Advanced Technology
for Bottom Ash Treatment
Suomen Erityisjäte Oy’s dry separation installation is the first of its kind in
Finland. The installation utilizes sieves, magnets, and eddy currents, as well
as a ballistic separator based on ADR (Advanced Dry Recovery) technology
developed at Delft University of Technology. Unlike traditional methods, the
dry separation process does not require pre-ageing of bottom ash. The treatment
separates the wet mineral fractions from the coarser ash fractions and frees the fine metal
particles from sticky minerals, resulting in an optimal recovery of metals. This also means that
the produced mineral fractions are cleaner as well.
In addition to Finland, ADR installations are currently used to treat bottom ash in Germany,
the Netherlands, North America, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Annually, more than 5 million tonnes of bottom ash around
the world is treated with this technology.
High Recovery Rate of Metals
The bottom ash is pre-processed by sieving out fractions larger than 50 mm. From the 0 to 50 mm
fractions that are left, the installation produces two different particle sizes of ferrous metal fractions
(0 to 12 mm and 12 to 50 mm), fine fractions (0 to 2 mm), and three particle sizes of mineral fractions
and three particle sizes of non-ferrous metal fractions (particle sizes 2 to 5 mm, 5 to 12 mm and 12
to 50 mm). The recovery rate of non-ferrous metal fractions provided by this technology is
between 70 and 80%.
The installation separates the various fractions highly
efficiently: even non-ferrous metal particles smaller
than 1 mm can be recovered from fractions of under
5 mm. Non-ferrous metal fractions, which include
valuable metals such as copper and aluminium, are
shipped to an upgrading centre in the Netherlands, for
further separation into elements, and then sold to metal
refineries. Ferrous metals, as well as non-ferrous metals
larger than 12 mm, are sold directly in Finland.

Utilizing Mineral Fractions
Between 75 and 80% of the fractions produced with the dry separation
technology are mineral fractions, and utilizing them is an important part
of bottom ash treatment. In terms of their technical attributes, the mineral
fractions are equivalent to sand, gravel and aggregate. They can be utilized in
civil engineering by substituting them for natural materials.
Bottom ash mineral fractions can also be utilized in concrete and cement industries.
The amount of sand and gravel that bottom ash fractions can be substituted for in concrete
products is approximately 20 to 50%, depending on the quality of the mineral fractions.
Suomen Erityisjäte Oy and its partners are committed to researching and developing new ways to utilize mineral fractions.
Quality Control
The quality of the produced fractions is monitored. Quality control samples are taken directly from the output stream.
Non-ferrous fractions are examined twice a day. Metal concentrations are measured with a simple field test, by crushing and
sieving. The installation’s settings are adjusted based on the results to optimize the separation of metals.
