed to provide fun activities, amazing rides, fabulous food, scrumptious sweets, flying fairy floss, fantastic prizes, and thirst quenching
drinks. Thank you also to your teams of helpers who donated their time along the way. I have only heard wonderful feedback about the day from the kids and families and you should all be very proud of your efforts. I hope
you all had fun along the way.
Dave Brown would also like to thank the many helpers who came along to assist with some of the manual work
that was required in the set up and the pack up . Thanks to the drivers who collected and returned tables, chairs,
and cold room.
Thank you to the P&F Executive for their assistance along the way and their official duties carried out on the
day.
Thank you to Kim Barrett-Coade, teachers and school officers who assisted in the planning and volunteered on
the day. Huge thank you to Carolyn Harman and Inga McMahon for the administrative assistance and Workplace Health & Safety knowledge and expertise.

Spotlight on Leadership
Craft Club
Craft club is a small club that meets every Wednesday during first and second break in the IT lab.
Students in Years 4-7 are welcome and the experience is enjoyed by all who attend. The club is run
by Mrs Einam, Mrs Morgan and Mrs Spargo. In craft club we make all sorts of things such as paper
folding flowers, bunny rabbits that we have knitted and cushions that we have weaved out of recycled t-shirts. We look forward to seeing you there!!

BANYO COMMUNITY SWIM CLUB
St Pius School Pool Redhill Road entrance
Come along and see how much fun it is. We are a friendly, relaxed swim club the whole
family can enjoy.
You don’t need to be a super fast swimmer. Points are based on improving your own
times.
We offer half length races and the not so confident competitors have a competent swimmer in the lane with them at all times. All ages and standards are welcome.
Cost is $35 per swimmer or $70 per family for the season.
