It is amazing to welcome the new faces of our 4K and kindergartners while we are beginning to finalize the high school career of our seniors, especially when I can remember welcoming those seniors on their first day of kindergarten. During this school year everyone in our community will play a small part in making this school year a success. Every district resident gives in some way to ensure that our students have the resources that they need to make their educational journey a success. We hope that you have a bit of time to get involved with our students. Their talents will amaze you and I can promise that you will benefit as much as they do. If you have expertise and special skills to share, there is a wide variety of opportunities to volunteer with classroom teachers. Our parent organizations, such as the Booster Club and PEPO, will welcome your help. We also have a very active educational foundation that provides innovative teacher scholarships with your donations. In the larger community we also have forces at work that are focusing on local career opportunities for students. The Business Education Partnership is forging relationships that will facilitate experiences for students where they can learn about the unlimited potential of a career in manufacturing. This partnership was formed to help make connections between local business people and our future workforce. Knowing that with the advent of the silver tsunami many of our local manufacturing businesses will have job opportunities at varying skill levels for our graduates. This three-year-old partnership has led to an increase in understanding between local businesses and our local school districts. The partnership benefits the students and our local economic development in two ways. The first is by engaging the two groups in activities that increase awareness of what career opportunities are locally available now and in the near future. The second involves the sharing of information that helps our schools increase their internal understanding of what skills and abilities our students need to have to be able to secure familysustaining jobs right here in our community. Over the course of this partnership our administrators and teachers have had opportunities to participate in a series of industry tours. Places like ERCO, Ocean Spray and Domtar have opened their doors to us, so that we might get a firsthand look at what it takes to work in a modern manufacturing facility. This has allowed classroom teachers to increase their understanding of what skills students require and has informed instruction with respect to real work applications. Since our teachers are now much more familiar with local manufacturing they can have very specific and pointed answers to the age old question, “Where am I ever going to use this?” From the Business Education Partnership to the many community organizations right here in Port Edwards, great things happen because someone asked, “What can I do to make sure that the things that are important to my community continue and thrive? Thank you for asking yourself that question and for taking action to make good things happen for the students at Port Edwards Public Schools. . Blackhawk Bulletin October 2014 Page 3 JEMS/JEHS News Submitted by: Kyle Cronan—HS/MS Principal Featured this Month: Youth Apprenticeship Programs and School Attendance Concern School has gotten off to a fast start this fall at John Edwards Middle/High School. As this newsletter goes to print we will already have hosted several fall sports events and we look forward to the Homecoming celebration during the week of October 5 th th through October 11 . Make sure to mark your calendar for the Homecoming Parade, Pep Rally and Bonfire on October 9th. In this newsletter, there are two items I would like to highlight. First is the opportunity that exists in Youth Apprenticeship for many of our junior and senior students. The second item regards attendance at school. Youth Apprenticeship Over the past three years, our school district has been directly involved with the Business Education Partnership Committee sponsored by Incourage Community Foundation. One of the most immediate and student centered results of this partnership has been the development of expanded Youth Apprenticeship experiences in our local area. John Edwards High School has worked directly with the Business Education Partnership Committee and local businesses to build strong ties between the school and local area employers to provide students the opportunity to receive hands on experience in business, technology and industry. For the first time in our Youth Apprenticeship program, John Edwards High School is sponsoring a student in the Information Technology field. Additionally, we have worked with many local manufacturers to open up opportunity in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field and also the Manufacturing field. Additionally, for several years students have had the opportunity to experience the Finance field. The Youth Apprenticeship program has multiple components that make the program successful. First, students in this program are paid by their apprenticeship employers. Next, students do continue to attend school, but may have some release time built into their schedule to work with the apprenticeship employer. Students do have traditional classroom components that are required as a part of the program and relate to the field of their apprenticeship. Over the course of a calendar