Preamble Communication:

Preamble
Structural geology deals with the different deformation structures in the
lithosphere to know how they appear and to understand how and why they are
formed. In the recent years there is a decline in the number of researchers in the
field of structural geology. India for the size of the country is replete with
different rocks ranging in age from the Archean to the most Recent.
Precambrian terrains show polyphase deformation. Rocks of the youngest, like
the Himalayas are dominated by fold and thrust geometry with the frontal belt
showing signatures of soft rock and sediment deformation. Structural
geological investigations play a significant role in understanding how rocks get
deformed and the implications of such studies in regional tectonics. In NE India,
with its vast natural resources, there is always an urgency to unfold the
evolutionary history of the sedimentary basins and understanding the basin
modifiers during the evolution.
The Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University, Assam is
organizing the third “Rock Deformation and Structures (RDS-III)
Conference and One-Day workshop on “Construction of balanced cross sections
and structural profiles in deformed terrains, from October, 29-31, 2014, at the
Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University. Considering the
complexities of the geology of petrloliferous basins (like Upper Assam and AssamArakan Basin), such a conference can provide a proper stage for the academia and
geoscientists from neighboring mineral industries and similar organizations to discuss
various problems and even may help in arriving at solutions to some of the hitherto
unsolved problems, e.g. occurrences of radioactive minerals, geo-hazards and
problems related to geotechnical investigations.
The tectonics of basin evolution and basin analysis heavily relies on
construction of correct cross sections and validating the same with balanced
sections. The one day training programme on construction of balanced cross
sections is going to help in interpreting the basin geometry in more precise way
and also identification of potential locations for mineral exploration
About the University and the Department
The Dibrugarh University is a premier academic institution in the NE
India with recognized high standard of teaching and research. Established in the
year 1965, it rose to a leading institute in the entire region within a short time
span. The Department of Applied Geology was established in 1970 with total
faculty strength of 11 members. At present two parallel PG programmes are
being conducted by the Department: a 4 semester M. Sc. course in Applied
Geology and a Post -M. Sc., M. Tech. course in Exploration Geophysics of
equal duration. The alumni are gainfully employed in most of the geological
organizations and in premier oil companies of the country and abroad. Besides
teaching and research, the department runs consultancy services under the
umbrella of “University Consultancy Services”. The clients comprise of both
government and private enterprises working in the region. The Department is
the recipient of DST's FIST-I and U.G.C's DRS (SAP) grants. The research
projects granted to this department have been sponsored by agencies like DST,
CSIR, ISRO, UGC, ONGCL and OIL. The OIL has instituted the K. D. M. Chair
in this Department in 1993 for promotion of R & D activities.
Climate:
After the end of summer season, climate of Dibrugarh in the month
October is very pleasant. The maximum temperature on average would be about
250C and the minimum would fall to about 150C.
Communication:
Dibrugarh Town is situated in the northeastern corner of Assam.
Located about 442 km east of Guwahati, Dibrugarh is connected with the
rest of the country by air, railway and road. The nearest airport is at
Mohanbari, about 22 km from Dibrugarh. Dibrugarh Town Railway station
is linked by the Rajdhani Express and many other Mail and Express trains.
Road communication from Guwahati is good, as luxury bus services ply to
Dibrugarh both in the morning (between 07:00 hrs 09:00 hrs) and in the
evening (between 18:00 hrs 21:00 hrs).
