COUNSELING NEWS
Gratitude in November
Elementary School
Leaves are changing. Temperatures are dropping. And we are gearing up for our fourth value! And
what better month than the month of Thanksgiving to talk about the Big Idea of … GRATITUDE – letting
others know you see how they’ve helped you.
Research shows that people who practice gratitude regularly are happier. This month in school, we will
be encouraging students to practice gratitude often by writing or drawing something they are grateful
for. We would encourage you to do the same at home. You can try for once this month or once a
day! Setting a time (before bed, when waking up in the morning, at dinner, etc.) is a great way to start a
habit. If you would like to have your kids write down something they are grateful for that day, they can
bring it to school and put it in Our Gratitude Jar! Have fun!
Middle School
Students in the Middle School will be shown this short video clip to motivate their thinking of gratitude.
Wellcast – Gratitude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVua9fZQHME
Then, two activities will be going on all month long at school.
One: There will be Thank You postcards available for students to write a thank you to someone who
they appreciate. There will be a Gratitude Mailbox located in the office to drop off their mail. Once a
week, these letters will be delivered!
Two: Students will have opportunities to write “Gratitweets” to show what they are grateful for. A
central location will display them all to see just how much gratitude we can post during the month. All
students have to do it write one thing he or she has gratitude for and end it will #gratitude. Feel free to
continue this habit at home by doing it together as a family! Examples: the snow#gratitude, my
wonderful family#gratitude, pancakes for breakfast#gratitude, etc. Have fun!
