What does the Open Finland Challenge 2015
tell us about the state of open data in Finland?
Open Finland Challenge
In a nutshell
Digital innovation contest since 2009 - previously
under the name Apps4Finland.
The contest has spawned tens of startups,
hundreds of competition entries,, and an open
data ecosystem of thousands of people.
Possibly the largest “digital openness” and “open
data” -themed innovation contest in the Nordics.

How did it go – thoughts on implementation

Developer events in over 10 cities – including
”new ones” like Hämeenlinna, Lappeenranta,
Lahti, Kuopio
Well over 20 events total
Much collaboration with Ultrahack
Some technical difficulties…
Collaboration with the 6Aika cities – great, some
”dissonance” with competition formats
Open Finland Challenge
How did it go – thoughts on results so far
• The highest amount of entries ever!
• More mature entries than ever!
• In many cases, open data becoming
”business as usual”
• Do not yet know about geographical
spread – the Oulu, Tampere, Turku
competition figures slightly lower than
expected
• Look forward to feedback!
Open Finland Challenge
So what?
• Look forward to developing some of
these works further
• Collaboration opportunities with partners
• Funding and business development
opportunities like 6Aika
