The GVR Member Assistance
Program needs your support!
The GVR Members Assistance
Program (MAP) helps GVR members who are financially unable to
pay all or some of their dues. You
can help your friends and neighbors
by adding an extra $15 (or more) to
your annual dues payment.
The MAP program began in
1994 when GVR realized some
members were under financial
stress and unable to pay their dues.
It allows members to keep their accounts in good standing and prevents liens and additional fees to
be placed on their properties.
The MAP program gives members the opportunity to get back
on their feet after dealing with a
temporary or long term fi nancial
hardship, and allows them to continue participating at GVR facilities and activities.
Please consider giving $15 (or

be made with your dues payment

Horn of Plenty to Best Serve GVR ‘Haves’ and ‘Have Nots’
On May 13, 2014, GVR’s Planning
& Evaluation (P&E) Committee voted
unanimously to end the “kicking of the
can routine” with regard to an annual
list of GVR club requests that dealt with
distinct space issues and the potential
for poaching of space that comes with
it. These club requests usually involve
construction projects that are costly
and without coordinated planning to
address long-term needs. GVR’s Board
agreed, and on July 22nd, also voted
unanimously to support an architectural, engineering, & space planning
review to assess all GVR centers for
best utilization, and to revise and update center development plans. In the
spirit of the Thanksgiving Holiday, my
favorite holiday, this is something to be
thankful for.
What’s clear is that GVR must remain nimble and smart in meeting
member needs and interests. Though
the diversity of our membership’s interests and means may vary greatly, we
have so much more in common – property ownership, recreation and leisure
pursuits, expectations for success, and
the motivation to continue to build and
nurture a community of well-being.
The unanimous votes described earlier represent a forward thinking perspective and approach to governance
and management of our Corporation.
We all know that forward movement
requires the investment of hundreds
of hours of personal time from many
volunteer leaders. Fortunately, many
dedicated GVR volunteer leaders are
not only willing and enthusiastic about
putting in that
kind of time,
but they are
also dedicated
to engaging in
thoughtful and
comprehensive

tion in making smart, yet often difficult, choices
about its future.
Discussions that led to stop ‘kicking
the can routine’ reminded me of the title
of one of my favorite movies, ‘To Have
and Have Not’ (the film produced one
of the best and perhaps most provocative movie quotes of all time: ’You know
how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You
just put your lips together and blow.’).
At the end of the day, we find ourselves
in a community with a significant gap
between ‘Haves’ and ‘Have Nots.’ Only
conscientious and persistent effort will
close the gap.
A snapshot from the ‘Have Not’
viewpoint looks like this: 72 GVR club
requests were received for 2015 projects, at an estimated cost of $3 million,
though only a few will be funded in
2015 based on safety, urgency, or common sense criteria. These included
multiple requests from various clubs
for larger or additional space (La Tienda, Lapidary, Pickleball, Table Tennis,
and Tennis). GVR’s annual center assessments and miscellaneous requests
for 2015 identified an additional 478
capital projects at an estimated cost
of about $2 million just to keep things
safe and in good working order. Due
to funding limitations, only 123 of the
capital projects were approved, leaving 355 projects deferred.
There are many faces to our ‘Have
Nots’. Often displaced from one GVR
facility to another based on space
limitations, the Table Tennis Club has
referred to themselves as the ‘GVR
Homeless Club.’ During peak season,
530+ Pickleball Club members wait in
line to play on just seven GVR courts,
among the lowest number of courts
per player in active adult retirement
communities in the U.S. Another perplexing conundrum needing attention
is how to provide services and benefits
to GVR members in their golden years,
many of whom have ‘aged out’ of current GVR activities and live on limited
fi xed incomes. This is a double-edged
sword for these members: while access to GVR programs and services is
limited, fi nancial obligations remain.
In 2014, more than 450 people applied
for our Member Assistance Program
(MAP) for dues waiver, the largest
number of MAP applicants ever.
Fortunately, the Corporation is conscious of making smart choices about
its future. Opportunities and activities are in place to transfer more ‘Have

