Social Services) Learning Disabilities Nursing • You will make a specialised contribution to the lives of people with learning disabilities across the age spectrum & in a range of settings • You will assist individuals with all aspects of their lives (eg health, social, employment) to enable them to achieve optimum health and social wellbeing • Support children, adults and older people with complex needs (eg autism, challenging behaviour, multiple disabilities, mental health problems & dementia) • Lead improvements in both specialist and mainstream services for people with learning disabilities & their families/carers Qualities of a Good Nurse....? • Caring & compassion • Interpersonal & Communication skills • Enjoy working with people • Able to empathise • Non-judgemental • Well organised • Academic ability • Willing to learn Academic Entry Requirements • Applicants must apply through UCAS • Minimum of 240 UCAS tariff points....OR • Equivalent qualifications (e.g. QAA-recognised Access Course) • Plus GCSE passes at grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics / equivalent qualifications (eg Level 2 Functional Skills in Communication and Numeracy) Other Requirements • Success at interview • Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Clearance • Satisfactory workplace risk assessment • Good references Bursaries • Non means tested Grant - £1000 per year • Means tested bursary • Non means tested Maintenance Loan • Final amount dependent on individual circumstances What will you study? • Range of modules undertaken each year • Year 1 – Focuses on development of fundamental knowledge & skills required to deliver quality patient care in all fields of nursing (care, compassion & communication, human development/functioning across the age continuum, decision-making, improving health & well being, professional nursing practice – mostly core modules) • Year 2 – Focuses on field of nursing practice.
