------A Word from the Club Captain
The Club match season is just about done, and we know winter is around the corner because the
clocks have gone back and we have much less daylight for playing golf.
I would like to thank everybody from all the Club’s Sections that represented Little Hay this season
in the various matches played against other Clubs. I know I have enjoyed them immensely, and
look forward to next season.
If you didn’t take part in any of these Club matches but would like to for the coming season, please
contact Chris Miles, or any of the Club’s Section Captains. I’m sure you will enjoy taking part as
much as I have.
I would like to say thanks for all of the hard work from the Seniors’ Section for organising the All
Sections Cup, won this year by the Men’s Section.
Places are still available for the Winter League, so sign up in the competitions book if you wish to
participate; if you don’t already have a playing partner I’m sure we can find you one.
A reminder: the Doughty Cup will take place on 15 November at 9.00am; this is an all-Section
event, played as a Texas Scramble. The entry sheet can be found in the competitions book in
reception.

Rules of Golf
Ball Interfering with Play (Rule 22-2)
Except when a ball is in motion, if a player considers that the ball of another player might interfere
with his play, he may have it lifted.
A ball lifted under this rule must be replaced. The ball must not be cleaned unless it lies on the
putting green. In stroke play, a player required to lift his ball may play first rather than lift the ball.
Note: except on the putting green, a player may not lift his ball solely because he considers that it
might interfere with the play of another player. If a player lifts his ball without being asked to do
so, he incurs a penalty of one stroke.
Repairing Pitchmarks
With the greens now well softened, please repair pitch marks correctly, as illustrated here:
Slow Play and the Current Handicapping System
The R&A and England Golf are interested to hear the views from golfers around the world about
slow play and the current handicapping system; the following surveys have been compiled with this
in mind. The more golfers that complete the surveys, the more information the R&A, England
Golf and CONGU will have in order to help to alleviate the problems connected with slow play and
the current CONGU handicapping system. The survey about slow play can be found at:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PaceofPlayTest
and the link to the England Golf Handicapping page of the website below where the surveys are
situated.

Senior Moments
A Word from the Seniors’ Captain
We are now getting into the winter months and, before you have a chance to blink, we will once
again be teeing off from the mats. In talking with George I believe that his current plan, subject to
the weather, is to wait till late November or beginning of December before making the changeover.
Without doubt our greens over the last couple of months have been in excellent condition giving no
excuses for those missed putts. Obviously if we want good greens next year the crew are soon
going to need to hollow tine and spread worm repellent. But this is no different to any other course
and is a necessary cross to bear if we want good greens next year.
All our inter Club matches are now finished and the last one was away to Stockwood Park, which
Trevor and team won 4:2. Can I thank all the players who have taken part in the matches this year.
I sincerely hope you all found them enjoyable and that next year you are able to give Trevor the
same support you gave me. Can I also recommend to all Seniors who didn’t manage to play this
year that you give serious consideration to taking part in 2015. I am sure you will not for one
moment regret the decision.
This year we played 10 home matches and the same number away. If we eliminate the bias for the
home course advantage and add the away result, then we won seven matches, drew one and lost
just two. This was a great result, although the primary point is simply to meet new like-minded
golfing friends on different courses.
Earlier in the month, due to a glitch, we did not get to play the ladies in a greensome so we played a
Seniors only Texas scramble. The winners on countback were: Tim Farrow, Peter Balding,
Royston Fisher and Geoff Selley who just pipped Trevor Sargent, Bob Bussey, Percy Picton and
Syl Nolan. Well done to all who took part.
I am in the process of preparing an Income and Expenditure account for the interim period from 1
January to 15 October 2014. This sets out how I have managed all the funds during the year to
date. I will put a copy on the notice board and, if any of you have any queries, please let me know
as I will need to do a final account up to 31 December and I would prefer if at all possible to deal
with any points you may have now before I account to the Club committee.
Finally can I thank Derek Tarling for the sterling work he has done in finding a venue for our
Christmas lunch. Due to the most unfortunate circumstances he has had to find not just one venue
but a replacement and then another, finally settling on Chartridge Golf Club. We are all impressed
with the reports received from people who have been there and the standard is excellent. So if you
have not completed and returned the e-mail Derek sent out, please do so and make a big fat diary
note for Wednesday 3 December. This will be my last chance to thank you all before Trevor then
takes over as the Seniors’ Captain and announces his Vice-Captain.
All for now and happy golfing.
Paul

