GLENCORRIB COMMUNITY CENTRE – DOWN MEMORY LANE
Minutes of the 3rd meeting that was held on Wednesday 27th October 1976 continued.
Fr. O’Connor suggested that we take note of the ladies committee. He then outlined
the achievements and what they had planned for the future.
A suggestion from the floor that the plan be altered. Didn’t take details of it except to
note that galvanise be used instead of
slates, 4ft high stage and upstairs not to be used. This was intended to save money.
Views for and against it were aired. No details noted except to day that it would be
discussed at Sunday’s meeting. Discussion followed and the type of toilets to be
installed and method of installation. Decided to follow the plans. Reverting to the
discussion on saving money on building. Fr. O’Connor said he would visit as many
others halls as possible and see what height their stages were. The meeting concluded.
Minutes of the 4th meeting that was held on Sunday 31st October 1976.
Meeting began with Fr. O’Connor reading the draft of the letter prepared by the ladies committee
which will be sent to emigrants from the community. The letter to be
signed by officers of both the men and ladies committees. He then outlined how
the concept of the centre was first thought up and how a general meeting was called.
Engineer approached to draw up a plan and how the county council gave planning
permission for that specific plan only. As a result of the suggestion to alter the plan
after the last meeting, members of the organising committee approached the engineer with an
alternative plan of the roof structure. This proposal was that the roof would be the
same height from the end wall of the new building to the back wall of the stage.
And in reply to the question about the height of the stage, Fr. O’Connor visited 8
centres which had a stage and found that only one of those had a stage over 3 foot in
height. He then put this proposal to the chair, in turn this was put to the committee.
It was seconded by Tom Mohan. An undertaking by all that, that was the end of that particular
discussion and no other discussions in regard to major alterations in the
plans.
A word of thanks passed on to the people who had made trojan efforts to date in
laying the foundation and that great progress had been made in some areas.
Noted that foundation laid right up to the damp course. Next step involves knocking
of gable of old school. This going to be a major job.
