SHOE FASHIONS
Fashion trends have a way of contributing negatively to our health, and one of
the most detrimental fashions is women’s footwear. From platform shoes in the
70’s to today's high heels and pointy toe shoes, there are so many poor options.
Yet many women tell me they wear ballet flats as if that is a sensible option.
Why are ballet flats so popular?
Firstly, all the well known fashion brands
have ballet pumps in their latest range Witchery, Diana Ferrari, Milana, Jimmy
Choo and Sandler. So while most of us can't
squeeze our feet into extremely pointy toe
shoes or walk more than a metre in stilettos,
we can feel fashionable in our flats.
Secondly, we like variety, and there are
many colours and styles of ballet flats.
Thirdly, ballet flats are easy to find,
whereas finding a well made shoe that
doesn't look frumpy is difficult.
What is the problem with flat shoes ?
Most
No 1soles on ballet flats are thin and
made from cardboard, providing no
cushioning for the nerves, joints and
tendons of the foot. Yet damage to
these is the most common cause of foot
pain. While our early forefathers
managed to walk barefoot all the time, they
didn't walk on the hard concrete surfaces
that most of us do today. Even young
children in preschools and playgrounds are
running on harder surfaces than their
grandparents played on. Also walking
barefoot meant that the foot built up
protection in the form of hardened skin.
These days we remove any thickened skin,
so added foot protection is needed in our
shoes. The everyday stresses on our feet are
very different to when mankind did not
No 2 wear shoes.
As the soles of ballet flats are so flimsy, that
the body of the shoe is usually made of a soft
material which does not support
your foot. This allows the forefoot
to slide out to the side when you
walk, putting added pressure on
the little toes, rolling the ankle
o u tward re p e ate d l y, and
damaging the ankle ligaments. The
heel is not held well by ballet flats
and tends to twist as we walk, in
turn straining the calf muscles.
You can see this bad wear pattern
on the soles of most ballet flats.
No 3 Ballet flats don't have any support to
the arch and their cut and shape makes it
hard to accommodate a soft orthotic without
causing excessive pressure on the top of the
foot.
Do you have foot pain? Do you wear ballet flats ?
Look at the soles and heel area of these shoes for signs of bad wear patterns.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
18TH NOVEMBER 2014
Due to overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to our previous Ambrose Competition, the Stableford Round scheduled for 18th November has been changed so that we will play another Ambrose! Be Ready!
25TH NOVEMBER 2014
The Draw Sheet for our Christmas event is now available in the Associates Room. Remember
that you can choose your partners for this game, but of course you can put your name down for
others to join you if you wish. The Competition will be a Team Stableford, best two scores to
count – 3 clubs and a putter only! Prizes will be given for best team outfits.
DONATION OF PRIZES:
There is a list in the Associates Room for the people who indicated (at the last Annual General
Meeting) that they would donate a Prize (up to $30 value) for this year’s presentations. Some
prize donations have been received but there are many still outstanding. If you are not sure
whether you made that commitment, or would like to add your name to the list, please check on
the Notice Board. All donations are very welcome and very much appreciated! Donations need
to be received by 25th November at the latest.
CHRISTMAS HAMPERS.
We have now started collection for the Christmas Hampers. Please leave your donations in the
baskets in the Associates room. The number of hampers we can give away depends on how
much is donated. The success of the Christmas raffles is a direct result of your generosity – last
year we donated $640, funds collected solely from raffle tickets!