Ladies Section News
A Word from the Lady Captain
This is the last time I will be letting you know what the ladies of Little Hay have been doing this
month, as I pass the Captaincy over to Dorcas Kindinger on Monday 10 November. I am sure that
you will all support and help her during her year. It has been a challenging 15 months which I have
thoroughly enjoyed and would like to thank everyone for their continual assistance.
We have had a wonderful year with some notable achievements by the Little Hay Ladies and it has
been a pleasure to bask in their glory.
The Ladies' competitions during the year have brought in some amazing results and consequent
handicap cuts. I have had to cancel only one competition during the year due to bad weather and
course closure.
I wish the Ladies continuing success and happiness in the future.
Bobbie
The following excellent results were achieved away from Little Hay:
Harpenden Common Open: Little Hay ladies won first (Elaine Meagher, Linda Reeve,
Chris Marsden) and second places (Pauline Manning, Dorcas Kindinger, Linda Cusick).
Henley Greensomes - Little Hay Ladies won (Elaine Meagher, Linda Reeve).
Competition Results (Ladies)
- Business Ladies October Medal: Linda Cusick, Dorcas Kindinger, Elaine Meagher.
- Monday Ladies October Medal: Karen Burrows, Caroline Banks, Hee Young Crowhurst.
- David Johnson Trophy: Jenny Walker, Suzanne Brady, Maureen Bidgway.
- Autumn Fruit Bowl: Karen Burrows, Trish Joslin, Jacky Pearson.
- Captain’s team against the Past Captains was a draw.
- Founders’ Cup (Combined): Dawn Rose, Chris Marsden, Caroline Banks.
Junior Section News
General
After a very successful and busy year we have played our last two Junior competitions and also
played in the Finals day for the Hertfordshire Lexus League (see below for full reports).
Congratulations Jake Conroy, for coming second in the Junior division of The Disabled British
Open held on Monday 27 October. Overall it was a very good and inspirational day for all
participants.
Lexus League Finals Day
After coming second in our pool of the Lexus League, Little Hay Juniors were invited to play on 31
October in the Finals day at The Hertfordshire Golf Club, against six teams of seven players from
the best performing Clubs in the League. Team members’ scores were added together to obtain a
team score, and there was also an individual competition. The Juniors went out in handicap order
and, on a bright sunny and warm day, Emma Shepherd won the individual prize with 44 points, but
at the time of going to press the official team result is not yet known other than that the winners
were Hartsbourne.
5
The competition was followed by a formal meal and the Little Hay Junior team are pictured in their
finery afterwards!
Our team was: Hamish Jarvie (Capt), Robbie McIvor (Vice-Capt), Luke Wrathall, George Rocca,
Craig Walker, Emma Shepherd and Will Butler.
Winter League (Commencing Sunday 9 November)
This is not a Junior competition, but a Club non-qualifying competition which is played on
Sundays. The competition is suitable for Juniors with handicaps of 28 or less. This is a pairs
Stableford competition with the best six out of 10 matches counting. Full details of the
competition, including competition dates, are on the Club web site. We currently have one Junior
who is looking for a partner. If you haven’t signed up and would like to play, please contact
Martin Evans as soon as possible.
Doughty Cup Saturday 15 November
The final competition of the year is the Doughty Cup to be held on Saturday 15 November. The
competition is a Texas Scramble and is open to members of all Sections of the Club with
handicaps. Generally this competition is well supported by the Juniors, as it is a team event and is
a lot of fun. The sign up sheet is at reception. We currently have five members signed up and
would like more.

Results October Half term Competitions.
Stableford Competition 27 October. On a warm, sunny but windy day seven Juniors played a good
standard of golf that resulted in a Standard Scratch of 70 for the day. It was very pleasing to see
the close grouping of the score, with only six points separating the top five Juniors.
Congratulations to Will Butler (41pts first), Luke Wrathall (40pts second) and Emma Shepherd
(38pts third). The final Order of Merit points went to Hamish Jarvie (37pts) and Robbie McIvor
(35pts).
Medal Competition 29 October. On a grey drizzly day, eight intrepid Juniors tee’d off for the last
qualifying competition of the year. In these conditions we were expecting below par performances.
How wrong could be. First place with a score of 64 was Jake Conroy, in second place with a score
of 65 was Will Butler who beat Emma Shepherd (also 65) into third place on count back. The final
Order of Merit points went to Hamish Jarvie (67) and Craig Walker (73). Both Emma Shepherd
6
and Jake Conroy scored 78 gross. However, the honour of having the lowest gross score went to
Emma Shepherd on count back. Congratulations Emma.
Order Of Merit
This year the Order of Merit was keenly contested and there were 12 different winners in our
qualifying competitions. On the final day, three Juniors could still have won the competition.
However the Order of Merit was won by Emma Shepherd with 1787pts. Emma is a worthy winner
who has led the Order of Merit table since 4 April and has earned points in eight of the
competitions. She has shown dedication and enthusiasm, which has led to constant improvement
throughout the year. Second Place went to Will Howe who scored 1330. Congratulations Emma
and Will.

and in Conclusion…
…the last word is… having created The Haymaker and edited all 44 issues of it, this is my final
one. Sincere thanks go to all who have contributed to it over the years and thus helped to make it
possible to publish on 1st of every month. I have much enjoyed producing it for all members of
Little Hay Golf Club and now wish the incoming Editor, Frank Whiting, every success for the
future.
…and a touch of humour… every par-three hole in the world has a secret desire to humiliate
golfers. The shorter the hole, the greater its desire.
