He will lead them to springs of living water Revelation 7:17 | | All Saints NOVEMBER 2, 2014 • ALL SAINTS SUNDAY • 9:00 AM In holy baptism God makes saints out of sinners. In holy communion God forgives the sins of all the saints. Today we give thanks for God’s gracious working in the lives of his saints and all the saints “who from their labors rest”, who have “fought the good fight” and will with us on the Last Day “rise in bright array”. In fact, in our familiar preface to holy communion, we are invited to join “with all the saints, with the choirs of angels and the hosts of heaven” to “laud and magnify [God’s] glorious name”. In the Beatitudes, Jesus proclaims the blessings of his reign to his disciples then and now. To broken and empty-handed disciples, Jesus gives no less than the kingdom of heaven itself. While comfort, righteousness, mercy and the kingdom are theirs and ours now in Christ, the saints who rest from their labors have received these blessings in full. Graciously knit together as one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of Jesus Christ, we join with angels, archangels and with the all the company of heaven to sing the praises of our God, who gives life that never ends! 3 Gathering Prelude Words of Welcome Announcements and shared greetings. People: But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. Officiant: Since we are gathered to hear God’s word, call upon him in prayer and praise and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word and deed and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as his people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking his grace for the sake of Christ and saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner”. People: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. Absolution Officiant: Almighty God in his mercy has given his Son to die for you and for his sake forgives you all your sins. Keep us in fellowship with all your saints, and bring us at last to the joy of your heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ, your son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People:Amen. Hymn “Behold a Host Arrayed in White” LW 192 Verse three; see opposite page. 7 The Word Revelation 7:9–17 The book of Revelation is written to seven churches in western Asia Minor during a time of great oppression. Today’s reading is a response to the question asked in 6:17: “Who is able to stand?” The writer gives the faithful the assurance of God’s protection and a vision of victory. Reader: The first lesson is from Revelation, chapter seven. After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!” Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes— who are they, and where did they come from?” I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’” Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! 1 John 3:1–3 A saint is one who has been set apart by God for God’s purposes. God, out of divine love, set us apart to be the children of God. Our holy hope is that we shall see God as God really is. Reader: The second lesson is from First John, chapter three. See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Matthew 5:1–12 In the beatitudes, Jesus provides a unique description of those who are blessed with God’s favor. His teaching is surprising and shocking to those who seek wealth, fame, and control over others. Officiant: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter. People: Glo-ry to you, O Lord! Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. He said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Officiant: This is the Gospel of our Lord. We believe in God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