year, a student must work for their apprenticeship employer for a minimum of 450 hours. Students can enter this program either their junior or senior year, but junior year is preferable. In the case of at least one local high-tech manufacturing business, many past Youth Apprenticeship students have stayed on the job after high school and some have even had their technical college education paid for in part by the business. If your child is a freshmen or sophomore student, it is not too early to consider this path. Students interested in this program should consider researching the possibilities and applying by January of either their sophomore or junior year. More information on this program can be obtained by contacting the John Edwards High School Counseling Office or by contacting Gary Spencer, the School to Work Coordinator at John Edwards High School. Attendance Item In order to best serve the needs of your children we look to continually refine our attendance procedures. One attendance item in particular has caused some miscommunication both at home and at school. At the beginning of the school year, students are told to report to either the school nurse or one of the school offices if they are feeling ill or have some other health concern that needs to be tended to in a timely manner. For any students who are either ill or who have an immediate health concern, the school will work directly with the parents to best serve that student. Sometimes this may result in the student going home or possibly seeking medical attention. There have been several instances of students calling home directly or texting a parent; without the knowledge of school personnel, regarding not feeling well and then seeking to be excused from school. Inevitably, parents have shown up expecting to see their child in the office or with the school nurse, but the child is still in class because the child has not told anyone that their parent has been contacted. We do seek to work with students and parents in these matters and have no desire to keep a sick or injured child in class when that is not necessarily desirable. If your child contacts you during the day regarding being sick, please encourage your child to report to the nurse or the office. Additionally, if possible please contact the school immediately to keep us informed of the situation. With so much technology available that allows us to stay in contact with our children almost immediately, sometimes important information is not passed onto school personnel; we ask for your assistance in this matter. As always if you have any questions or concerns regarding your student, please contact me at John Edwards Middle/High School---715-887-9000, ext 102. Have a great October! Blackhawk Bulletin October 2014 Page 4 News from the Counseling Department By: Rauni Vruwink and Ann Aschenbrenner Please be advised that colleges and universities are now accepting applications for next fall. Please stop in the counseling office for application information. Our counseling staff is very willing to assist you in any way that we can. Early application is strongly encouraged and housing options fill quickly. Scholarship opportunities will be shared with seniors via Google Drive. Seniors are reminded to check this list on a regular basis so that they are aware of the opportunities that are available and the deadlines. Blackhawk Bulletin October 2014 Page 6 (Port Edwards Parent Organization) Fall Update Submitted by: Jennie Breitrick, Secretary The school year is off to a great start and PEPO had our fall kickoff meeting on Tuesday, September 9th, 2014. Welcome to our new members! Thank you to the many families that stopped by our table at Back-to-School Night. We raffled off two baskets. The first one was a movie night basket, which included a gift card to Family Video, and the second was a craft basket. The basket winners were Erica Bakken, who is the mother of Ariana Schultz, and Kerri Martinson, who is the mother of Austin & Aubreigh. Congratulations to the both of you!! Fall Festival will be held on Friday, October 24th, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All students from 4K to 5th grade are invited for this great evening of fun. All activities are free including a dinner of pizza, chips, and water/juice. There will be many games plus face painting and tattoos, and cookie decorating. Halloween costumes are welcome and fun is encouraged! We hope to see you there! Our fundraiser for this year will again be Yankee Candles. It was a huge success last year, so we decided to bring it back again this year. We are still finalizing the dates but it will be in time for the Christmas season. Look for additional information when we have finalized the dates. Remember to keep saving your Box Tops and Labels for Education. Please drop them off at the elementary school office or send them with your child to school. The box tops and labels appear on cereal boxes, juices, soups, and many other food items. We appreciate your help collecting them. Each year the box top earnings add up, and go towards the purchase of playground equipment. The Labels for Education are redeemed for classroom/school supplies. Please consider joining PEPO this school year. We appreciate any help offered and welcome your great ideas. Meetings are held during the school year on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm in the Elementary School Library. However, our next meeting will be held on Oct. 7. Above all, we want to