BAADFARTEN IN BRIEF
(the Lake Steamers)
Baadfarten on the four lakes: Lyngby Sø,
Bagsværd Sø, Furesøen and Vejlesø, started
sailing in the early 1890s and have been in service
on the lakes ever since.
The first steamboats were put into regular service
in 1894. An old tug got the name Svanen (the
Swan) and was assigned to the route Farum–
Frederiksdal. It was not exactly a white swan with
its traction engine “adorning” the fore body with
a tall funnel that had to be lowered when passing
under the bridges, which meant that people had
their nice Sunday best ruined by soot and
smoke. The Swan was later downgraded to tug
for the barges plying the lakes in those days.
It also lost its name and was renamed Hjælperen.
Even today two of the boats from the 19th century
sail our lakes and our canals. They are “Prins
Christian”, built in 1896 and “Prinsesse
Alexandrine” from 1895. They have been propelled by steam, petrol, gas-generators, now
powered by diesel. “Prinsesse Alexandrine”, originally named “Sjølund” was renamed when the
young prince Christian X was married in 1898 and
settled in Sorgenfri Slot. Today the three lakeside
municipalities, Lyngby-Taarbæk, Gladsaxe and
Furesø own the Baadfarten. And the Baadfarten
has six motor-boats these days, of which four ply
Lyngby Lake, Bagsværd Lake and Mølleåen, the
others service Furesøen and Vejlesø.
CHARTER TRIPS
Have you anything to celebrate, like a birthday, confirmation, wedding, silver wedding, family picnics, a
happy divorce, or do you have anything else in
mind, then contact us and let us work something
out together to fit in with your special requirements.
On charter trips it is up to you where you wish to
be picked up and set down, choose from above
mentioned jetties. On lake Furesø, if you charter,
you can also call at the Jægerhuset restaurant and
at Holte station on lake Vejlesø.
The boats can be chartered for a minimum of 1
hour, preferably more, at a time.
The charter capacity on the Lyngby-Bagsværd lake
from 8 am to 7 pm is 99 passengers. After 7 pm until
sundown up to 219 passengers according to destination, personnel and available boats.
The charter capacity on Furesø from 8 am to 6 pm
is 80 passengers save on Sundays and holidays.

payable for each boat. You are welcome to enjoy
your packed lunch and drinks on the charter trips. If
you do not feel like organising a big feast onboard,
the answer is to make an arrangement with one of
the many local eating places, as - curiously enough
- practically all the jetties of the “Baadfarten” are
close to restaurants or snackeries.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS
During the season Bådfarten features various
special arrangements. During the last many
years we have, for instance, had ”The Floating
Theatre”, just like this year. See more about the

REGULAR SERVICE
Baadfarten operates a regular service on 4 routes.
The routes Lyngby – Bagsværd and Lyngby –
Frederiksdal sail on Saturdays, Sundays and public
holidays from the first weekend in May to the last
weekend in September as well as weekdays from
end May to the end of August. On the route Lyngby
– Bagsværd we call at Nybro Kro, Sophienholm,
Bagsværdvej, Aldershvile Slotspavillon and the
Regatta Pavillon. The return trip to Lyngby is via
Sophienholm and Nybro Kro. On the route
Lyngby – Frederiksdal the boat calls at Nybro Kro
and after turning round at the lock at Frederiksdal
it returns along the same route to Lyngby.
On public holidays from the first public holiday in
May to the last Sunday in September we sail our
2 routes on the Furesø. From Frederiksdal via
Kollekolle to Furesøbad as well as from Holte via
Jægerhuset and Birkerød to Furesøbad.
Both routes return along the same way. All 4 routes
have a saling time of about 30 minutes each way.
The routes Lyngby – Frederiksdal, Frederiksdal –
Furesøbad and Furesøbad – Holte correspond.

