The Mission of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is
to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to the
world at large while equipping His servants through
Word and Sacrament.
Celebrating 120 Years of Ministry
THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
Saturday, October 25, 2014 & Sunday, October 26, 2014
Welcome!
We are happy to have you with us today. If you are a guest, please introduce yourself and ask
an usher for a Welcome Packet. We welcome children and encourage you to worship together
as a family often. Families with small children might want to consider sitting in the front pews
to better enable their children to see and participate in the worship service. "Busy Bags" that
contain quiet activities for restless children are located at the rear of the church and you are
welcome to borrow one if needed. Please ask an usher to direct you. If your child needs a
diaper change, to be fed or comforted during worship, please ask an usher to direct you to the
infant area just beyond the narthex.
A Word from Pastor
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus is asked about God’s law, and answers in two parts. First He is
asked the question of which commandment of the Law is the greatest. The first Commandment
Jesus mentions is Deuteronomy 6:5, quoted not precisely, but with the same meaning. We are to
love God. Then Jesus gives them the second most important commandment. It is to love our
neighbors as we love ourselves. The second half of our Gospel lesson has Jesus asks the
question. "What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?" They said to Him, "The son of
David." Then Jesus gives them the real puzzle, He said to them, "Then how does David in the
Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying, 'The Lord said to my Lord, ‘sit at my right hand, until I put your
enemies beneath your feet?’ If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?" The problem of
those speaking to Jesus was unbelief. They wanted God their way, and they wanted the Bible to
mean what they wanted it to mean, and not what it said. But this lesson isn’t about what they
wanted, or what we want. It’s about what God wants. What God wants is to save His people.
God wants us to love Him, and empowered through the Holy Spirit, understanding Jesus
sacrifice on the cross, we do. Strengthened by His Word and Sacraments we love Him, and
through Him we love one another.
Services on Saturday and Sunday will follow Divine Service Setting Four beginning on p. 203 in
the Lutheran Service Book, with Confession and Absolution.
Opening Hymn (Sunday) "All Who Believe and Are Baptized” LSB 601
All who believe and are baptized
Shall see the Lord’s salvation;
Baptized into the death of Christ,
They are a new creation.
Through Christ’s redemption they shall stand
Among the glorious, heav’nly band
Of ev’ry tribe and nation.
With one accord, O God, we pray:
Grant us Your Holy Spirit.
Help us in our infirmity
Through Jesus’ blood and merit.
Grant us to grow in grace each day
That by this sacrament we may
Eternal life inherit.

Baptism
Today we welcome Veronica Louise Gnagey to God’s family of believers through
Holy Baptism. Veronica is the daughter of Steven and Cristin (Williams) Gnagey.
Her sponsors are Anna Dawson, Philip Rousseau and Joe Williams.
Confession and Absolution (p.203)
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
2
C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.
P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and
receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar,
let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another
that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves
from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite
mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and
saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.
C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to
everlasting life. Amen.
P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake
forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His
authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the
T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C
Amen.
Service of the Word (beginning on p.204)
Introit (spoken responsively)
Ps. 9:1–2, 9–10; antiphon: Ps. 9:18
For the needy shall not always be forgotten,
and the hope of the poor shall not perish forever.
I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.
All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
3
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
For the needy shall not always be forgotten,
and the hope of the poor shall not perish forever.
Kyrie (p.204)
C Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Gloria in Excelsis
LSB 204
C To God on high be glory
And peace to all the earth;
Goodwill from God in heaven
Proclaimed at Jesus' birth!
We praise and bless You, Father;
Your holy name we sing—
Our thanks for Your great glory,
Lord God, our heav'nly King.
To You, O sole-begotten,
The Father's Son, we pray;
O Lamb of God, our Savior,
You take our sins away.
Have mercy on us, Jesus;
Receive our heartfelt cry,
Where You in pow'r are seated
At God's right hand on high—
For You alone are holy,
You only are the Lord.
Forever and forever,
Be worshiped and adored;
You with the Holy Spirit
Alone are Lord Most High,
In God the Father's glory.
"Amen!" our glad reply.

Collect of the Day
Pastor: Let us pray.
O God, You have commanded us to love You above all things and our neighbors as
ourselves. Grant us the Spirit to think and do what is pleasing in Your sight, that
our faith in You may never waver and our love for one another may not falter;
through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.
Old Testament Reading
Leviticus 19:1–2, 15–18
1
And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to all the congregation of the
people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am
holy.
15
“You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer
to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. 16You shall not go
around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the
life of your neighbor: I am the LORD.
17
“You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly
with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. 18You shall not take
vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall
love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Gradual (spoken responsively)
Ps. 91:11; 103:1
He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

