pushing me to better myself, as well as actually
suggesting illustration would be a suitable
avenue to explore at university level, I have no
idea where I would be right now!

WOODCROFT WILDSPACE
This year Mrs Player the art lead practitioner at Winchmore School has been working on a series
of projects in collaboration with Woodcroft wildspace.
The ARP unit consisting of 6 boys with special needs (including autism) have designed and
realised a sensory garden at the wildspace. The pupils made ceramic insect houses in school
with the art teacher then visited the site to install them and put in a range of plants and
vegetables to grow. The project will also form the basis of their Arts Award Discover certificate
which they are working towards. Plans are afoot to extend the sensory garden into the second
plot as the ARP unit in school expands. The pupils have found great joy in the creation of the
garden and it has been used to support a range of developmental and social skills.
The summer school was formed of a 7 day
project with 5 days in the school holidays
focused on creating a Winchmore sculpture
trail at the Woodcroft Wildspace Centre. A
group of 14 Year 7 and Year 8 pupils created a
range of ceramic sculptures and mosaic pieces
to adorn a small path within the site. Masks
have also been made from the original clay dug
from the wells. Over 70 pieces of art work were
produced by the group who are also using the
project to complete an Explore Level Arts
Award.
Mrs Player, Mrs Tapscott-Drake and Miss Crummenauer were delighted with the outcome as
were the parents who were able to visit the work on the final summer school day.
We received fabulous news on our return to school that our projects contributed to the wildspace
winning a Gold Enfield in Bloom competition.

CHAIR OF GOVERNORS
I am delighted to be elected as the Chair of Governors and I would like to congratulate
Belinda Chapple on her election as Vice Chair.
Belinda previously served as the Chair of Governors and I am very pleased that she has
agreed to stay on as Vice Chair and to mentor me while I learn my new role.
Meanwhile we have to say a sad farewell to Pat Hamill, a very experienced governor
and a wonderful role model for new governors. We also have to say a sad farewell to
Wendy Winter, who served as a staff governor for many years, and who always offered
very sensible advice at governor meetings. However we are very pleased that Wendy is
going to continue as the School's Economic Wellbeing Coordinator. Kirstie Das’s term of office as a Staff
Governor has also come to an end, but we are delighted that she remains at school as Head of Learning for
the Olivier Community. We would like to thank Pat, Wendy and Kirstie on behalf of the whole school for
their tremendous contributions over many years.
The governors would like to welcome everyone back to school at the start of the new autumn term. We would
particularly like to say a special "welcome” to our new Year 7 pupils. We hope you have settled in well and
are looking forward to the next year. We would also like to congratulate our Year 11 and 13 students for their
excellent results - the best ever in the history of the school. This demonstrates the hard work and commitment
of our staff and students and shows how we are building improvement year on year. We are delighted to say
that we are now ranked as one of the best schools in Enfield.
A group of governors attended the recent open evening and took the opportunity to talk to prospective
parents, carers and students. Many of them told us how impressed they were by the school. Typical
comments included: "Very welcoming school", "Excellent ethos", "Inspiring school" and "Students are very
proud of their school and enthusiastic to show us their work”. It is clear Winchmore is a school where people
want to be. We would like to thank all the students and staff who worked so hard to show our local
community what a fantastic school we are.

Witchmore Science Spooktacular Fair and Fireworks display
On Friday 24 October 2014 we are holding our first Spooktacular Fair in
school from 5.00pm to 7.30pm with a Fireworks display starting at 7.30pm.
The fireworks display will be set to music and should be Spooktacular! There
will also be some ‘spot prizes’ for any younger children who come wearing
fancy dress. All children attending must be accompanied by an adult. Entry
will be £3.00 per person. Payment can be made via ParentPay or cash on the
door.
We have a number of local businesses signed up for stalls as well as students
and staff hosting stalls. The school hopes that our six Communities will each
operate a stall so you may get further letters home explaining how you can
help. All monies made, by either the Communities or individual VT groups,
will go to support school projects or designated charities.
If you are interested in having a stall, especially if you run a craft or small business from home, please contact
me at [email protected] so that we can discuss this further. We are hoping to make this a
great community effort so the more support we have from parents and carers, the better. We look forward to
seeing you on the 24th.

YEAR 11 GEOGRAPHY FIELDTRIP TO LOUGHTON ESSEX
Fifty GCSE pupils accompanied by Mr
Chapman, Mrs Tidmarsh, Mr Cooper and Mr
Lasocki, visited the Epping Forest Field Study
centre on 19 September. The work carried out
here was worth up to 25% of their final mark.
They collected data along Debden Brook to
prove or disprove the Bradshaw model, which
outlines how a typical river behaves.
Fieldwork techniques included, standing in
the river and measuring its speed, width,
depth and the size of pebbles that it was
carrying.
The pupils were excellent in the way that they carried out their work and we wish them well in
their exams next summer.

PERU UPDATE
The Peru group are continuing with their fundraising. Several members had a stall at the Palmers
Green festival and were very pleased with the outcome and it was a great opportunity to
showcase our school to the local community.
Once again they have been providing refreshments at various parents’ and carers’ evenings and
school events and they are waiting to hear from our local Sainsbury’s about possible bag
packing.
The group will also be organising a Scalextric
Night on the 18 November so please look out for
more details.

can be a quick and effective way of communicating and we routinely use it to notify unexpected nonattendance, so that you would know quickly if your child failed to attend school.

School Gateway allows us to send you messages instantly just like text messages – only much
cheaper. The more people who download the free App for School Gateway, the more money we can
save which can be better spent on educating your child.

