NATIONAL SEMINAR ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS AND CHALLENGES IN EARTH SCIENCES November 29, 2014 Organized by Department of Geology Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh - 202002 (Under DRS-SAP, UGC Programme) ABOUT THE SEMINAR The proposed seminar will be organized to highlight the recent developments, challenges and strategies in Earth sciences. Presently Earth science demands an interrelationship of its allied branches for a better understanding of the surface and internal processes of the earth. Developments in geological science is important for addressing topics of societal interest, including natural hazards, natural resources, human health and environmental issues. Geological concepts help us understand the Earth system with connection to related field such as mineralogy, geochemistry, structural geology and geodynamics. The objectives of the seminar are to discuss the recent developments in geosciences and highlight the present and upcoming challenges with special emphasis on petrology and environmental issues as one of the fundamental element of a comprehensive national research and development programme in the Earth sciences. The seminar will aim at identifying future geological and environmental development programmes of the country. Major theme of the seminar will be focused on petrological process, ore genesis process, tectonomagmatic scenarios and 1 environmental issues. The deliberation of the seminar will be very much helpful towards formulating process/policies for mineral exploration, genesis of various minerals deposits and potential environmental degradation. These deliberations will have important bearing and national development policy making of the nation. Abstract of the papers presented in the seminar will be published in abstract volume. Efforts will be made to publish some peer-reviewed papers in the seminar proceeding volume or in some National Journals. CALL FOR PAPERS Members of the Organizing Committee cordially invite the researchers and research scholars and senior students all over India to actively take part in this National Seminar by contributing papers/abstracts in one or more of the following areas for presentation and discussions thereafter. THEMES COVERED Tectonomagmatism and evolution of earth Understanding earth processes by geochemical approach Modern day environmental issues and strategies Water resources, policies and management Remote Sensing and GIS applications Natural Disasters – Mitigation and management Geoconservation ABOUT ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a public central university located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. ABOUT DEPARMENT OF GEOLOGY The teaching of Geology was initiated in the Aligarh Muslim University at the undergraduate level in 1946. The Post-graduate teaching started in 1951 during the First Five Year Plan. The Department of Geology acquired its own building in 1961. The first Coal petrology lab in India was established at the department. The foundation stone of the current building of department of Geology' was laid down by Dr. D.N. Wadia, the then Geological Adviser of The Government of India, on the 5th day of February, 1957. The department has produced 04 D. Sc., 138 Ph.D. and 149 M. Phil degrees. The Department of Geology has been active in scientific deliberations and interactions and hosted a number of National and International Conferences and Lectures by eminent National and International Geoscientists. Thrust areas of research of the department include Geochemistry, Sedimentology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Geology, Remote Sensing and GIS Applications and Micropaleotology. The Department offers courses of B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. (Applied Geology), P.G. Diploma in Hydrogeology, M.Phil and Ph.D. The Department of Geology has the distinction of providing leadership in area of Sedimentology in India, and in recognition to this, the Indian Association of Sedimentologists has established its Headquarters in the Department of Geology. The U.G.C. has also recognized the contribution of the Geology Department in Sedimentology and Environmental Geology. In recognition to which D.S.A. in Sedimentology and Environmental Geology was sanctioned in 1992. The successful completion of D.S.A. Phase-I of the Department led to its extension as D.S.A. Phase-II and subsequently the Department was also selected for COSIST assistance for the development of its infrastructure. The University Grants Commissions has sanctioned a DRS-I (SAP) to the Department of Geology for 2010-2015 period for the upliftment of teaching and research under the following thrust areas: a) Petrology/Geochemistry b) Environmental Geology 2 ABSTRACTS Abstracts not exceeding 500 words on any one of the above mentioned themes should be sent to the Convener on or before November 10, 2014.