know, GVR’s Board of Directors adopted a comprehensive
financial reserve system that
funds depreciation in the annual budget and offers a financial failsafe for our most pressing needs. In addition, an architecture-engineering-space
planning review of GVR’s
facilities is underway through
the Facilities Assessment
Work Group. Work Group
objectives include assessing
all GVR centers for best utilization and revising and updating development plans for all
centers. Organizational steps
to create and launch the GVR
Foundation have been successful and will eventually provide
support through tax-deductible contributions for MAP
and other member programs.
The notion to adopt Green
Valley Council’s (GVC) boundary to GVR (with minor exceptions) is being researched and
discussed by GVR members
serving on the Growth Task
Force. The intent of this proposal is to provide GVR with
long-term financial resources
sufficient to meet current
and future member needs,
and leverage GVC’s community outreach and political
advocacy. After seeking input
from GVR members through
public forums, a proposal
will be conveyed to the Board
of Directors. Next January, a
GVR member ballot referendum will help determine the
boundary of the Corporation.
Regardless of where they stand
on the issue, Haves and Have
Nots should vote to make sure
their voices are heard.
Hopefully, one may conclude that GVR members, volunteer leaders, and staff have a
compelling future before them
with an abundance of opportunities to best serve GVR Haves
and Have Nots. We can be
sure that change will be upon
us whether we choose to stand
still or move forward. Embracing growing pains as opportunities for creative problem
solving will enable us to work
together to find solutions and
make smart choices to ensure
a vibrant community and compelling future for GVR. Perhaps the member referendum
will provide fodder for a sequel
to ‘To Have and Have Not’,
only this time in Green Valley,
not Martinique.

Volunteer Staff Coordinators Meeting,

Looking for Health and Happiness?
Become a GVR Pool or Fitness Center Volunteer
A number of recent surveys of those who volunteer reveal
that volunteering has made them feel physically healthier.
According to a United Healthcare survey, 41 percent of
Americans volunteered in the past year. Of the volunteers, 84
percent agreed that volunteering improves physical health,
and 95 percent agreed that volunteering also improves emotional health. Additionally, 96 percent of volunteers agreed
that volunteering makes people happier. Twenty-nine percent
of volunteers who suffer from a chronic condition say that volunteering has helped them manage a chronic illness.
Who knew volunteering could actually make a person
healthier?
At Green Valley Recreation, we realize that providing volunteer opportunities for our members is as good for them as
providing fitness centers, swimming pools, clubs, concerts
and classes! We make it even easier for members to reap the
benefits of volunteering with our volunteer flex program.
Volunteers may swim or work-out while on duty. They may
choose to commit to a specific day, time and place, or to opt
for a more flexible option of volunteering while they are doing
their work-out.
We have all kinds of fun activities for our volunteers, so join us!
To get started, we have a short volunteer training class on Wednesday, November 5, at 1 pm in the West Social Center Room 2. Free
refreshments will be served! Hope to see you there!

November 19
Volunteer Staff Coordinators act as a liaison between the
volunteers at their facilities and GVR’s Volunteer Supervisor.
It is lots of fun and not a lot of work! They help answer questions of those volunteers on a flex schedule. VSCs also keep
volunteers up to date with all the latest information needed to
help keep members safe while enjoying GVR facilities.
If you are interested in learning how much fun you can have
and how simple it is, please attend the meeting on Wednesday,

WATER AEROBICS!
Water Aerobics classes are FREE drop-in activities.
You need not register for the classes – just come and join in on all
the fun! Stop by and see what it’s all about!

the swimming pool to avoid confl icts with the start or conclusion
of water aerobics classes.

Please proceed directly to the meeting room listed above for the fi rst part of the orientation. Fitness orientations are conducted by Certified Personal Trainers. Orientations
start with a “Fitness Assessment,” that demonstrates how your personal fitness compares
to the national average for people in your age group. Afterwards, you will go to the fitness
room where trainers will demonstrate how to use equipment. Please wear appropriate
clothes and shoes. If you are not interested in participating in the introduction and only
want to learn how to use equipment, please arrive around 45 minutes after the beginning

11/12 Wednesday: Phoenix Musical Instrument
Museum Tour — We have had many requests to visit the
Musical Instrument Museum and we are happy to present this trip that offers three hours to discover this marvelous spot which covers 200,000 square feet and truly
celebrates the universal language of music by exhibiting instruments from every country in the world. The
MIM celebrates the contributions each and every country has made to musical heritage. On exhibit are approximately 5,000 instruments and with the use of the
most technologically advanced wireless headsets and
high-resolution video screens, you will be able to see
instruments, hear their sounds and observe them being
played in their original settings. We will enjoy a no-host
lunch in their restaurant and have free time to explore
the galleries. En route back to Green Valley we have a
stop planned at the Melting Pot for a chocolate fondue
treat! What a perfect way to end our day. Join us for this