Electronic communication is only one of the methods we use to keep in touch and keep you
informed; it will not be replacing everything else.

Effective communication remains a priority, but as ever we need to try to get best value and
ensure that we maximise the benefit to our students.

STOP PRESS
As we went to print we received confirmation from the Scholastic Bookfair company that the
Peru team have won the company’s national competition.
The Peru team led by Esen Kupeli, and with the support of Mrs Cordiner and Miss Binnie,
organised the book fair last term. Holly Marquez produced a diary of the event and this was
entered for the competition and achieved first prize.
Part of the prize is an IPad and the group have decided to raffle this at a number of events prior
to Christmas and the winner will be announced at the Winter Concert. Tickets will be £1 each
so please look out for the Peru team next term. Tickets can also be purchased on Parentpay.

LLOYDS BANK—DAY TO MAKE DIFFERENCE
We have been very fortunate this half term to be part of the Lloyds Bank volunteering staff
scheme, ‘A Day to Make a Difference’.
Lloyds staff are encouraged to spend one day a year in their local community volunteering for
local projects and we have had two teams visit
us.
The first team came for the day to help Ms
Liddle prepare the school garden and wildlife
garden for the winter. The team helped clear
ground, cut trees, painted the shed and put up
some bird boxes. They worked very hard and Ms
Liddle and her gardening club members were
certainly very grateful for the help.
The second team has been into school to offer
interviews to our Year 10 students to help them
prepare for Work Experience. The team were happy to discuss CV’s, interview skills and
personal branding as well as offer general advice
about careers in banking.
We have already applied for some more help
from the Lloyds staff and are hoping to see
some of them at our Christmas Fair which
this year will be on the 9th December in the
school hall.

YEAR 7 and YEAR 8 NETBALL
Winchmore Year 7 and Year 8 netball team
played their first match against Latymer this
month. The Year 8 team drew 6-6 with all the
goals coming from Letitia Innis.
Year 7 narrowly lost 2-7.
With more practice these teams will
produce better results.
Miss Murphy and Miss Brazier are proud of
you all.
YEAR 7 FOOTBALL RESULT
The Year 7 football team had their first match against Highlands and managed to beat them 4-2. Mark
Carroll was the star of the match scoring a hat trick and Samuel Ogunsanya scored the other one. Daniel
Evans put on a mature display of football and earned the Man of the Match award. Mr Passey’s
coaching and leadership was praised by the pupils.
Miss Brazier who watched the match was impressed with the exceptional talent on show. Well done
boys make sure you keep it up.

CROSS COUNTRY RELAY
For the first time in Winchmore history 3 Year 7 teams entered the Cross Country Relay
Championships where each runner completes a 1200 metre circuit of the golf course. There are 4
runners in each team.
The Year 7 girls team consisted of:

The team came 19th in a race with stiff opposition,
from many other schools.

WINCHMORE JUNIOR GIRLS FOOTBALL vs LATYMER
The long awaited first match was here after
several practices. Playing 4-4-2, and led by
Captain Berfin Guclu and Vice captain
Katerina Joannou. The warm up saw
Winchmore having extensive shooting
practice that came in good stead during the
match.
Winchmore went down 0-2 before a stunning
right footed goal by Sarah Jade Yates put us
back in the match, with several near misses
from the Winchmore strikers.
The back four consisting of Asha Calnan, Hannah Berry, Jada Branch and Tanya Lancaster were under
immense pressure but handled it well. The midfield Katerina Joannou, Melis Mehmet, Ikra Boz and
Berfin Guclu, worked very hard and were the engine room of the team. The two strikers Sarah-Jade and
Teiko Apafo had numerous shots but did not bear fruit.
Then Latymer scored again to make the score 1-3, but the Winchmore girls did not give up. With some
changes of players bringing on Lelitia Innis, Jo-anne Chisvo and goal keeper Simran Singh, the girls
had a new lease of life.
With Katie Anderson, Nayana Brathwaite, Tyler McKenzie and Katherine Tembo also playing a part in
the match.
Latymer scored another goal making it 1-4 but two great goals from Player of the Match Melis Memet
(nominated by the Latymer team) scoring twice brought the score to 3-4 Winchmore had a real chance
to get level but several chances went begging. With Latymer scoring 2 more goals and Teiko Apafo
scoring for Winchmore. We ended up losing 4-6, but it was a great match played in a good spirit. Prince
Darkwa-Marfo from our 6th Form was the referee.
Miss Brazier was proud of the whole squad of players. Well done girls. Thanks to Mrs Khan who took
our team photo.
FITNESS TRAINING
The Year 7 pupils have been taking part in a series of Fitness Testing, including the Multi Stage Fitness
Test and a Cross Country run. Here are 7 RNMG at the start of the race both Samuel and Soloman
Ogunsanya won their respective races. Well done.

A NEW LOOK TO OUR SCHOOL RESTAURANT
The beginning of term saw the opening of our
new, bright and modern servery providing a
much improved service with three hot food
counters, two for pupils in Years 7-11 and one
for staff and sixth formers, all offering the
same menu choices, along with ‘grab and go’
counters for baguettes and sandwiches;
granola, jelly and fruit pots, plus a variety of
chilled drinks. We also have a self-service
salad bar stocked daily with a choice of 6-8
different fresh salads to tempt every palate.
Our school chef, Patrick, with our Catering
Manager, June, and their team of 11 catering
staff, ensure freshly cooked and appetising
food is delivered to the counters for breakfast,
break and lunch - check out weekly menus on
our school web site or on ParentPay.