LYNGBY
Here at the canal are to be found the office of
Baadfarten, on Sorgenfrivej, and the associated jetties.
All the lake “steamers” on the Lyngby and Bagsværd
lakes start and return here. Tickets are obtainable on
board. The office is open every day in the sailing season apart from Mondays, when no schedule operates.
old stately mansion. Further along the Kongevej we find the
large Frilandsmuseum open air grounds with old farmhouses
from all parts of Denmark. Immediately adjacent to find Bjørn
Wiinblad “The Blue House”. The National Museum has its
own collections close by in old Brede. There are a number of
buses and good train connections to and from Lyngby.
Today’s Lyngby has a big cultural centre with
cinemas and lots of shops in the high street, the
station parade and the mall where all service
facilities of a modern town can be found.
The Bondeby (farmers’ village) is well worth a
visit. Here the old farmsteads and buildings have
been renovated and stand as they stood in their
original setting. Just as you leave the fortress
channel for Lyngby Lake you have the charming
little eating place, Havnehytten.
Friboeshvile, where Lyngby-Taarbæk town history
museum is housed, lies just north of the jetty, in an

After sailing across the Lyngby Sø you enter the
canal at Nybro. Here the fairway divides. Straight
ahead, way above the water, stands a beautiful
white mansion, Marienborg. In 1962 the barrister,
Mr. C. L. David, bequeathed the property and the
park that went with it to the Danish nation.
The lovely old mansion is today used by prominent guests of the government and for important meetings and also as a weekend residence
for the Prime Minister.

Just short of the bridge by Nybrovej are the
kajak- and canoo clubs and Nybro boat hire.
A much favoured place for excursions, where
you also find a kiosk on the boat hire premises
that caters to the many trippers and their needs
for snacks and drinks.
Close by is Nybro Kro (inn), a nice whitewashed
house, open all year. There is also a minor canooand kajak yard, where the old woodwork craft traditions are still being cherished.
Restaurant Nybro kro
of green lawn with old solitary trees is today owned
by the municipality of Lyngby-Taarbæk.
Sophienholm was also in the last century the
home of cultural activities, where the aesthetes of
their day used to meet in the house of the
merchant, Constantin Brun, married to the writer
Frederikke Brun. Other visitors were Oehlenschläger, Baggesen, Heiberg, Hans Christian
Andersen, Kuhlau and B. S. Ingemann.
Today Sophienholm is one of the municipal exhibition sites for changing cultural and art exhibitions.
In the summer concerts and entertainment for children as well as grownups are organised in the park.
Part of the main building is a pleasant cafeteria
where many visitors relax during the excursion.
The place also offers facilities for functions. It is
truly lovely and many people take a break here
from their sailing trip unwinding before setting
out again across the lake (PS: In the wing is the
famous Cobra-ceiling, which among others
Asger Jorn and Carl-Henning Pedersen have
been painting).

SOPHIENHOLM
BAGSVÆRD
Once under the bridge Bagsværd Sø spreads out
before you. To the North the big old villas, like
Tusculum, Søro and Christianelyst.
Shortly after that a large park appears with
Sophienholm in white palatial style placed at the
very top of the rise. This magnificent country house
with its greenhouses, rosegardens, wide expanses
The boat is now crossing Bagsværd Sø bound for
our jetty Bagsværdvej, near the Aldershvile
Planteskole. From there it sails back towards
Aldershvile Slotspavillon, situated in the municipality of Gladsaxe, now co-owner of the Lake
Steamers (“Baadfarten”). On this side too we find
a lovely lakeside with woodland and open spaces.

In the summer there are always many activities
to liven up the lake. Since way back big regattas and boatraces have been held on the lake,
with the finish just by the rowing stadium and
the Regatta Pavillon.
FARUM
In 1917 the merchant, C. Olesen, had a summer
residence built -Aldershvile Slotspavillon- where the lake
steamer jetty is to be found immediately below it. From
here there are only a few steps up to this pretty wooden
building now performing as assembly- and meeting
rooms and housing a restaurant with an open air terrace
overlooking the lake. It is also one of the few places where
you can still play skittles in an oldfashioned skittle alley.
The castle ruin close by is best known from the
days of “the Countess of Bagsværd”, who lived
here from 1901 until the castle got burnt down in
June 1909 when many valuable things perished in
the fire. Today, the 22 acre park is known as the
people's park, and is owned by Gladsaxe.

Restaurant Regatta Pavillon is a well known
dining-out place where you will not miss out if
you want to enjoy a really excellent lunch or dinner. This is where business people meet for a
meal or where family parties are held etc. In
summer you can sit on the open terrace with
your beer or coffee enjoying the view of the lake
right across to the wooded banks sloping down
to Frederiksdal.
From here the boats go to Sophienholm to pick up
passengers for the return journey to Nybro and
Lyngby.

