I wonder how many young people truly understand what a Veteran is and what sacrifices these heros have made for each of us? I think it’s up to us to make sure we pass this important piece of history down to our children, grand children and great grandchildren. My husband was in the Coast Guard for 33 years, and so we visit Hanscom Air Force Base often to shop and to take our grandchildren to the park there. Every day at 5pm, all of the flags on the base are lowered and the Star Spangled Banner is piped in over the entire base. It’s quite something to experience. Every car stops driving and pulls to the side. Every person walking outside, leaving a building and walking to their car, etc. stops moving immediately and salutes in the direction of the nearest flag. Even the small toddlers on the playground stop and salute. Of course, most of the military on this base are living with a loved one in a life and death situation every day, and so honoring our flag and our country is first and foremost in their minds and very heartfelt. I’m hoping that each of us will take some time this month to talk to the young people in our family about this important day…maybe even teach them a patriotic song. Tell them your stories, share your memories of those important years. As you can see from the photo, my husband has already started educating our grandson! For many, the celebration of Christmas today is the most important holiday of the year. But many of the customs which we take for granted as part of the current holiday festivities and religious celebrations are actually a product of more recent history.
