Under Coach Rosenmeier, the Cranford Cougars upset the Summit Hilltoppers, 33-14, on October 2 for the first time since 1991, ending their state-leading 27game winning streak. For that achievement, the team will be inducted into the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame on October 23. In the final game of the tournament, the Grey Bees plated three runs in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth to take a 6-5 lead over a Montclair team that had won 25 straight games then ended the game with a 4-6-3 play. On occasion the boisterous Raider student section would wave the American flag and begin singing the National Anthem. “It is always like that when these two teams play one another,” said Coach Breznitsky. “It is one of the best rivalries in the state, really. I know that when we played them over at their place earlier we had almost half of the stands filled with Raider fans. The fans take it seriously. Two good programs that border each other, you are going to have that kind of intensity.” After the Lipshitz goal, Westfield began pressing the Raider defense the rest of the way. Westfield’s best scoring opportunity came with just over 10 minutes remaining when Michael Prosuk got off a solid shot at the goal that was denied by a diving Sean Murray.
