OpenStack is quickly becoming the preferred open source choice for building
private clouds and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offerings. Customers in many
industries, including cloud services, financial services and telecommunications

OpenStack Implementation with Emulex OCe14000 using UMC
Emulex Universal Multi-Channel (UMC) allows each NIC to be carved into 16 separate channels with isolated transmit and receive queues and
individual MAC addresses, providing each VLAN a separate physical function. Major OEMs deliver Emulex UMC capabilities through their own
networking offerings, for example Dell Network Partitioning (NPAR), HP FlexFabric, and IBM Virtual Fabric, which enables allocation of separate
physical functions for VM migration, console management, iSCSI and NFS storage, and network traffic for individual VMs.
Cost optimization through port consolidation and switch independence
Emulex UMC enables multiple OpenStack functions to be consolidated onto fewer I/O ports. Combining ports minimizes the I/O sprawl as
customers can easily support the management, compute, storage and networking functions of OpenStack on fewer ports and also ensures each
port is fully utilized in order to take full advantages of I/O resources. In addition, because Emulex UMC is switch agnostic, it will work in any 10 or
40Gb Ethernet environment, allowing customers to build upon their existing infrastructure.
Improved performance with QoS
Using Emulex UMC, each OpenStack function can be assigned a minimum and maximum bandwidth. This allows more important functions, such
as compute or storage, to have the network capacity they need to continue performing even under heavy network loads. Bandwidth can easily be
reallocated as necessary given changing workload conditions. This separation ensures that priority traffic has a minimum bandwidth allocation
and that independent channels are not impacted due to network and port congestion.
Traffic isolation improves availability and security
UMC allows different VLANs to be assigned to different physical functions. The hardware enforced channels provide stronger isolation between
networks and traffic types. This configuration enables higher availability in case of VLAN failure and provides additional security should the
network be compromised.
Simplified management
Emulex UMC reduces the number of devices and simplifies traffic management. It is easily administered through OneCommand Manager, or
through VMware vRealize, using the OneCommand Manager web client. This ensures simplified management and configurability for Emulex
UMC in an OpenStack environment.
