Soora Samharam (the first temple to
Celebrate in the Tri-State Area)
Soora samharam is a ritual folk performance that recreates the vanquishing (samharam) of the
Asuras by Lord Muruga. It is performed in Tamil Nadu and Kerala at temples dedicated to Him.
The festival starts on Skanda Shashti day with Abhishekam and Raksha Bandanam
To Lord Muruga on Oct 29, 2014.
Soora Samharam performance is based on the story of Murugan, also known as Skanda, as given in
the Skandapurana. The performance ends with the killing of Soorapadman (or Padmasura) and his
race which is depicted through the symbolic beheading of the four Asuras Anamughan, Panumughan,
Simhamughan and Soorapadman. The Asuras are beheaded by Murugan using his weapon the vel a
kind of spear or javelin.
For the performance the vel is specially consecrated and during the staging of the show it is
ceremonially placed on the neck of the effigy after which the head is removed, depicting the
beheading of the Asura.
Intertwined with this story, would be a folk dances like Kavadi Chindu, Karagaattam and Vel dance
performances by Sundaram Bhajan Group Sloka Class Kids.
Indra and his wife Indrani were very happy to see that Soorapadman has been vanquished in the
battle with Muruga, as all of man kind were afraid of the Asura and everyone was hiding and living in