build a stronger group of involved parents so that we can all work together to bring additional benefits to our students, now and in the future. Tammy Barstow, Co-President Tonya Callahan, Co-President Cristina Heath, Treasurer Jennie Breitrick, Secretary Blackhawk Bulletin October 2014 Page 7 CLIP & SAVE TO HELP THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Submitted by: Becky Taylor, Secretary Port Edwards Elementary School participates in four programs that bring money into our playground fund and provide a wide variety of school products used in the classrooms. The Milk Moola program directly benefits the school’s parent organization, PEPO (Port Edwards Parent Organization). We are pleased to participate in the following, with your mutual support: Box Tops for Education from General Mills Recycling Inkjet & Laser Cartridges through Cartridge World Campbells Labels for Education & Milk Moola from Kwik Trip You can help the elementary school when you Clip Box Tops Coupons from hundreds of General Mills products found throughout local stores. Turn in your box tops coupons to the elementary school. We will collect submitted box tops and mail them into General Mills. General Mills will pay our school 10¢ (ten cents) for each box tops coupon redeemed. The second easy way to help us earn money for our playground equipment is through recycled inkjet and laser cartridges. Cartridge World will pay us cash for empty printer cartridges. They remanufacture the cartridges and sell them at significant savings to their customers. Empty cartridges can be collected from homes of family and friends, parents’ workplaces and local businesses. Drop off the cartridges in the elementary school office and our school will receive money for the cartridges we collect. If you prefer to take your cartridge to have it remanufactured at their store, located at 4551 8th Street South, Suite 101 (Rapids Plaza), simply tell them you would like our elementary school to receive the credit. Even more important, students also learn about the value of recycling and the tremendous impact on the environment by eliminating tons of trash in landfills. CAMPBELL’S LABELS FOR EDUCATION PROGRAM The Labels for Education program has always been a great way to get FREE educational merchandise for our school. Campbell’s makes it easy for Port Elementary to collect points with over 150 products worth 5 points. The program will only accept specially marked caps and bag tops that feature the Milk Moola symbol. Drop off all the items you’ve collected to the elementary school office. If you have any questions, or would like to help with clipping, counting, or sorting any of our collections, please contact our Program Coordinator, Tammy Barstow, at 715-887-3105. We will submit Box Tops, Milk Caps/Bag Tops and Campbell’s Bar Codes this month so please bring them to the Elementary School by October 10. Thanks so much for your continued support. Together we can build a better school for our students! Blackhawk Bulletin October 2014 Page 9 COME ONE COME ALL The Port Edwards Elementary School Staff invites all elementary school families in grades 4K- 5 to participate in an Ice Cream Social. Tuesday, October 14th at 6:00 p.m. We will begin in the elementary school IMC. This event is being held to welcome families that are new to the district or who are sending their children to school here for the first time. We will provide all the ingredients to make ice cream sundaes in the cafeteria. Students must be accompanied by an adult. By getting to know each other better, we hope to strengthen our school and community. We hope to see you there at 6:00! Blackhawk Bulletin October 2014 Page 10 Instrumental Music Notes Submitted by: Mrs. Stelchek The music booster organization fundraiser information will be sent home with students in the beginning of October. Money earned from the fundraiser helps provide senior music scholarships, future music department trips, and instrument upgrades. Thank you in advance for your support. Currently, band students in grades 7-12 are preparing for the Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally on Thursday, Oct. 9 and the Homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 10. This is a very fun and exciting time for all of the students. We hope to see you there! All band students and their parents can check the music department website to find links and performance dates for the school year. Go to the school website and click on the class links icon to get you to the music department. The first concert performance for the school year will be the Winter Concert on Thursday, Dec. 11 in the Dorothy Alexander Auditorium. As always, admission to concerts is free. This year, Port Edwards will be hosting the Central Wisconsin Conference All Star Band and Choir in January. It is a wonderful event where students from our CWC music schools nominate students to work with a clinician during the day and put on a concert performance at 4 PM that afternoon. The concert is free and open to the public. Watch for more information in the future newsletters. Blackhawk Bulletin October 2014 Page 11 WE NEED YOUR BRUSH!! Submitted by: Steve Birno Once again, the Port Edwards Technology Education Club is building the bonfire for Homecoming. Last year’s bonfire was a huge success thanks to the vast amounts of brush and pallets that we were able to obtain. As with last year’s bonfire, we are asking for any brush, pallets, or miscellaneous lumber lying around