The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML), an auxiliary of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod,
coordinates the women of the church in mission. The LWML is a leading force in missions and ministry around
the world through members’ sacrificial gifts of mites, tithes, offerings and tireless service. The work of these Lutheran Women in Mission reaches people of all walks of life, foreign and domestic, in the interest of the advance
of witness, mercy and life together for all those who are loved into life through the death and resurrection of our
Lord Jesus Christ. Countless millions have been reached and saved alive for Christ through their ministry, and
we pray that their grace-filled, faithful labor in sacrifices and offerings may rise to our Lord in a way that is sweet
and fragrant.

Confession
Officiant: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
Officiant: Let us then confess our sins to God, our Father.
People: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against
you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We

Officiant: Let us pray. Most Gracious God and Father, we give you thanks this day for the ministry and work of all your saints,
especially Lutheran Women in Mission, and we pray that you will continue to receive us all and our labor by faith as a
fragrant offering and sacrifice for the work of your church and kingdom; through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Word
a
Jeremiah 26:1–15
Reader: The first lesson is from Jeremiah, chapter 26.
Early in the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: “This is what the Lord
says: Stand in the courtyard of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to
worship in the house of the Lord. Tell them everything I command you; do not omit a word. Perhaps they will listen and each will turn from their evil ways. Then I will relent and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning
because of the evil they have done. Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: If you do not listen to me and follow
my law, which I have set before you, and if you do not listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I
have sent to you again and again (though you have not listened), then I will make this house like Shiloh and this
city a curse among all the nations of the earth.’” The priests, the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speak
these words in the house of the Lord. But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord
had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, “You must die! Why
do you prophesy in the Lord’s name that this house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted?”
And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord. When the officials of Judah heard about
these things, they went up from the royal palace to the house of the Lord and took their places at the entrance of
the New Gate of the Lord’s house. Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and all the people, “This
man should be sentenced to death because he has prophesied against this city. You have heard it with your own
ears!” Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people:“The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and this
city all the things you have heard. Now reform your ways and your actions and obey the Lord your God. Then the Lord
will relent and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you. As for me, I am in your hands; do with me
whatever you think is good and right. Be assured, however, that if you put me to death, you will bring the guilt
of innocent blood on yourselves and on this city and on those who live in it, for in truth the Lord has sent me to
you to speak all these words in your hearing.”

Ephesians 5:1–10
Reader: The second lesson is from Ephesians, chapter five.
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and
gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But among you there must not be even a hint of
sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor
should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of
this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in
the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s
wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness,
righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.

Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and
the crowd was amazed. But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”
Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom
divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. If Satan is divided against himself,
how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. Now if I drive
out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if I
drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man, fully
armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him,
he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder. Whoever is not with me is against
me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through
arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds
the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and
they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.” As Jesus was saying these
things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” He replied,
“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

Please stand.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he
rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From
thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

In fervent gratitude for the Savior’s dying love and his blood-bought gift of redemption, we dedicate ourselves
to him with all that we are and have; and in obedience to his call for workers in the harvest fields, we pledge
him our willing service wherever and whenever he has need of us. We consecrate to our Savior our hands to
work for him, our feet to go on his errands, our voices to sing his praises, our lips to proclaim his redeeming
love, our silver and our gold to extend his Kingdom, our will to do his will and every power of our life to the
great task of bringing the lost and the erring into eternal fellowship with him. Amen.

COMING SOON TO SAINT JOHN’S Sun, Oct. 26 Reformation Sunday: When Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the Wittenberg Chapel door in
1517, he set in motion a reform of the church through the rediscovery of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,
a reform that brought the truth of Jesus’ redemptive sacrifice on the cross to the masses. 9:00 am,
Worship Center; It’s traditional to wear red on Reformation Sunday, to symbolize the renewing fire of the
Holy Spirit and the martyrdom of Luther’s contemporaries who called for the reformation of the church.
Sun, Nov. 2 All Saints Sunday: To Lutherans, who believe that all sinners are made God’s holy saints in the
cleansing waters of Holy Baptism, All Saints Sunday is a celebration of the entire priesthood of
believers, especially the members, family and friends of Saint John’s who were called to their

EBOLA
EPIDEMIC
Grace to you and peace from God
our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
As Ebola continues its deadly sweep
across West Africa, the people of the
LCMS continue to respond with
prayer and support for our relief efforts.
Through your generosity we have given mercy grants
totaling $67,729 to help our brothers and sisters in
the most afflicted nations — Liberia, Sierra Leone
and Guinea. These grants provide food, sanitation
and cleaning supplies, and Ebola prevention education.
Christ’s love for the whole person, body and soul, is our model as we battle
against Ebola. Christian service of our neighbor finds its source, motivation and
example in Christ’s incarnate, redeeming, atoning and active love (Phil. 2:1-11).
Every aspect of the faith drives us outside ourselves to care for our neighbor
next door and across the world in Africa.

The effort to save lives from Ebola will be a long fight, some saying up to two
years. We will be in this for the long haul — that is a hallmark of our LCMS
mercy work. As Lutherans, we stay until the job is done, bringing physical aid
and comfort even as we proclaim the lifesaving Gospel.

care workers, governments and others whose vocation brings them into contact
with this disease.