Epistle Reading
1 Thessalonians 2:1–13
1
For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain.
2
But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as
you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the
midst of much conflict. 3For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or
any attempt to deceive, 4but just as we have been approved by God to be
entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God
who tests our hearts. 5For we never came with words of flattery, as you know,
nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. 6Nor did we seek glory from people,
whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as
apostles of Christ. 7But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking
care of her own children. 8So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were
ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves,
because you had become very dear to us.
9
For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that
we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel
of God. 10You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless
was our conduct toward you believers. 11For you know how, like a father with his
children, 12we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to
walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
13
And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word
of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as
what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Alleluia and Verse (p.205)
C Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
C These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son
of God.
6
C Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Holy Gospel
Matthew 22:34–46
Leader: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the twenty-second chapter.
People: Glory to You, O Lord.
34
When the Pharisees heard that [Jesus] had silenced the Sadducees, they
gathered together.
35
And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36“Teacher, which
is the great commandment in the Law?” 37And he said to him, “You shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
38
This is the great and first commandment. 39And a second is like it: You shall love
your neighbor as yourself. 40On these two commandments depend all the Law
and the Prophets.”
41
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a
question, 42saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They
said to him, “The son of David.” 43He said to them, “How is it then that David, in
the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,
44
“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet’?
45
If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” 46And no one was able to
answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more
questions.
Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.
Apostles’ Creed (p.207)
C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
7
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life T everlasting. Amen.
Children's Message
Sermon Hymn
“The Law of God Is Good and Wise” LSB 579
1
The Law of God is good and wise
And sets His will before our eyes,
Shows us the way of righteousness,
And dooms to death when we transgress.
2
Its light of holiness imparts
The knowledge of our sinful hearts
That we may see our lost estate
And turn from sin before too late.
3
To those who help in Christ have found
And would in works of love abound
It shows what deeds are His delight
And should be done as good and right.
4
But those who scornfully disdain
God’s Law shall then in sin remain;
Its terror in their ear resounds
And keeps their wickedness in bounds.
8
5
The Law is good; but since the fall
Its holiness condemns us all;
It dooms us for our sin to die
And has no pow’r to justify.
6
To Jesus we for refuge flee,
Who from the curse has set us free,
And humbly worship at His throne,
Saved by His grace through faith alone.
Sermon
“What God Wants”
Prayer of the Church
Offering
John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Despite the false charges
brought against him, Luther said that he was “the apostle of good works.” For only in being
set free by the Gospel can we do good works. Jesus has set us free: His blood washes away
our sins and now we stand before God as His beloved children, invited to live our lives to
His glory for the good of His kingdom.
* Sunday's Service will conclude with:
The Prayers
The Lord's Prayer
C Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.
Amen.
9
The Benediction
A Let us bless the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
P The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace.
C Amen.
The Closing Hymn “Lord, Help Us Ever to Retain” LSB 865
1
Lord, help us ever to retain
The Catechism’s doctrine plain
As Luther taught the Word of truth
In simple style to tender youth.
2
Help us Your holy Law to learn,
To mourn our sin and from it turn
In faith to You and to Your Son
And Holy Spirit, Three in One.
3
Hear us, dear Father, when we pray
For needed help from day to day
That as Your children we may live,
Whom You baptized and so received.
4
Lord, when we fall or go astray,
Absolve and lift us up, we pray;
And through the Sacrament increase
Our faith till we depart in peace.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
Today is coin box day. Our lesson is taken from Genesis 15:1-6; 17:1-27 God's Covenant with
Abram. This shows us God gave Abram (Abraham) faith to trust His promises to save His
people. God gives us faith in Jesus, our Savior, that in sin we doubt and do not trust God. But
God in His mercy carries out His promises, giving us reason to trust God in all things and the
faith in and through Jesus to do so.

Thanks to everyone who has been collecting pull tabs from pop and beer cans. Now we have a

the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus, Ohio, are having a competition to see who can
collect the most pull tabs by the time of the Michigan-Ohio State game. We can't have Ohio
beat Michigan, so here's a special request to save those pull tabs and bring them to the
container in the hallway. Pull tabs from pop, beer, V-8, soup, fruit, or anything else counts!
The container will be emptied weekly, and we'll keep you informed of how many we have
collected. The families who are able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House thank you!

NEWS FROM YOUR SCHOOL, CONCORDIA!
CLASSROOM NOTES from Mrs. Ellen Mills (Kindergarten Teacher)
(Each week a different teacher makes a report.)
This is the first time this school year that I get to tell you what has been happening in the
Kindergarten classroom. Mrs. Mills tells us that God has a plan for each of us. Half of the class
would like to know what that plan is right now. The rest are not sure that that would be a
good thing. We did, however, find out about God’s plans for some famous people in the Bible.
We studied Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.
Speaking of plans, the Superkids Reading program has a plan for us to learn the letters in
the alphabet and the sounds that they make. We learned about Cass (a girl) who loves to cook;
Oswald (a boy) who loves to make odd animals; Golly (a dog) who loves to sniff gardenias,
grapefruit, and garbage; and Alf (a boy) who loves to go on adventures.
In science, we learned about the tools used to observe the weather. There are gauges
to measure rain, thermometers to tell the temperature and all kinds of clouds to watch. We
even made pinwheels out of paper and straws to show how fast the wind was moving. That
was fun pointing the pinwheel into the wind and seeing it turn so fast!
One of God’s plans to feed the birds and squirrels was to grow sunflowers. Mrs. Mills
brought in some sunflower seed heads, and we got to get the seeds out. In the spring we are
going to plant some of the seeds we found and grow our own sunflowers. We also painted
pictures of sunflowers and glued some seeds on the brown part in the middle of the flowers.
Those pictures are hanging in the hallway on the clothes line. Stop by and see them because
we are “going on line in Kindergarten.”
When it rains and we cannot go outside, we get to play with play-doh in the classroom.
Mrs. Mills has many different kinds of plastic shapes to make great creations. We also play
with Legos and draw some colorful pictures. Some of those pictures end up on the bulletin
board in our lunch room. We call that board our CIA – Concordia’s Institute of Arts.
Have a wonderful fall!

man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24). That Rock is Christ, Who by His blood
has given us salvation; by the Holy Spirit we live obedient lives of service, standing on that
Rock. Earthquakes, floods, and winds do not move or harm that house; life’s problems and
temptations will not harm the believer who holds to the Rock, our Lord Jesus Christ. Trusting
in God’s strength, we respond to God’s Word by doing His will.
A Century of Strength - Since 1901 the Church Extension Fund has been focused on funding

building a nest-egg, too. Talk with your CEF representative about these products today. Or for
