Objective: Define and understand the
differences between hypnosis and
meditation. Determine how hypnosis
relates to consciousness
Warm Up – Take out a piece of paper
and write what you think hypnosis is.
Hypnosis, Biofeedback, and
Meditation
p. 191 – 195
1. Describe hypnosis. How does it work? (Do not just
copy the definition! Look at the example given on
page 192.)
2. What are the three theories of Hypnosis?
3. What is a posthypnotic suggestion?
4. What is biofeedback and what medical conditions
can it help?
5. What is meditation and how does it differ from
hypnotism?
Describe hypnosis. How does it work?
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness
resulting from a narrowed focus of attention,
accompanied by a heightened suggestibility
You are NOT asleep!
You are highly focused on internal and
external stimuli, and can focus attention on
one thing in particular, ignoring all others.
What are the three theories of Hypnosis?
It is simply a result of suggestibility (Barber)
Consciousness becomes separated allowing
the hypnotized person to accept what they
are told. But part of the personality watches
and reports to self – neodissociation theory
(Hilgard)
People behave as they do because they have
accepted their role – importance of
suggestability and hypnotic induction (Sarbin
& Coe)
What is a posthypnotic suggestion?
Things that the hynotist may have the
participant remember of forget
What is biofeedback and what
medical conditions can it help?
A process by which a person can learn
to control his internal physiological
processes with the help of feedback –
light turns on when heart rate goes too
high
Headaches, pain control
What is meditation and how does it
differ from hypnotism?
Focusing ones attention to clear ones
mind and produce relaxation
Meditation is focused on relaxation and
clearing the mind while in hypnosis your
senses are heightened so you may
focus more intently on them
Let’s try it
Read article on Self-hypnosis
There are 3 stations to try
Computer – how easily can you fall into a
trance?
P. 194 in book – Can you hypnotize
yourself?
P. 195 – Try it and report back on
Tuesday!