11/19 Wednesday: Canyon Lake Boat Tour on the
Apache Trail — Today we will board our deluxe motorcoach and travel to Canyon Lake, which is located
north of Apache Junction. We’ll make a rest stop in
Florence. For lunch we travel to the Mining Camp
Restaurant. This eatery is full of western atmosphere
and the platters of food served to our group will make
your eyes pop. We then travel along the paved portion
of the Apache Trail. Tucked into the base of the Superstition Mountains is a beautiful man-made lake called
Canyon Lake. We board Dolly’s Steamboat and cruise
Canyon Lake as the captain narrates on the scenery,
geology and history of the area. Steep canyon walls ascend out of a crystal blue body of water. This makes
for a very enjoyable 1 hour cruise. We travel home today full of great memories of this wondrous part of the

2014-2015 GVR Live! Performing Arts Season. We encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance at any
open GVR Social Center. General public tickets purchases must be made at the West Service Center and Box

available at the door at the West Service Center and Box
Office, one hour prior to the event. Ticket prices increase
$1 at the door. Tickets are not available at the door for
sold out events. Members may purchase up to four guest
tickets per household at the guest price.
REFUNDS/EXCHANGES
There are no refunds for season, individual member, guest
or general public tickets. All sales are final.
GVR offers season ticket exchanges up to 24 hours prior
to an event. Season tickets may be exchanged for any other
performance in the performing arts series.

Grace Kelly

When it comes to singer/saxophonist/composer/lyricist/
arranger/producer/educator Grace Kelly, people marvel at
the proficiency, creativity and ever-accelerating growth of the
22-year-old virtuoso. Kelly is an ambitious young artist who
graduated from Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 2011 at
the age of 19. Since the age twelve, Grace has performed over
600 concerts as a leader all around the world at prominent
venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, Montreal Jazz Festival,
Newport Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the
Kennedy Center and the Apollo Theater. She has also released
eight full-length albums and performed with well-known artists such as Phil Woods, Dave Brubeck and Keith Lockhart.
Grace has also performed with Wynton Marsalis who praised
her talents. “Grace Kelly plays with intelligence, wit and feeling. She has a great amount of natural ability and the ability to
adapt that is the hallmark of a fi rst-class jazz musician.” Kelly’s
latest release, Live at Scullers, offers a set mostly composed
of new material which shows off her remarkable versatility.

Hugh Grinnell. Grinnell founded the fi rst Audubon Society,

Winner Of La Tienda Drawing
Esther Boston was the lucky winner of a beautiful decorated
gourd. Each month La Tienda Shop donates a drawing prize
crafted by one of its artisans. This month’s prize was designed
and crafted by Nancy Estes. Because Esther has lived in her
new house only four months and is still decorating, she was
especially pleased to win the attractive gourd and immediately
knew that she would put it on her new sofa table to show it
off to the best advantage. Esther and her husband moved from
San Jose, California to Green Valley, primarily to take advantage of the warm sunny weather. Esther has joined a book club
and hopes to take Italian and exercise classes in the near fu-
ture. She fi nds Green Valley a delightful place to live and looks
forward to having her three children and three grandchildren
come to visit and see her new home.
La Tienda Shop is located at GVR’s West Center. All items
are hand-crafted and reasonably priced. Shoppers will fi nd
a large selection of jewelry, photography, decorated gourds,
woven and hand-sewn pieces, children’s items, home decor,
ceramics, wooden bowls, and glass. The shop is open 9am to
4pm Monday through Friday and 10am to 2pm on Saturday.

Welcome back Snowbirds! Let’s dance! Please join us in
learning more about this sensuous style of dance and its intricate and intoxicating music. Our next Milonga (Argentine
Tango Social Dance) will be held on Saturday, November 8th,
at the Santa Rita Springs Anza Room. The ever popular Tango
Rosano will be providing both classic and modern tunes for
your dancing enjoyment. All GVR members and authorized
guests are invited to dance and/or enjoy the music. A free Tango lesson is available at 6:00 pm, dancing from 6:30 – 9:30.
The club sponsors free weekly Argentine Tango Practicas (informal tango dancing) on most Sundays from 3:00
– 5:30pm. Experience and a partner are not required. Free lessons in Argentine Tango Basics are provided by our members.
In the place of the November Argentine Tango classes, the
club is hosting a free practica for our members on Fridays from
6:00 - 7:30 pm at the Santa Rita Springs Anza Room. Singles,

The Billiards Club provides an opportunity for GVR members to participate in recreational billiard playing by arranging
competitive opportunities for all levels. This venue provides
an avenue for members to meet other individuals who enjoy
the game of billiards.
Dues to join for 2014 were $3 but for new members can pay
$4 for the balance of 2014 and all of 2015. Prior to joining
you may participate in one of the party pool events. Members
of the Club are put on an email distribution list to be advised
of upcoming events and tournaments. If you don’t have email
look for fl iers posted at the GVR centers. Applications can be
found at each of the billiards rooms or found under the document tab of the club’s website.

