ALUMNI BAND NEWS www.uclalumniband.org UCLA Alumni Band – Celebrating 39 Years of providing music for UCLA Athletics, Alumni, and football fanatics October 24, 2014 HOME FOOTBALL vs. University of Arizona Wildcats Saturday, November 1, 2014 Call Time: 2:45pm QUALIFYING EVENTS / u$c TICKETS The Bruins return home to the Rose Bowl hoping to duplicate their 2012 demolition of the Arizona Wildcats and keep alive their hopes for another 9-win season. This day is also the Band Alumni reunion and many Alumni Band members will be rehearsing with the student band after 4:00pm so we are going to try to have a Porta-Sons concert from 3:00pm to 3:45pm. The Alumni Band will play its regular concert from 4:30pm to 6:30pm and then the Court of Champions concert from 6:45pm to 7:15pm. Those Alumni Band members participating in the band reunion rehearsal should come to the Alumni Band area as soon as possible after the reunion rehearsal. This is an ambitious schedule but the weather will not be over 100 and if we drink enough healthy fluids we should float through the day without even noticing the blisters on our feet, sunburn, and split lips. It will be way fun. Since the u$c football game is at the Rose Bowl this year, band members who perform at 7 or more of the 13 Qualifying Events will earn a free ticket to the game. All members may order up to two tickets even if they did not earn a free ticket. Extra tickets or tickets for those who did not earn free tickets cost $105. Those who qualify for free tickets must inform Rochelle that they plan to use the free ticket. Please bring a check for these tickets no later than pregame before the November 1 Arizona game. If you want more than two tickets, bring payment for those in a separate check and the band will attempt to fill those orders. Please try to bring UCLA guests. Trojans are great comic relief and police blotter, but they are really annoying at football games. If you have questions about your qualifying status for a free u$c ticket, please email Charlie Yacoobian, our Band president, at [email protected]. MEMBERSHIP ROSE BOWL SEATING The Alumni Band would like to welcome 10 new members to the Alumni Band Family this year! We will have pictures and biographical information for the newsletter as soon as we remember our cell phone password. We hope to continue this exciting trend, so be sure to tell all your friends and co-workers who are fellow Bruin alumni about how much fun you have playing with the Alumni Band. When bringing prospective or new members to an event, please remember to contact Rebecca in advance so she can make arrangements and ensure they receive a proper welcome. When inside the Rose Bowl please take care to sit in the band’s assigned seats. These are seats up to row 7 in section 2-L (single and double digit seat numbers) and up to row 9 in section 1-H (triple digit seat numbers). I know this sounds complicated, especially to North Campus types. I just ask Marty Campman where to sit, but not everyone in the Rose Bowl can do this because even though Marty has memorized the lyrics, chords, and bass (tuba) line to every song in the Alumni Band song book, he has not yet memorized this week’s Rose Bowl seating chart. GATE ENTRY PROCEDURE BAND ALUMNI REUNION If you are participating in the Band Alumni Reunion, see Rebecca for pamphlets you can distribute at the rehearsal to anyone interested in joining us. After the rehearsal, bring your band alumni friends back with you to play with us at our pregame concert! MUSIC We will continue to have our new music available at the remaining games. If you need individual pieces of music replaced or need a new folder, please contact our Librarian, Lee Panman, at [email protected] prior to your next event so he can have your music ready for you. EXTRA GAME TICKETS If you require additional guest tickets please arrange the tickets before the day of the game because it is very distracting for those of us who play wind instruments to say “NO “ and blow (blat?) simultaneously. There was some confusion at the gate entrance at the Memphis game because the procedure for entering the stadium is stored in Brett Hundley’s secret health file and will not be published until kickoff, but Rochelle will be at the gate to help guide the band members and guests into the stadium. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL PLEASE RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP – those people who have not paid membership will not be given tickets at the game, so please pay when you arrive at the pregame concert either by check or cash (no coins) since you did not spend it on fried bad food at the County Fair. NEW WEBSITE Thanks the to hard work of our newlywed Nerd-in-Chief Carlos Sandoval, the band has a new website and will have a new sign-up system very soon. Watch for instructions to be sent out shortly. NEW MEMBERS WELCOMED NEW TAILGATE LOCATION Our new tailgate location has worked out very well this season. For those who did not attend the first games and watched them on television, it was hot, and we hope both your central air and cable service flaked out. The new location is about 100 yards west of our old location and is close to the restroom building. It is really hard to miss. If you cannot find us, you will receive an honorary geography degree from u$c. The band always welcomes new members to join us in our musical fun. Please encourage anyone you know who qualifies for the band to join us. For details send email to [email protected]. We will have membership pamphlets for prospective members at the games, so see Rebecca Panman if you would like to get some to give to your friends. FAVORITE MEMORIES BAND EXPANDS GEEK PRESENCE The UCLA Alumni Band has a website www.uclalumniband.org and a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/uclalumniband and an Instagram account uclalumniband and a Twitter page uclalumniband So now there are four UCLA Alumni Band methods for you to spend your time on the internet instead of watering your chia pet. We are still requesting that band members send us information on their favorite UCLA Band or Alumni Band memories so we can post them in a future newsletter or other band publication. If the memories are not appropriate for a family publication send them in anyway and we will publish them on the internet instead. We are also collecting pictures of band members wearing their Alumni Band shirts on their exotic vacations. So if you went someplace exciting like Tulare, Delano, Modesto, or Katmandu, and wore your band shirt, and remembered to take a picture, and have not deleted the picture off your camera, please email it (the picture, not the shirt) to Rebecca Panman at [email protected]. 2014 Band Schedule Day Date Sun 12/8/13 Sun 1/19/14 Mon 12/30/13 Sat 2/8/14 Sat 2/22/14 Sun 3/16/14 Sat 4/5/14 Sat 5/3/14 Sat 8/23/14 Sat 9/6/14 Sat 10/4/14 Sat 10/11/14 Sat 11/1/14 Sat 11/22/14 FRI 11/28/14 Opponent/Event Gymnastics Meet the Bruins Gymnastics vs. Oregon State* Women’s Basketball vs. U$C Gymnastics vs. Arizona State* Gymnastics vs. Stanford* Gymnastics vs. Utah* and Bowling Green Baseball vs. Long Beach State Softball vs. Stanford* Annual Rehearsal/BBQ Football vs. Memphis Football vs. Utah* Football vs. Oregon* Football vs. Arizona* Football vs. U$C* Football vs. Stanford* Location TV Call Time 2014 Qualifying Event Wooden Center YES Pauley Pavilion YES Pauley Pavilion YES Pauley Pavilion YES Pauley Pavilion YES Pauley Pavilion YES Jackie Robinson YES Easton Stadium YES Hirsch Castle YES Rose Bowl YES Rose Bowl YES Rose Bowl YES Rose Bowl ESPN 2:45 PM YES Rose Bowl PROBABLY TBA NO Rose Bowl ABC 8:30 AM NO *PAC-12 contest For late-breaking news and other updated information about the UCLA Alumni Band, go to our website, www.uclalumniband.org.
