The Westfield Leader and The Scotch Plains – Fanwood TIMES A WATCHUNG COMMUNICATIONS, INC. PUBLICATION Free HS Diploma Program Offered at SP Public Library SCOTCH PLAINS – TheScotch Plains Public Library is offering qualified adults the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and credentialed career certificate through Career Online High School (COHS), a program brought to public libraries by Gale, part of Cengage Learning. Part of the world’s first accredited, private online school district, COHS is specifically designed to reengage adults into the education system and prepare them for entry into post-secondary career education or the workforce. Currently, more than 15 percent of adults in Union County lack a high school degree or equivalent. Scotch Plains Public Library will award scholarships for COHS to qualified learners looking to earn a high school diploma and advance their careers. Once enrolled, COHS pairs each student with an academic coach, who assists with developing an individual career plan, offers on- going guidance and encouragement, evaluates performance, and connects the learner with the resources needed to demonstrate mastery of the course material. Classes are supported by board-certified instructors and students have 24/7 access to the online learning platform. Coursework begins in one of eight high-growth, high-demand career fields (across a wide spectrum from child care and education to certified transportation), before progressing to the core academic subjects. Many students are able to graduate in as few as four to six months by transferring in previously earned high school credits. Residents can learn more about COHS at the Scotch Plains Public Library or by visiting the library’s web site www.scotlib.org. Paul Jackson Fund Reps. Visit Woman’s Club of WF WESTFIELD – At a recent Home Life Department meeting of the Woman's Club of Westfield, members welcomed Mary Jackson and Mary Doherty, representatives of The Paul Jackson Fund. Mary Jackson is the sister of the late Paul Jackson and Mary Doherty is Development Director of the fund. Paul Jackson, diagnosed with a spinal chord tumor at the age of twenty eight, was left paralyzed from the chest down and lived the rest of his life in a wheel chair. After surgery, there was much need for extensive rehabilitation and also much need for financial assistance to help pay for the uninsured procedures. A group of friends made up of former Westfield High School fellow football players along with parents of little leaguers Paul had coached got together, the seed was planted and The Paul Jackson Fund was born. Paul was so touched by their giving and generous spirit that when he became physically able, he took the helm of the fund and began to work and pass on good will to others who had no one to turn to in time of crisis and worked toward "giving hope to people without hope." Many have been helped and many, many more will be helped in the future by this charity of last resort for families with great need. The WCW ladies present found this story of tragedy that turned to good will a real inspiration. Paul has passed away yet he continues to live on touching the lives of others at times when a helping hand is so needed. For more Paul Jackson Fund information contact [email protected]. Fund WESTFIELD – The Education Fund’s Family Science Night on October 16, was a STEM adventure. Over 600 parents and students worked together to hone their science, technology, engineering, and math skills. The highlight of the evening was the robots in action. Both the Westfield Robotics Team and the Union County Vocational Tech School demonstrated the robots’ capabilities. These high school students also showcased the wonders of the 3-D printer and helped many children learn how to program a robot. The science wing at the high school was bustling with hands-on experiences that highlighted the STEM program taught in Westfield’s schools. Paper tables structured by parents and their children were able to hold up to thirty books. Pennies were cleaned with the chemistry of vinegar. Marshmallows and spaghetti created strong structures, and straw boat engineering helped to design watercraft that could float on the “high seas.” Geodesic dome builders and elephant toothpaste creators were filled with great curiosity as they worked with their parents. Even Fred, the gummy worm, was saved by engineering. Thanks to Westfield’s incredible teacher volunteers, the event was both fun and educational. The Education Fund will use donations from this event to fund teacher grants and to help with STEM supplies for all ten schools. If you would like to help with this endeavor, visit [email protected]. We also invite you to join the Education Fund’s team.
