Blue Devil senior Lil Scott and
sophomores Taylor Morgan and
Haley Farella, also dangerous scoring threats, demonstrated their defensive skills and were instrumental
in turning the path of the ball in their
direction.
“I have been filling in wherever the
team needs, whether that be up top or
in the back. Especially our defense,
but our team in general did a really
good job of battling today. Every
player left everything they had on the
field. I think we never played Scotch

to get it. I usually don’t sub my back
line, but we have girls who can play
and be subs. We are still waiting for
Hannah Liddy to come back from
injury then we will have all the pieces
in place,” Blue Devil Head Coach
Alex Schmidt said.
Wind blowing in the face of the
Blue Devils was a definite factor in
the first half, but the stats were basically the same with each team taking
two shots on goal and each goalkeeper (Blue Devil Lizzie Brucia and
Raider Andrea Leitner) making a pair
of saves. The most dangerous shot at
the goal came off the foot of Rodgers
six minutes into the game when she
drilled a long shot that banged solidly
off the crossbar. Minutes later, Morgan launched a wicked shot that a
defender managed to deflect away
from the goal then with two minutes
left in the half, Brucia made a diving
save to her right.
“It [wind] definitely was a factor. A
lot of balls went out of bounds that
wouldn’t have. We had some chances.
Westfield had some chances,” Coach
Ewing said.
The second half was still nobody’s
game, although the Raiders did get
off five shots, two of the threatening
nature, and the Blue Devils took two
shots that Leitner smothered. The first
Raider threatening shot sprouted from
Rodgers early in the half, but Brucia
pounced on it. The second threat came
after a corner kick into Diggs, but
Brucia intercepted it. Blue Devil freshman Grace Elliott ripped sharp shot

from the right side, but Leitner
stopped it at the near post.
After a scoreless and shotless first
overtime, the Raiders managed two
shots at the goal. The first was a free
kick from Rodgers that was saved
and the second came from Cornwell,
also stopped by Brucia.
“The whole game we had a chance
to put it away. There were parts where
we were getting down on each other,
but we picked each other up to get
through the game. I think we deserved to win, but not everything happens,” Baliatico said.
“It was a really good battle. [It was]
Our goal for the entire season as a
young team. We start all underclassmen with a few seniors. We want to
grow. We want to be hitting our stride
when the tournament comes. This
year, every game for the most part has
been better than the last. The girls are
a little pumped up now, and that was
your average Westfield/Scotch Plains
battle. Our girls were strong. They
were mentally strong, physically
strong,” Coach Schmidt said.
The first round of the Union County
Tournament began on October 11, and
the Raiders received the top seed. The
Blue Devils received the fifth seed and
hosted Linden on October 12.
“We definitely deserved the first
seed. We are still undefeated. We have
two ties [Union, Westfield]. We come
out strong every game,” Baliatico said.

part. It was a great job by the entire
defense and the defensive coaches.
Coach [Joe] Hubert does an outstanding job on the defensive end and
coach [Peter] Kane is coordinator of
special teams. That was really the
difference in the game tonight,” Cougar Head Coach Erik Rosenmeier
said.
The 5-0 Cougars sent a message
early, after they stopped the Vikings
on their first series, when they
marched 75 yards on 15 plays for
their first TD when Schetelich connected with Christiano for 31 yard
scoring pass play with 2:07 left in the
first quarter. Erik Donahue (2 receptions, 21 yards) and Norton (3 receptions, 15 yards) made key grabs on
the drive.
Trotter put the Vikings in jeopardy
when he returned a punt 45 yards to
the Voorhees 16. Unfortunately,
Schetelich’s pass was picked off in
the end zone. However, thanks to
stubborn defense, the Cougars got
good field position at the Voorhees
48. Walker weaved his way for a 33yard gain then after three more Cougar carries, Schetelich slipped in from
the two. A little pitchout to Christiano
resulted in the two-point conversion
and Cranford had a 15-0 lead with
7:39 left in the half.
Voorhees answered with an 11yard 57-yard scoring drive when running back Colin Evanko scored from
the two with 2:00 remaining. Set up

In the fourth quarter, Coach
Rosenmeier brought in the reserves
to get a little action, but he did not
expect sophomore running back Ryan
Bakie to hook around the right side
and elude all defenders en route to a
54-yard TD sprint. Sophomore Brian
Oblachinski’s PAT was good.
“We have a lot of good kids this
year. Even the second stringers are
good. We can use anybody,” Walker
said.
“I thought the defense was outstanding tonight. I thought we were
very good on defense and very good
on special teams. I thought Voorhees
was very good on defense. It didn’t
necessarily show it in the end, because we were able to score. But we
kept getting the ball back and we kept
getting good field position,” Coach
Rosenmeier said. “When you get an
extra chance, and we did that twice
with the fake punts, it’s a good thing
for our offense.”
“We knew they were 4-0. Four and
0 against 4-0! We came out and played
football. We just played our game.
We did exactly what our coaches tell
us to do,” Trotter said.

to Christiano, the Cougars had another chance and Norton nailed a 35yard field goal with :04.1 left in the
half.
Lightning struck on the very first
series of the second half when
Schetelich spotted Walker sprinting
down the center and connected for a
50-yard TD. Norton’s PAT made the
score 25-7.
“They didn’t have any safeties up
there. I saw that, so I hustled up the
field and nobody was around me. So
I took the six [points],” Walker explained.
Considering his opportunities to
successfully carry the ball, Walker
said, “The best one was probably up
the sideline over here. I got some
good blocks from [Will] Fries and
just my whole line. They were great
blockers all night to help us break out
into the open field.”
The defense forced Voorhees to
punt again and this time Trotter returned the punt to the Viking 28. Four
plays later with 6:07 on the clock,
Schetelich scooted in from the six.
Norton nailed the PAT. The Cougars’
next scoring drive ended in Norton’s
25-yard field goal with :43.7 left in

playoff feel to it. On occasion the
boisterous Raider student section

“It is always like that when these
two teams play one another,” said

best rivalries in the state, really. I
know that when we played them over
at their place earlier we had almost
half of the stands filled with Raider
fans. The fans take it seriously. Two
good programs that border each other,
you are going to have that kind of

After the Lipshitz goal, Westfield
began pressing the Raider defense
the rest of the way. Westfield’s best
scoring opportunity came with just
over 10 minutes remaining when
Michael Prosuk got off a solid shot at
the goal that was denied by a diving
Sean Murray. As the clock wound
down, the Raider fans began celebrating in anticipation of the outcome.
“Any time you can beat your rival

special,” said Lipshitz. “They beat us
here at our place last year so, as a
senior, it means a lot to be able to
avenge that and then get that second
win against them as well.”
Scotch Plains-Fanwood improved
its season mark to 10-2 with the victory. Westfield meanwhile, fell to 7-3.
“I thought we deserved the win

I think we dominated the game in
