Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost
Welcome! We bid you a very warm welcome to our worship today.
Prelude
Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend' (Lord Jesus Christ, Be
Present Now) - BWV 632
J.S. Bach
Please stand to sing our opening Hymn No 357 in Common Praise.
1 Let all the world in every corner sing:
my God and King!
The heavens are not too high,
his praise may thither fly;
the earth is not too low,
his praises there may grow.
Let all the world in every corner sing:
my God and King!
2 Let all the world in every corner sing:
my God and King!
The church with psalms must shout,
no door can keep them out;
but above all, the heart
must bear the longest part.
Let all the world in every corner sing:
my God and King!
All
In the Name + of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Priest
All
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Priest
Words of welcome and introduction are said
We say together the Collect for Purity. We invite you to humbly kneel.
All
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known,
and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts
of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we
2
may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy
name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Confession and Absolution.
Priest
The word of God is living and active. It judges the thoughts
and intentions of the heart. All is open and laid bare before
the eyes of God to whom we give account. Therefore we
confess our shortcomings and sins in penitence and faith.
Silence is kept

Your word convicts us: „all have sinned and fallen short of
the glory of God‟.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Your word commands us: „repent, and believe the good
news‟.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Your word assures us: „Christ Jesus came into the world to
save sinners‟.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Almighty God have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

We stand to sing together the ‘Gloria in Excelsis’
4
We pray together the Collect of the Day.
Priest
All
Let us pray.
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written
for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark,
learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and
ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you
have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ; who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and
ever. Amen.
Please sit for the first letter of the first reading from Nehemiah
(Chapter 8. 1-4a,
8-12)
All the people gathered together into the square before the
Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of
the law of Moses, which the Lord had given to Israel.
Accordingly, the priest Ezra brought the law before the
assembly, both men and women and all who could hear
with understanding. This was on the first day of the seventh
month. He read from it facing the square before the Water
Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of
the men and the women and those who could understand;
and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of
the law. The scribe Ezra stood on a wooden platform that
had been made for the purpose; and beside him stood
Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on
his right hand; and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum,
Hash-baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand.
So they read from the book, from the law of God, with
interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people
understood the reading.
And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest
and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all
the people, „This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not
5
mourn or weep.‟ For all the people wept when they heard
the words of the law. Then he said to them, „Go your way,
eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions of them
to those for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy
to our Lord; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord
is your strength.‟ So the Levites stilled all the people, saying,
„Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.‟ And all the
people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions
and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood
the words that were declared to them.

Thanks be to God.
We stand to chant Psalm 119
6
Please sit for a reading from the letter to the Colossians
(Chapter 3.12-17)
As God‟s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves
with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and
patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a
complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the
Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all,
clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything
together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ
rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the
one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in
you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom;
and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and
spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or
deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God the Father through him.

Please stand to sing our Gradual hymn No 561
1 Lord, your word shall guide us
And with truth provide us:
teach us to receive it
and with joy believe it.
2 When our foes are near us,
then your word shall cheer us
word of consolation,
message of salvation.
3 When the storms distress us
and dark clouds oppress us,
then your word protects us
and its light directs us.
4 Who can tell the pleasure,
who recount the treasure
by your word imparted,
to the simple hearted?
5 Word of mercy giving
courage to the living;
word of life, supplying
comfort to the dying.
Priest

St Matthew
(Chapter 24:30-35)
Glory to you, O Lord.
All sing
8
Priest
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and
then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see
“the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven” with
power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with
a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the
four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
„From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch
becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that
summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you
know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this
generation will not pass away until all these things have
taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words
will not pass away.
At the conclusion of the Gospel
Priest
All sing
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
6 O that we, discerning
its most holy learning,
Lord, may love and fear you-evermore be near you!
Sermon
The Reverend Michael Fuller
Please stand as we affirm our faith
All
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
9
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit
and the Virgin Mary and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and
glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and
apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, (+)
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Please remain standing or kneel for our prayers
Intercessor
All
Rejoicing in the fellowship of Mary the mother of Jesus, and
St John the Beloved, our patron and all the saints we
commend ourselves and all people to your unfailing love.
Merciful Father:
Accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son our
Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
10
Please stand for the Peace
Priest
All
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Let the peace of
Christ rule in your hearts.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
All may simply exchange a sign of peace
During the singing of Hymn No 604 (tune Kingsfold), a collection will be taken.
1 Your word, O God, a living sword,
reveals within each heart
the love of self, the hidden fears,
that keep us far apart;
we seek to stand by our own strength
but fail and fall alone,
and still we find ourselves afraid
to know as we are known.
2 Your word, O God, a living sword,
cuts deep, and there it finds
the wall we build in self-defense
that blocks our sight and blinds;
we cannot see our neighbours‟ needs
above the walls and bars
that we have made to save ourselves,
and they cannot see ours.
3 Your word, O God, a living sword,
strikes deep within each soul
and opens up the path by which
you come to make us whole;
and with your love set deep within
we need not stand alone,
for love drives out our faithless fears
and makes your people one.
11
Priest
It is indeed right and good, our duty and our joy, always and
everywhere to give you thanks, Holy Father, almighty and
eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
For he is your eternal and creative Word, through whom all
things came into being; the Word made flesh who dwelt
among us, full of grace and truth.
He fulfills the Law and the Prophets, dying for our sins and
rising again in accordance with the Scriptures.
He stands among us in his risen power, opening to us his
living word, and making himself known in the breaking of
the bread.
Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the
company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious
name, for ever praising you and singing:
12
We invite you to kneel
Priest
Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant
that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your
holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the
body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same
night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this
is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance
of me. (+)
In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you
thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this
is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and
for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you
drink it, in remembrance of me. (+)
13
Let us together proclaim the mystery of faith:
Priest
All say boldly
And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his
perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;
rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,
and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this
memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our
sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this
bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.
Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in
your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so
that we, in the company of Mary the mother of Jesus, St
John the Beloved, our patron and all the saints, may praise
and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by
whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,
now and forever.
Amen.
Priest
Being made one by the power of the Spirit, let us pray with
confidence as our Saviour has taught us
All
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
14
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.
The Priest breaks the consecrated bread.

All
Lord Jesus, we thank you that you nourish us at the table of
your word and the table of your sacrament; as we feed on
you, the bread of life, may we daily grow into your likeness.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely
more than we ask or imagine. Glory to God from
generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus,
for ever and ever. Amen.

We stand for the Blessing
Priest
All
Go my brothers and sisters in peace, knowing that you have
been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,
through the living and enduring word of God;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.
Amen.
We sing our final Hymn No 433 in Common Praise
1 Lord, you give the great commission:
"Heal the sick and preach the word."
Lest the church neglect its mission
and the gospel go unheard,
help us witness to your purpose
with renewed integrity;
with the Spirit's gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.
16
2 Lord, you call us to your service:
"In my name baptize and teach."
That the world may trust your promise,
life abundant meant for each,
give us all new fervour, draw us
closer in community;
with the Spirit's gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.
3 Lord, you make the common holy:
"This my body, this my blood."
Let your priests, for earth's true glory,
daily lift life heavenward,
asking that the world around us
share your children's liberty;
with the Spirit's gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.
4 Lord, you show us love's true measure:
"Father, what they do, forgive."
Yet we hoard as private treasure
all that you so freely give.
May your care and mercy lead us
to a just society;
with the Spirit's gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.
5 Lord, you bless with words assuring:
"I am with you to the end."
Faith and hope and love restoring,
may we serve as you intend,
and, amid the cares that claim us,
hold in mind eternity;
with the Spirit's gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.