FREDERIKSDAL
Frederiksdal is a highly popular destination for
trippers north of Copenhagen. Since the start of
Baadfarten 100 years ago our boats have been
sailing from Lyngby to Frederiksdal every day in
the summer. Frederiksdal has been a settlement
as long back as pre-historic times.
In the Middle Ages the bishops of Roskilde built
an impressive stronghold here -Hjortholm castleat the present Frederiksdal, where some of the
moat can still be discerned. Immediately to the
north of that is the big open air swimming pool of
Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality.
In the middle of the nineteenth century people
started getting a taste for nature rambles to
woods and lakesides. Already then there were
boats taking to the lakes. Boats that could
take up to 12-15 persons. The boats were rowed
by some stout oarsmen using both oars and footpaddles with side bucket-wheels of a sort, in
reality the first paddleboats. Today Frederiksdal

by the canal is a favourite place for summer activities. You can hire canoos and rowing boats, at
the canal as well as on the Furesø lake, there are
icecream booths, and towering opposite Hotel
Frederiksdal, the beer-garden “Den Gamle Have”
with an excellent view over the canal. In the “garden” you can sit inside as well as outside and
enjoy your picnic meal in the lovely greenhouses,
where Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality runs its own
nursery garden growing plants and flowers used
for decorating parks, streets and squares.

VÆRLØSE
Værløse lies adjacent to the southern part of Furesø
Lake with a sizeable shoreline and large wood with,
among other things, KolleKolle, the course centre with
its jetty and parking place close to the wood.
Just near the centre of Værløse town, abt. 2 km from
the KolleKolle jetty, is Mosegaarden, Skovgaards
Allé 37. In this museum are abundant collections
dating right back to prehistor-historic Denmark. For

Skovhuset, another cultural initiative taken by the
municipality, is situated in Værløse, Ballerupvej 60.
Here you will find an exhibition and an activityworkshop with drawing boards and a graphical
workshop where all are welcome. This is run by a
supporters’ club. For further information look at:

Here is a spot with beautiful scenery unique to a place
so close to Copenhagen. You also find the thousand
year old oak, Kongeegen (the King’s oak). In a number
of places there are pull-ins with campfire sites more
often than not used by the boating people. You can
walk from Frederiksdal along the shores of the lake, up
and down the hills - enjoying the splendid view of the
Furesø lake and the large beeches mirrored in the
reedy lake. A real sight for nature lovers.
FARUM
If you continue along the path you arrive at the charming
yachting harbour, Furesøbad. Here you find the jetty
from where you sail to Holte and Frederiksdal, and from
where there is onward connection to Lyngby. Here north
of Furesøbad there is a big fine beach with sand and
good bathing facilities as well as the “Nature School”.
There is also a well-stocked kiosk with icecream,
cordials, hotdogs etc. If larger meals are required we
recommend the marina Furesøbad with its big restaurant and open terrace overlooking the lake. Further
north you reach Farum municipality doing its part to
keep the lake steamers afloat. Down pretty paths along
the brook connecting Farum lake with the Furesø you
eventually reach the boat hire people on the Farum lake.
They will sell you fishing licences. From there it is no
distance to Copenhagen with its S-trains and buses.

BIRKERØD
HOLTE
The tour continues to Birkerød. The place of call is
at the end of Plantagevej by the Birkerød Rowing
Club and Birkerød Sailing Club. From there you
can go for a lovely 21/2 kilometre-walk eastward
through Vaserne to Holte enjoying the bird life on
the way. If you head west you walk through natural
surroundings and residential neighbourhoods
to Farum.
From there we sail across the lake through the
canal to Vejlesø where the boat is moored directly
below Holte station, where you can also park and
catch buses for Hørsholm-Vedbæk-Skodsborg
and Gamle Holte. At the far end of Vejlesø lies
Holte Havn, a popular spot. People congregate
at Traktørstedet, where Baadfarten has a jetty.
JÆGERHUSET
From there you sail across Vejlesø and through
the canal to Furesø. It is possible to get on or off
at the restaurant Jægerhuset, a charming old
halftimbered house, lying 10 metres aloft
beautifully overlooking the Furesø (Storekalv).
Saturdays in Juli Jægerhuset and Baadfarten
offers an arrangement with grill party and sailing,