that you do not want anymore. Please no logs, stumps, construction waste, furniture, etc. We will start brush pick-up the week before Homecoming, beginning on September 29 and continuing through October 7. Although we would like to pick up everyone’s brush, we are limited for the size of the bonfire, meaning that we may not be able to get everyone’s brush, depending on how much each person has. We ask that anyone interested in the brush pickup take the brush to the side of the road to help us to speed up pickup. Any senior community members that have brush in their yards may request it to be picked up by the Tech Ed Club, but please contact Mr. Steve Birno for arrangements. If you would like to donate your brush or miscellaneous lumber, please email Mr. Birno at [email protected] or call 715-887-9000 x245. Please leave your name, phone number, and address, so that we can pick up the materials. We will also be patrolling the residential areas of Port looking for brush, so if you forget to contact us ahead of time, it’s not a problem! Thank you once again for helping to make our Homecoming a successful one! Señora Pérez's Spanish News Submitted by: Jessica Perez Our first meeting of the Spanish Club was 9/16, and we started off the year with a bang! September 16th is Mexican Independence Day, so we celebrated by enjoying some traditional foods, drinks, and music from that country, including horchata (a rice milk drink with cinnamon) and tamales (corn dough with filling). We also elected officers and set a tentative agenda for the year. Remember to check the website (under class links) for more information about upcoming events! Also, some Spanish Club and Spanish class students will be participating in a weekend trip to Concordia Language Camp in Bemidji, MN, 11/6-11/9. There are still a couple spots left, but sign up soon, before they’re filled! Fundraising and financial aid are available to offset some of the cost! Blackhawk Bulletin October 2014 Page 12 Ecology Club News Submitted by: Jeanne Bruener and Kristi Hawk The smell of crisp apples and leaves crunching underfoot are sure signs of Fall. For members of the Ecology Club, it is also the time for us to promote our Local Foods Taste Great Fundraiser. Informational brochures and order forms have been dispersed and student sellers are busily collecting orders. Please help the community, school, and club by purchasing simple items like vegetables, fruits, cheeses, honey, coffee or a holiday wreath. Gift certificates to nearby businesses are also included. This type of sale keeps profits within our community and directly impacts our local economy by keeping hard-earned dollars within the river cities. Eco Club members will also be promoting the fundraiser at the Assumption volleyball game and at the A-B football game. Stop by and check out this year's items. Another sure sign of Fall is the football season and the annual Port Homecoming game. Look for members of the Ecology Club to be selling cupcakes after school on Thursday, Oct. 9 prior to the Homecoming Pep Rally. You will find our tent downtown this year on main street. This year's flavors: Score S'more, Blackhawklate, Victory Vanilla, and of course Port Pride Pumpkin. Any remaining cupcakes will be sold on Friday during the football contest. Advisors and members of the Ecology Club will be hosting a new event titled, "Local Food Rendezvous" on Friday, October 17. This event will be held in the Alexander Auditorium and will serve as our club's community service project for this school year. While sharing a meal to raise awareness of hunger needs within our community, stories will be shared, decorated bowls will be sold, and the relationship with our neighbors strengthened. Please plan to join us at the Local Food Rendezvous on Friday, Oct 17 from 5-8 pm and check out our flyer further describing the event. Advanced meal tickets and pre-sales of the student and staff decorated bowls will take place on Friday, Oct 10 after school and throughout the Homecoming football game. Meal tickets and bowls will also be sold in advance at the elementary school on Tuesday, Oct 14 during the Ice Cream Social. Please plan to attend one of these two evenings in order to reserve your student's bowl. Any bowls not reserved by the ice cream social will be open to the public for sale on the 17th. The word rendezvous in French means "a gathering". Please plan to rendezvous with us on Friday, Oct 17th from 5-8 pm in the Alexander Auditorium. Blackhawk Bulletin October 2014 Page 13 Local Food Rendezvous Friday, October 17 The Ecology Club is hosting a “Local Food Rendezvous” Our community meal will be held on Friday, October 17 between 58 pm. We will be gathering at the Alexander Auditorium to share stories about our village’s past, support local food systems and share a meal. Proceeds will be shared among local food organizations, UNICEF, and seed money for the growth of our school gardens to further promote locally-sourced food. Guests of this meal will be treated to a simple meal of soup, bread, dessert, and beverage. The ecology club will be preparing Minestrone Soup. Additional soup donations will be sought. Also, sales of student and staff decorated bowls will symbolize hunger needs within our community. Suggested Pricing: Meal +Bowl - $ 10 Meal only - $ 5 Bowl only - $ 7 Family Pricing - $ 50 includes all meals + bowls Bowls may be previewed in the high school’s cafeteria preceding and throughout the Homecoming Football game on 10/10.
