Faculty of Natural Sciences presents Mathematics of Knitting Guest lecture featuring Dr. Julia Collins University of Edinburgh, UK Friday, May 8, 2015 2 pm – 3 pm Hall TB103 ABOUT THE SPEAKER Julia Collins finished her Ph.D. in knot theory at the University of Edinburgh in 2011. After that she has actively popularized science and especially mathematics to the general audience. ABSTRACT What does mathematics have to tell us about knitting? And what does knitting have to tell us about mathematics? In this talk we explore some of the surprising links between these two different fields and see some beautiful mathematical ideas that knitting can help us to understand. She visits Finland as a guest of the Finnbrit Centre and makes a tour of public talks in several cities. In Tampere she is hosted by the LUMATE Centre (www.lumate.fi). Welcome to this open event!