Midweek Progressive Bridge Club
On Thursday evenings at Desert Hills starting at 6:30pm, we
meet for Progressive (party) Bridge. You must have a partner and
be a GVR Member to join us. Five rounds are played, with each
round consisting of five hands. You start with your partner for
the first round and then change partners for the remaining four
rounds. Please arrive by 6:00pm and start playing at 6:30pm.
Each round takes approximately 30 minutes, and we usually end
by 9pm. If you are interested please call Cathy or Joe Musacchia

$2.00 per person per year and 50 cents per person per night.
Arts & Crafts Association
On November 5th, the Arts & Crafts Association Club
will meet at Desert Hills Auditorium at 1 pm. There will be a
Make-n-Take project; we will be decorating photo frames under the guidance of Carmen Nyland. Please bring your “Bling”
or whatever you wish to decorate with. Think, unmatched earrings, beads, fall and Christmas items, pearls, twine, wire, etc.

Bocce Club
The Bocce Club invites you to join our club at Canoa Hills
Recreation Center. It is an excellent activity for anyone whose
knees and shoulder can no longer take the rigors of tennis or
the golf swing. Anyone who has played pool or has bowled
can master the technique of bocce.
The courts have recently been poured with cement all
around the courts and pathways to make it safer to walk on.
The club has the courts reserved on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the mornings. The fall and winter season’s

The Canadian Club of Green Valley is holding their annual Fall
Picnic on Saturday, November 29th from 12-3 pm, at Santa Rita
Springs Recreation Centre, on the roof patio. All Canadians, who
are members of GVR are welcome to attend this event. Guests are
welcome, but a guest card will be required at the door. This is a potluck picnic so attendees are asked to bring their own plates, cutlery,

The Clay Studio of Green Valley is focused on providing an
opportunity for creative expression and a flexible work place
where members can come together to enjoy our hobbies in clay
and share our creative skills - a place that is both recreational and
educational and will enhance the quality of our members’ lives.
The Clay Studio is a hobby studio operating as an all volunteer organization. Our extensive facilities include a wheel
room, sculpture and handbuilding rooms, plus a large workspace for glazing and general work. We also do raku and horse
hair fi rings. An Introduction to the Clay Studio class through
the GVR catalogue is required for membership, and after that
we provide ongoing workshops. We have very helpful talented
members who share their expertise. Membership is $30 a year.
You can create almost anything in clay and new members are
always amazed at what they accomplish! Everyone has “artistic ability” when they play in clay!
Located in The Santa Rita Springs Center, the clay studio is
open seven days a week when a monitor is present. Stop by for a
tour and see the beautiful pieces that come out of our studio.
The Eastern States Club of Green Valley will kick off the new
season on Monday, November 10th at the Desert Hills Auditorium

Green Valley Duplicate Bridge Club
The Green Valley Duplicate Bridge Club is one of the oldest and largest clubs in GVR with more than 300 members.
The games are sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge
League (ACBL). Membership in ACBL is encouraged but not
mandatory. The club plays sanctioned bridge on Mondays,
Thursdays, and Fridays at 1:00 pm in the Canoa Hills Recreation Center. All GVR members are welcome to join. Club
membership is $1.00 per calendar year and the game fee is
usually $1.00 per person/$2.00 per pair. Entries must be purchased at least 5 minutes before the game begins.
Bridge lessons are available on scheduled dates for club members with some bridge experience. Lessons are free, but there is a
small charge for materials. Classes begin on the first Friday of October and again on the first Friday of February; classes last 8 weeks.

