Preface by Mayor Ib
Kristensen
In Billund Municipality we have been looking very much forward to
welcoming all of you to Musik i Tide Festival 2015.
We have been working hard to create some perfect settings. The
concerts will take place in Grindsted around our Sports and Cultural
Center - MAGION and in Billund – Capital of Children.
Play, learning and creativity are key words in the shared vision of
Billund being the Capital of Children, which the LEGO Foundation and
Billund Municipality now has worked on for the past three years.
With Live Musik i Tide Festival in Billund, we have a unique opportunity to offer our children everything at once.
And we have done more than that: prior to the festival, more than
4,000 children in the municipality have participated in the project
Billund Builds Music. A project based on student driven learning
where children build musical instruments; a major research project
with children and music, facilitated by the LEGO Foundation and Tufts
University, Boston.
The largest music festival in Europe and Billund Builds Music are
two amazing events that perfectly match the Capital of Children vision.
I welcome all of you to Billund Municipality and I hope you will
enjoy three fantastic days.
Ib Kristensen
Mayor

Music generates ...
Music generates happiness. Music brings people together. Music
inspires reflection and depth. Music, in that manner, is a language
that influences a great deal in our lives, and it is therefore important to be introduced to this language and learn it – the earlier the
better.
School concerts bring a multitude of music-expression into the
school (day) and opens up new horizons, creativity, inspiration and
learning. Musik I Tide Festival offers plenty of such examples, and
from LMS we would like to thank the Billund Municipality for the
excellent cooperation we have had making this festival a reality.
Have a great and musical festival!
Ebbe Høyrup
CEO

Musik i Tide Festival 2015
- why and how ...
Musik i Tide (Music in time) Festival is Europe’s largest forum for professional school concerts, and it is organised by the national competence centre LMS - Live Music in Schools.
In 2015, Musik i Tide Festival will take place in cooperation with
Billund Municipality.
All LMS contacts, musicians, local school classes together with a
number of national and international professionals, children’s culture
consultants and politicians are invited to the festival. In addition to
a packed musical program, the festival offers seminars, a stage for
school concerts in progress and low-key meals where participants can
get professional input, maintain network and make new contacts.
Local and international outlook
In 2015, the festival will be marked by an extra large local commitment arising out of the Billund Municipality title Capital of Children. To
emphasize the responsibility the title implies, Billund Municipality and
LMS will make sure that every one of the approximately 4000 school
children of the municipality will attend concerts on both festival days.
As a new festival feature, all municipal kindergarten children will similarly get a concert experience. Furthermore, several classes from the
youth education schools are invited to attend a concert.
Aside from meeting the many children and young people in the
streets and concert facilities, festival-goers and townspeople will also
be introduced to a major international research project launched by,
Children’s Capital as a run up to the festival. The project will culminate
during the festival with lectures by the team of researchers behind and
performances by the many participating children. The hope is that the
results of the project can help promoting the appreciation of music
and creativity in primary schools and in children’s lives in general.
6
Musik i Tide Festival 2015 –
also for the youngest
At this year’s Musik i Tide Festival in Billund all children will
take part - even the very youngest.
Not only the school children will enjoy the music in Billund
Municipality. In cooperation with LMS, We have succeeded in arranging a program that allows every school and
pre-school child, down to the age of one, to participate and
experience concerts to participate experience concerts by
professional artists from LMS.
According to the Danish Ministry of Culture Strategy for
Children and Young People, it is of vital importance to experience professional art and music, and it is emphasized
that art and culture should be a part of children and
young people’s lives from a very early age.
Billund Municipality is working to create conditions for children in day care and kindergartens
inspired by the concept of the “Open
School” as we know it from the new
Danish school reform.
In Billund we call it “Open day
care”, the intention being that all children meet art and culture early in life.
Therefore it makes perfect sense
that all young children get the opportunity to experience music at Musik i
Tide Festival 2015.
The concert program for the younger children consists of primary education concert productions and artists from
the LMS Chameleon Concert program
(family concerts).
7
Blackboard Music Project
Musik i Tide Festival 2015 is part of the Blackboard Music Project, an international development and exchange project aimed at
increasing the quality and quantity of concerts for Young Audiences
in Europe.
The project is a cooperation between nine different partner
organisations - all members of Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) - represented in eight European countries. Live Music in
Schools (LMS) coordinates and runs the project.
A delegation of partner representatives from around Europe are
in Billund to experience what LMS and Danish school concerts have
to offer and to meet and exchange ideas and inspiration. Additionally, Musik i Tide Festival 2015 presents several international
productions including one from project partner,
Jeunesses Musicales Macedonia.
The Blackboard Music Project
was launched in November 2014
and encompasses three YAM
Sessions (the annual Young
Audiences Music event that
include a producers’ forum,
8
the YAMAwards, keynotes, talks
and live international showcases)
along with a range of national
showcases around Europe until
the end of 2016.
The overall aim of the project
/youngaudiencesmusic
activities is to strengthen the
international network, to share
expertise and knowledge and to
promote the international exchange
of school concerts.
All of the experience and information
gained during the project will be assembled in a Digital
Toolkit featuring best practices, training videos, interviews,
work models, articles and more to be embedded in the
project website www.yamspace.org
For more information on the Blackboard Music Project,
please contact Dorthe Damgaard at Live Music in Schools

