Its heavy Obukhovskii guns, historic barracks and different kinds of defence stations tell the story of coastal defence in different eras. Örö is also an important nature destination, one of southern Finland’s most valuable concentrations of threatened species and habitat types. A hundred years of military occupation The island of Örö provides an interesting crosssection of the history of coastal defence from the days of Tsarist Russia to the present day. The Russians fortified the island in 1915–1917 when Finland was still an autonomous part of Russia. Örö belonged to Peter the Great’s naval fortress, which consisted of coastal fortresses in the Archipelago Sea as well as on the southern and northern shores of the Gulf of Finland. From Finland’s independence until the end of 2014, Örö served as a coastal fortress for the Finnish Defence Forces; thousands of conscripts have served on Örö, and the fortress played a role in both the Winter War (1939-1940) and the Continuation War (1941-1944). Today, Örö is part of the Archipelago National Park, but the Defence Forces still have surveillance equipment on the island and occasionally use it as a base for naval exercises. A valuable concentration of threatened species and habitat types Örö’s nature has remained unusually pristine and species-diverse. The island is home to several rare species of plants and butterflies, and its remote location by the open sea also makes it an important resting place for migratory birds. Örö’s most precious habitats include a long sand and gravel beach in the west of the island, pristine archipelago woods, coastal meadows and treeless grassland with numerous threatened species of plants. The island’s landscape is being maintained by means of livestock grazing. Hiking, kayaking, birdwatching, etc. There are several roads and hiking trails that lead visitors to Örö’s cultural attractions and through the island’s stunning scenery. There are a total of approximately 16,5 kilometres of roads and marked trails that run in easy terrain. There is also an exhibition in the barracks by the 12-inch artillery battery, which showcases Örö’s history and nature. Örö’s location by the open sea also makes it ideal for canoeing, boating, birdwatching and fishing.
