Our priorities as Christians are to love God, to love, accept and know ourselves, and to love others. In the act of loving others we show our true love for God. HYMN TiS 520 Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour In the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you And also with you. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 3 INVITATION TO CONFESSION ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. 8.30am said; 10am sung Let us therefore confess our sins, in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 4 THE GLORIA 8.30am said; 10am sung Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. 5 THE COLLECT O God, whose Son has taught us that love is the fulfilling of your law: stir up within us the fire of your Holy Spirit, and pour into our hearts your greatest gift of love, so that we may love you with our whole being, and our neighbours as ourselves; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Please sit for the readings THE OLD TESTAMENT READING The book of Deuteronomy offers a fresh interpretation of Israel’s history under Moses, made after Israel’s worship had been centralised in Jerusalem. The book ends with a glimpse of the promised land. A reading from the book, Deuteronomy. Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain—that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him, ‘This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, “I will give it to your descendants”; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.’ Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigour had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended. Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses. Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequalled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his 6 entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power (34:1-12; NRSV) that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. PSALM 90 8.30am said Lord, you have been our refuge : from one generation to another. Before the mountains were born or the earth and the world were brought to be : from eternity to eternity you are God. You turn man back into dust : saying ‘Return to dust, you sons of Adam.’ For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday passing : or like one watch of the night. You cut them short like a dream : like the fresh grass of the morning; In the morning it is green and flourishes : at evening it is withered and dried up. Relent, O Lord; how long will you be angry? : take pity on your servants. O satisfy us early with your mercy : that all our days we may rejoice and sing. Give us joy for all the days you have afflicted us : for the years we have suffered adversity. Show your servants your work : and let their children see your glory. May the gracious favour of the Lord our God be upon us : prosper the work of our hands, O prosper the work of our hands! (ASB psalter 1–6; 13–17) Psalm 90: 1–6; Chant – Taylor in G 10am sung by the Choir 7 THE NEW TESTAMENT READING Paul’s letters to the church in Thessalonica are probably his earliest surviving letters. Paul writes to encourage them, reminding them of his own life and work among them. A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but though we had already suffered and been shamefully maltreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us. You remember our labour and toil, brothers and sisters; we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how pure, upright, and blameless our conduct was towards you believers. As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a father with his children, urging and encouraging you and pleading that you should lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. We also constantly give thanks to God for this, that when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word but as what it really is, God’s word, which is also at work in you believers. (2:1-13; NRSV) For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. GRADUAL HYMN TiS 569 Guide me, O thou great Redeemer 8 THE GOSPEL READING After the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem, Matthew paints a picture of the conflict between Jesus and the authorities. They ask him trap questions, but Jesus is a match for all of them. Alleluia, alleluia! All who love me will keep my words, and my Father will love them and we will come to them. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ 8.30am said; 10am sung When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’ Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: ‘What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?’ They said to him, ‘The son of David.’ He said to them, ‘How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet’ ”? If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?’ No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. (22:34–46; NRSV) For the Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 8am said;10am sung 9 REFLECTIONS ON STEWARDSHIP Followed by time to complete pledge cards. ANTHEM The strain upraise of joy and praise – Sir Arthur Sullivan MVO (1842-1900) THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH please stand Let us declare our faith in God. We believe in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. We believe in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer. Father, hear our prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord. Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 10 cf Ephesians 3 please kneel/sit THE PEACE please stand We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. OFFERTORY HYMN TiS 217 Love divine, all loves excelling – Tune (i) THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 8.30am said; 10am sung 11 All thanks and praise, glory and honour, be yours at all times, and in every place, holy and loving Father, true and living God. We praise you that through your eternal Word you brought the universe into being and made us in your own image. You have given us this earth to care for and delight in, and with its bounty you preserve our life. We thank you that you bound yourself to the human race with the promises of a gracious covenant and called us to serve you in love and peace. Above all, we give you thanks for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ: born as one of us, he lived our common life and offered his life to you in perfect obedience and trust. Therefore with angels and archangels, with apostles, and prophets, with holy men and women of every age, we proclaim your great and glorious name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 12 8.30am said; 10am sung Holy God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that we who eat and drink them in obedience to our Saviour Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, may be partakers of his body and blood, and be made one with him and with each other in peace and love. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. 8.30am said; 10am sung Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. 13 As we eat and drink this holy sacrament, renew us by your Spirit that we may be united in the body of your Son and serve you as a royal priesthood in the joy of your eternal kingdom. Receive our praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom and in whom, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. 8.30am said; 10am sung THE LORD’S PRAYER As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 14 BREAKING OF THE BREAD We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. AGNUS DEI Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. 8.30am said; 10am sung Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. THE INVITATION Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. God invites everyone to gather around his table. We extend an invitation to all to come forward and receive this Holy Sacrament or a blessing. MOTET Lord, for Thy tender mercy’s sake – John Hilton, the elder (1565-c.1609) VOLUNTARY Barcarolle [Hymn of the Nuns] from La Grande Symphonie Celèbre de Monsieur L.J.A. – Richard Francis (b.1946) 15 POST COMMUNION PRAYER We praise and thank you, O Christ, for this sacred feast: for here we receive you, here the memory of your passion is renewed, here our minds are filled with grace, and here a pledge of future glory is given, when we shall feast at that table where you reign with all your saints for ever. Amen. Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. THE BLESSING Go forth into the world in peace; be of good courage; hold fast that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honour everyone; love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS HYMN TiS 531 Sent forth by God’s blessing DISMISSAL Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Like every one you may be feeling apprehensive about either starting or increasing your giving. We are all worried about whether our future needs will be met. This is where faith comes in. In Luke 12 Jesus teaches about a rich man who stores up plenty for his retirement only to discover that the day he is to retire is the last day of his life. Jesus goes on to teach the disciples that our needs are the same needs that everyone in the world has and that we should not behave like everyone else with regard to our needs. We should not worry about whether they will be met. Instead we should realize our needs are in the hands of God and he will meet all our needs like he meets the needs of the ravens and the lilies of the field. God’s commitment to provide for us and our families is fixed. We can’t improve on that commitment no matter how much money we keep. Our giving is a statement of faith that we believe God is our provider and we trust Him. Giving by faith is a grace that draws us closer to God. As you fill out the pledge card this week consider how you might grow in faith this year by taking a further step to trust God with the needs of your life. Consider the lilies, how they grow: how they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these … how much more will he clothe you. Luke 12:27, 28 Pledge envelopes Pledge envelopes and Anglican Development Fund (ADF) giving certificates are now available in the Narthex. Please collect your box/ envelope today.
