Shoe
Box Appeal Christmas 2014
This story
begins with a simple cardboard shoebox on an incredible journey from the
Emerald Isle of Ireland to the Kingdom of Swaziland. Most likely you've filled
one up yourself in school over the years, stuffing the flimsy thing with all
sorts of little treats and daily essentials like toothbrushes, socks, hats,
scarves, undies, soap and other goodies. You knew you were sending it to a
youngster in the developing world, ticking the 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 Boy or Girl
sticker without much thought. It's impossible not to feel disconnected; after
all, you have no idea who is on the receiving end or where in the world your
shoebox might end up. Well let me tell you what a difference such a simple gesture
makes. I've seen it with my own eyes over the last week, having spent a couple
of days in Swaziland, South Africa bringing smiles to hundreds of children in
some of the most remote places on earth. This year Team Hope delivered 17,000
shoeboxes to the Kingdom alone, and believe me when I say it, you can easily
triple the figure in terms of the number of smiles put on faces. For more
