NOVEMBER 2014 - Snohomish County Bar News 3 From the Desk of the President Jennifer Rancourt As a law clerk for Judge Gerald Knight in 2000, I, like many of my colleagues, would dread the weeks Judge Knight was on Civil Motions. Civil Motions were a law clerk’s nightmare. The notable exception were Mondays when we got to witness one of the few happy events that occur in the courthouse; a building designed for people to come and settle their disputes. Mondays were adoption days. They were the days when families would be united. There were always tears of joy, kids getting their picture taken with the Judge, and lots of smiles. Mondays were the days that made the civil motions rotation bearable for law clerks. That same year, the National Adoption Day Coalition (Children’s Action Network, Freddi Mac Foundation and Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption) launched National Adoption Day to raise awareness about the 100,000 plus children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families and to celebrative adoptive families. The sponsors worked with law firms, foster care agencies, advocates, and the courts to complete hundreds of foster care adoptions. That year nine jurisdictions participated in the event across the country (New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Washington D.C., Omaha and Columbus). The event grew quickly to 17 jurisdictions in 2001 to approximately 400 in 2011. According to NationalAdoptionDay.org, the nationwide event has helped nearly 50,000 children move from foster care to a forever family by raising awareness, encouraging adoption, building a collaboration among local adoption agencies, courts and advocacy organizations and finalizing adoptions from foster care in all 50 states. This year, the group estimates that an additional 4,500 children in foster care nationwide will be adopted during the National Adoption Day celebrations. 2014 will mark the 10th Anniversary of Snohomish County’s participation in the national event. While National Adoption Day officially falls on the Saturday before Thanksgiving each year, ( November 22, this year) our court will be celebrating the day on Friday, November 21, 2014. The festivities are sponsored by 4 Snohomish County Bar News - NOVEMBER 2014 Snohomish County Superior Court and the Clerk’s office from 9 AM-Noon. Adoption proceedings will be open to the public and held from 9-10:30 AM. From 10:30-11 there will be a community celebration with light refreshments. Adoptions will resume at 11 AM. If you need a little reminder that the legal profession really does have a positive impact on the lives of some people, I encourage you to stop in for the festivities. There will no doubt be no shortage of smiles, laughs and happy tears; things that are often in short supply in the courthouse. My thanks to all who work so hard to put on this important event and my best wishes to all of the new families that will be united that day. ANnouncing NATIONAL ADOPTION DAY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2014 9 AM TO NOON (plus the afternoon, if needed) AS PART OF A NATION-WIDE ADOPTION CELEBRATION, the Snohomish County Superior Court and the Clerk’s Office are sponsoring a special adoption celebration on November 21. This is our TENTH year of participation in National Adoption Day. Snohomish County continues to set the standard in Washington on celebrating National Adoption Day. THE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: 9:00 am to 10:30 am Adoptions (open to the public) 10:30 am to 11:00 am Community celebration with light refreshments and lunch 11:00 am Adoptions will resume (open to the public) If you would like to participate and want further information, or if you want to schedule an adoption hearing, please contact Ian McCurdy Law Clerk to Judge David Kurtz Phone: (425) 388-3881 [email protected] The next (and final) planning meeting is noon to 1:00 pm on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, in the conference room to Courtroom C201 (near the elevators).