The Green Valley Forum Club meets every Wednesday to listen to presentations and programs that are mind-expanding,
informative, challenging and quite often just plain entertaining. Our meetings are held in the Desert Hills Social Center
Auditorium, 9:00am to 10:00am. No need for reservations or
tickets. Dues are $2.00 per year. You must be a GVR member
to attend.
•November 5: “Hiking Adventures in China” Bill Adamson,
Green Valley hiker and biker will share his experiences from
his recent hiking adventures in China. Highlights will include
the Great Wall of China, a sacred mountain, a hike down a
canyon and many other historic places.
•November 12: “Relief for Fibromyalgia” Dr. Trent Freeman will present the fourth of a Good Health series. Learn
what are some of the causes of this devastating disease and
also learn about some new techniques and treatments being
offered for relief.
•November 19: “The Andean Mountains of Ecuador” Doug
Moore, naturalist and nature illustrator/photographer will describe the marvels of Ecuador, home to one of the greatest bio
diversities on the earth. He will also show how the local people
work to conserve their land and live substantially with nature.
•November 26: “The O’odham Village of Wa:k (4000 BC
to 1756)” Craig Reid, training coordinator of the San Xavier
docents will do a presentation about the early history of the
O’odham village of Wa:k. The presentation will include the
village history through the Jesuit period of missionaries, before the construction of the Mission of San Xavier del Bac.
National Mah Jongg Club
Our club meets every Wednesday afternoon in the Fiesta
Room at Santa Rita Springs to play this unique, ancient Chinese
tile game. We play from 1pm to 4pm. You will need to have
knowledge of the game and have a current National Mah Jongg
League card. We would love for you to come and join us.
Green Valley Volleyball Club
Aerobic exercise, friendly competition, and camaraderie all
come together at the Volleyball Club of Green Valley. With three
venues to choose from and games six days of the week, volleyball players of Green Valley are never bored. Regular outdoor
volleyball is played on a sand court three mornings a week at 8
am. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings it is at the East Center
court. On Saturday mornings it is at Abrego South.
Wallyball (so named because the ball can be bounced off
the walls) is played in the Las Campanas racquetball court.
These games happen every weekday from 2 to 4pm and from
1 to 3pm on Saturdays. To participate court shoes are required
(sneakers that are worn only indoors, so sand or dirt doesn’t
scratch the floors).
Water volleyball is perhaps the most jovial of the three. A
net is strung across and teams try hard to keep the ball from
getting wet. Splashing around in the pool is a great way to stay
cool as the temperature heats up outdoors. Any GVR member
is welcome to try out one, or all three of the fun variations on
the game of volleyball.

Recreation Center. We are a group of Green Valley residents
who love to travel or just enjoy hearing about the adventures of
others. Each month our program consists of members showing
videos or slide shows of trips they have taken. We also share helpful travel tips that members have picked up during their journeys.
As a member you have the opportunity to show off your trip photos to an appreciative audience. We meet the 3rd Friday of each
month at 9:00am at Las Campanas Recreation Center.

lots of our club members in attendance to answer questions and
help you through the beginning steps. (We enjoy this party, too!)
Then you can decide if you want to take the GVR classes listed in the latest class catalog. They’ll be starting immediately
or in the next week, and you can read up on what’s being offered in advance of the party so you can ask questions there.
If you can’t make it to the party, check out the catalog and
try out the classes yourself. No partner necessary for square
dancing, but round dancing, like ballroom, is a couples’ activity. Just wear some non-sticky-soled shoes and casual clothes.

What could be more enjoyable on a lovely winter evening in
Green Valley than to gather with fellow Iowans and congratulate each other on escaping the frigid blasts of an Iowa winter?
Our monthly meetings, December through April, are a great
way to meet new friends and reminisce about “the corn state!”
We begin at 5:00 p.m. with a social hour, followed by dinner
and entertainment or a short program. Prepaid reservations
are a must and are due seven days before the meeting. GVR
membership or a GVR guest card is required. Annual dues
are $5.
Our upcoming December 3rd meeting will feature Christmas music by the amazing Mariachis Azteca Del Sol. Don’t

Welcome back to all our Michigan family. The Michigan
Club has put together an exciting year of dinners and entertainment. We can look forward to a whole array of diverse fun

The Michigan Club holds monthly meetings the first Wednesday of each month from November through April with reservations due the Friday before the meeting. All Michiganians who

The first meeting of the 2014/2015 season of the Pacific Northwest Club of Green Valley will be held Saturday, November 8, at the
Desert Hills Social Center at 5:00 PM. If you are a past or present
resident of Idaho, Oregon or Washington and a member in good
standing with GVR that is looking to meet new friends come and
join us. A-M bring a main dish to serve 6-8 and N-Z bring a salad or

Pickleball Club
Pickleball has been called the fastest-growing sport in North
American. It is a combination of badminton, ping-pong, and tennis. The court is about one-third the size of a tennis court. It has
grown tremendously recently due to the number of baby boomers who were once active and now can’t quite cover a tennis court.
It has grown because once you try it, you’re addicted. It is a game
you can actually play and enjoy from the very first day.
GVR pickleball courts are located at the East and Canoa Ranch
Centers. Want to learn? Join Intro to Pickleball this fall at East Center from 4 PM until dusk on Tuesday and Thursday. And/or, Beginners - Pickleball 101 - this Course consisting of three (3) lessons
from 1:30pm-5:00pm at East Center on February 2, 9, 16, 2015 for

If you’re looking for an inexpensive but enjoyable way to spend
an afternoon, this may be your answer. The Wright-Patterson
Mah Jongg Club meets every Tuesday from 12:30pm to 3:30pm

club encourages mixing of players by drawing for player tables just