Capital of Children
Billund is the Capital of Children. Here, children learn through play and are creative citizens of the world.
The vision - to make Billund a national and international hub for
children, creativity, play and learning – is fostered by Billund Municipality and the LEGO Foundation.
The common dream is to attract companies, researchers and
others engaging in children and child development, learning and creativity, and to realize the activities and projects that contribute
to making Billund an even more attractive place to live.
Billund Builds Music and the Musik i Tide Festival
are both examples of activities that are fully in line
with the thinking behind the Capital of Children
vision.

Billund Builds Music
An education and research project in the Capital of Children
The entire week leading up to the Musik i Tide Festival has been filled
with music, singing and sound in schools, daycares and kindergartens
across Billund Municipality. Around 4,000 children and youth aged
0-16 and hundreds of teachers, kindergarten staff and childminders
have taken part in Billund Builds Music – an education and research
project centered on music engineering and children’s learning. During
the week, the children have built their own instruments out of regular
materials such as cardboard, cans and rubber bands. They have composed pieces of music, played and performed for each other, and now
their instruments and compositions can be experienced at the festival.
In addition to being a fun project-based education project, Billund
Builds Music has also had another important purpose. A research
team from the US Tufts University’s Center for Engineering, Education
and Outreach has followed the project, the children’s development
and the teachers’ experiences closely. Through case studies and surveys, the team will be evaluating which effect student-driven learning
has on students’ motivation, creativity, problem solving abilities and
collaboration skills. The results will be published in a report at the end
of the year.

Meet the coming school concerts
Meet the coming school concerts. On the stage ’Musik på Vej’/’Music
on the road’ two music groups get the chance to briefly introduce their
coming school concert still under production. In the music program
for season 2015-16, LMS, as always, presents a number of exciting
new productions, and a small selection of them can be experienced
on the showcase stage Musik på Vej. The other productions/concerts
presented at the festival are all thoroughly worked through in collaboration with an LMS producer, but on the Musik på Vej stage, you
can meet professional music groups who are still working with the
concert form, and have yet to prove their worth on the school scenes
around the country. The groups’ presentations will be a mix of music
and dialogue with the audience, and you will also be introduced to the
thoughts of the group’s LMS producer. Each presentation lasts about
10 minutes, plus 10-15 minutes of dialogue.

Presentation of Billund Builds Music by
Chris Rogers followed by a little surprise
Chris Rogers, professor of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University
(www.tufts.edu/~crogers), has worked with LEGO Education since
the late 90’s, specifically in research on how children learn, and he
has used this research to develop new learning toolsets. He has also
worked with Steinway pianos, Bach trumpets, Powell flutes, and a
number of other musical instrument companies on the design and
performance of musical instruments.
Chris Rogers’ will talk about how the human brain learns to engineer, and how we can leverage this knowledge to improve learning in
the classroom. He will also show movie clips illustrating what children
from around the world can create when they get the opportunity to
conduct their own learning.

Workshop:
CreativityClash
In the new Danish school reform of 2014, creativity has been enrolled
as a common goal for all course subjects. But how do we define
creativity, and how can we best implement and cultivate it in the
class room? These questions will be used as the point of departure
for a workshop which mixes academic research-based knowledge in
psychology with jazz and freestyle rap in an innovative communication concept.
Participants will receive:
• A research-based, theory-driven
understanding of creativity.
• Inspiration and concrete tools to
promote creative thinking in themselves as well as in others
• An artistic and musical experience.
The workshop is conducted by Psychologists and Musicians, Mads
Korsgaard and Anders Ørbaek, and
will be visited by renowned and
critically acclaimed freestyle rapper,
Pede B.

New Danish folk music meets Chinese folk
music at Farewell Concert
To end the festival in style, LMS has invited a new and completely
unique setup, which LMS are proud to introduce as part of the coming
season: Danish folk group Phønix and Chinese guzheng virtuoso
Sangka. In October last year Phønix, accompanied by LMS, had the
opportunity to go to China to play school concerts and introduce
Danish children’s culture. During their stay, Phønix was coupled with
Chinese Sangka, who plays the traditional Chinese guzheng. The
guzheng, with its dreamy harp-like sound, plays beautifully against
Phønix’ energetic grooves, and this exciting cultural encounter between two very different musical traditions have created a new and
exclusive sound: a breathtaking concert with emphasis on energy and
presence in the music.
We look forward to presenting this unique music experience to you
and unveil the details of the Musik I Tide Showcase 2016 and Musik i
Tide Festival 2017.
