Letter from the Director
Peggy McNamara
By the time you read this, our annual Valley of the Moon Fundraising Auction and Dinner
will have been held; we’ll be sure to give you an update on the outcome of that next month. Of course,
we couldn’t hold that event without the help of all the volunteers, sponsors, donors and attendees. We
will be doing a proper thank you after the event, but for now, a general thank you to all is in order.
A few updates:
The September 27th Steak Dinner had a total attendance of 130 people and we raised a little over
$2300 that evening. I certainly enjoyed my first steak dinner as Director, and look forward to
many more. Thank you to everyone who attended and of course, a HUGE thank you goes out to
Midge Pharmer, and family, for putting the dinner on for us and all the volunteers who had a
hand in making it a fun evening for all. And, one more thank you goes out to our sponsor for
that evening, Ray and Tova Burhen. Round of applause to all!
If you haven’t made your way upstairs of late, our lending library has moved to the hallway that
leads to the Great Room. It has been fun to see the increased interest and activity with our
books and movies out in the open for all to see. A men’s group from Redemption Church installed the shelving, Joanne Decker is the one responsible for moving the books and keeping it
all organized and Geary Smith and Bob Gilbertson helped to finish off a couple of the bookshelf
units, too. It is endearing to see how the community steps up to help this center be the amazing
place it is.
You may have also heard a bit about the potential sale of the Snoqualmie Valley Hospital to Overlake. If there is a sale, it may impact our nursing staff for the ADH program; currently, our two
nurses are funded by Snoqualmie Valley Hospital, which amounts to approximately $60,000 per
year. We are working to proactively keep that support in place and at the same time, explore other funding options.
There is a task force that has been formed to dig into getting hard data on what our current relationship with Senior Services brings to the entity as well as learning what it would take to be independent of them, if and when that option arises. It is hard to say what the outcome of this exploration will be but we will be sure to keep you informed along the way.
In addition to all that, I appreciate your support through the staff changes that are being made in the
administrative offices of the Sno-Valley Senior Center. Change is hard. Change is even more difficult in
non-profits that have caring individuals involved. Back-to-back deficits require us to do things differently. It is an honor to serve you, and the community at large, in this capacity as Director. Thank you
for the trust.
In Gratitude,
Peggy L. McNamara

Weather Watch
Warnings & Closures
It was a lovely summer, but Fall is definitely here
and winter is close on her heels! Here are a few
tips to make sure you stay safe and prepared for
the weather adventures ahead.
Note from our director:
Sno-Valley Senior Center
now has a chaplain,
Karl Heitman, available
to serve the needs of our
community. Read below
for a brief introduction.
Greetings! My name is Karl Heitman and I am the
Senior Pastor of Carnation Bible Church since June
2014. I have served as an Assistant Pastor, Sunday
School Teacher, Adult Bible Study Teacher and parttime Christian School Teacher prior to coming to
Carnation Bible Church. I have over 11 years of
military experience and I plan to be commissioned
to serve as a Chaplain in the US Air Force Reserves
this year.
If you’re online, check out takewinterbystorm.org
for great ideas and checklists. A few items they
suggest you have on hand: Water and food for
three days, flashlight, first aid kit, cash,
meds & pet supplies.
On stormy days, listen to local news reports for
school closures. The Senior Center will follow the recommendations for Riverview
School District. If they have a one-hour delay,
so will the Senior Center. A 1-hour delay means
no 8 a.m. fitness class. A 2-hour delay cancels
both morning fitness classes.
In 2011 I earned a Bachelor of Christian Ministry
degree from Wayland Baptist University in
Anchorage, Alaska and then a Master of Divinity
degree from The Master’s Seminary.
My wife Jennifer and I were married in 2006 and
together we have three beautiful children: David (7),
Annalise (5), and Jonathan Calvin (1). I look
forward to serving our small community by being
the Chaplain at the Sno-Valley Senior Center. I am
available for any who may develop any spiritual
needs. Please don't hesitate to call at 333.6436 or
write me at [email protected] should you
become in need of any pastoral care. Pastor Karl
A full-day closure means all
activities and lunch, will be
cancelled. You may call the
center for updates at
425-333-4152 or check the
webpage at
snovalleysenior.org
or check our Facebook page.
Keep in mind, if power is
down in some areas, we may
not be able to update
immediately. Stay warm!
Free Pet Food Available
through the
King County Humane Society.
If you are caring for cats or dogs in your household and you need assistance providing for their nutritional
needs, there is help available. The Senior Center has arranged for Pet Food Deliveries the second Monday
or Tuesday of the month. Del & Nancy Moore graciously volunteer their time to pick up and deliver the
bags of food that the Humane Society provides and bags up for us. This is a great service we’d like to keep
up. Please assist us by filling out a form with your needs and your financial statement, which may be verified by the Humane Society. Also, please sign out at the front desk when you come to pick up your items.
This helps us regulate the flow, and update your information. Please pick up your bags no later than Friday morning of the delivery week. We cannot store food on the premises for more than few days. For the
month of October, because we will be hosting our annual auction, please pick up your food by Thursday.
Thanks for your cooperation in keeping this program healthy and thriving for all who need it!
