Good Mental Health, Empathy and Safety and Issue 06, 2014

REPORT FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
GARVILLE NETBALL CLUB
On Tuesday, 9 September teaching and support staff were
involved in a collaborative professional development program.
Home of the ‘Great Greys’
State Premier League Grand Finalist 2014
Some of the highlights from this day included a session which
examined and collected teachers’ perspectives on the possible
choice of a language programme at Findon. It also focused on
how such an important choice could help develop stronger
links to inter-cultural understandings within our other learning
programs. Guest speakers Kylie Hill (language teacher) and
Principal Rob Shepherd from Le Fevre High School shared their
experiences with languages and provided a thought provoking
session. The re-introduction of a language at Findon, with strong
connections to other learning areas, further consolidates our
commitment to the delivery of a robust Australian Curriculum.
Another session focused on improving the options for the
delivery of resource materials to students in other ways (e.g.
through the production of video lessons and interactive
resources). Eventually the lesson materials could be available
for students to view online 24/7 to increase their learning
opportunities.

Last year Findon High School supported R U
OK? Day as we ended our Good Mental Health
program. Two of our girls and two of our boys
finished first and second.
Term 3 has now become a Good Mental Health
term. It is a term that encourages all of our
young people to look after themselves, each
other and the ones they love in ways they may
not have thought too much about. It has also
been a term of looking to make Findon High
School an even better place to be.
Like last year we have tried to address the topic
of Good Mental Health across all year levels.
However, this year we have taken a different
approach.
Towards the end of last term during Life Long
Learning, the Year 12s had some sessions
around looking after their own mental health,
particularly as they head towards the end of
their high school years.
The Year 10s and 11s attended a seminar, Insight,
presented by Centacare, using information from
The Black Dog Institute, and this covered the
topic of mood disorders, what the symptoms
are, what to do and how to access support. The
Year 11s have also had some sessions around
mental health.
The Year 8s and 9s have been doing a series
we have titled Empathy and Safety over the
course of this term. The topics covered in these
sessions have included Safe Schools, Bystander
Behaviour, Developing Empathy and Acts of
Kindness. They will also be having a look at the
Understanding and Promoting Good Mental
Health series from last year in Term 4.
Insight Seminar with Year 10 & 11s
This year Findon supported The Roar Effect
– Revolution Red campaign on Monday
September 15. Revolution Red is a campaign
designed to paint our communities red
with a message of hope. The Roar Effect is a
movement that is working to empower people
to be carriers of hope in their world¹. On this
day we held a whole school assembly with a
guest speaker from The Roar Effect. Everyone
was encouraged to wear red and donate and
there were red ribbons for sale to support this
cause. There were also lunchtime activities, all
designed around spreading hope, as well as
Hope Balloons and a very special Wall of Hope.

MUSIC NEWS
RADIO INTERVIEW, 29/7/14
The last few months have been a busy time for our Music
Department, finally getting to present the results of many
hours of practice both within lesson time and out of hours
as well. Here is a snapshot of the various activities our Music
students have been involved in.
As a result of hearing our talented music students’
performance at the Mid-Year Concert, Peter Goers invited
guitarist Kelsey Marschall and drummer Matthew DiGiorgi
to the ABC studios to be interviewed by him on his evening
radio program. It was a wonderful opportunity for the
students, both of whom are in Year 9, to be acknowledged in
such a way and was a lot of fun as well!

The Year 10 and Year 12 Music classes performed together
at Brompton Primary School. This was the first time
our students have performed there and they were very
enthusiastically received at the whole school performance.
The Year 9 and Year 11 Music classes had their chance as
well, performing at Seaton Park Primary School. It has been
a while since we have visited this school and it was a treat to
perform in their new gym, again to a most excited audience
of primary school students.

PRIMARY SCHOOL PERFORMANCES, 4/6/14 AND 17/6/14
This year’s concert was a huge success and I am very grateful
that everyone’s hard work paid off. Again, the venue was
the Festival Function Centre on Findon Road with Findon
High School old scholar Peter Goers as our guest compere.
He certainly entertained all with his humour and helped
our students to perform outstandingly. I was very proud of
each and every one of them on the night. Special thanks to
the many staff and parent supporters on the night and to
old scholar Harlie Taladucon for masterfully controlling the
sound and the screened images on the night.

ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCE, 25/8/14
Our school superband was invited to perform at a whole
school assembly. Taylah Williams (vocals), Mason Durnell
(guitar), Kelsey Marschall (bass) and Connor Ackerley (drums)
certainly impressed with their confident and energetic
presentation. Special thanks to Claye Hutchens who assisted
with setting up the sound system on the day.
YEAR 12 ASSESSMENT NIGHT, 25/6/14
Following the Mid-Year Concert, the Year 12 solo voice
students were involved in a small performance in our school
Music Suite as part of their assessment requirements.
Although there were a few nerves at having to sing on their
own, the students all completed the task and, I’m sure, will
grow in confidence as a result.
Mason, Connor, Kelsey and Taylah
Coming up in the next few months are performances by
various students at the second Year 12 Assessment night, the
Year 12 Valedictory Night, the Twilight Concert and the Year
11 Final Assembly. It certainly is a wonderful thing for our
music students to have so many performance opportunities!

End of Term 4
The Year 12 year is very quickly coming to an end. Many
Stage 2 subjects will have completed their course outlines
by the end of Term 3 and will be tidying up loose ends early
in Term 4. Our Year 12 students have also been counselled
this term by many tertiary institutions regarding pathways,
enrolment procedures and options that are available to
them. Our student counsellor, along with our SACE/Vet
coordinator, have worked closely with the senior students,
ensuring that they are being advised with the most current
information for life beyond Year 12.
The last official day for the Year 12s will be Term 4, Week
3, Wednesday 29th October. On this day the school will
officially farewell the students and wish those who have
exams the best of luck. That evening will also be the much
anticipated Valedictory Evening where Year 12s will receive
their Year 12 completion certificates and major awards.
Special guests, parents and friends will be in attendance. The
Valedictory Evening is a major event on the school calendar
and we look forward to as many parents and friends in
attendance. Official invitations will be posted to all Year 12
parents/guardians closer to the date.

HELP SAVE OUR CANTEEN!
As you know Findon High School has, for most of its history,
run a convenient, friendly and efficient canteen but you may
not know it runs independently of school funding.
Over the last 2-3 years our canteen has become less viable
due, in part, to a steady drop in sales. We now find ourselves
in the situation where we must show an improvement in
our operations or face possible closure, as have many other
canteens in Metro Adelaide.
We have already implemented a number of cost-saving
measures but the most obvious solution is to improve sales.
Please give some consideration as to how you, our school
community, can support us. This can be as simple as buying
that extra item each time you come in.
We have included a Canteen Menu with this newsletter for
your information. Toni Martino, our manager, is happy to
take orders and your feedback is always welcome.

SENIOR SCHOOL REPORT
As the term quickly winds down all students in Years 10
and 11 have now completed their subject selection process
for 2015. Students have been counselled regarding their
preferred career pathways and the selection of subjects
for next year. We, as a school, have been pleased with
the process and the amount of research that many of our
students put in place to make the correct decisions about
their futures.
