The Airlifter for the 21
Century
Three Aircraft in One
OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY
STRATEGIC
With a maximum payload of up to 37 tonnes, the A400M
can carry outsize loads, drop more paratroops and
larger/heavier loads from both high and low altitudes and
enable rapid CASEVAC/MEDEVAC evacuation.
A strategic airlifter able to carry heavy and outsize loads
such as cranes or excavators at high cruise speed over
a long range and above turbulent clouds, to deliver
them when they are needed.
The Solution for
• Aerial Delivery: From high (up to 40 000 ft) to
very low level (15 ft above the ground).
• Accommodates up to 66 standard NATO
stretchers and 25 medical personnel seated.
ASEAN
• High survivability in hostile environment: A400M
defensive Aids Sub-System (DASS).
The A400M can transport twice the payload than
previous generation tactical airlifters at the same
distance or the same payload at twice the distance,
as high and nearly as fast as a turbofan aircraft.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
The state-of-the-art and cost-effective technologies
inherited from Airbus’ latest aircraft models, clearly put
the A400M as an airlifter in a class of its own for the
21st century.
TACTICAL
• State-Of-The-Art cockpit based on the A380
cockpit with added military features.
A tactical airlifter able to transport essential military
loads such as mobile cranes and excavators using
short and soft unpaved airstrips, to deliver them where
they are needed.
• 4 x TP400-D6 turboprop engine, 11 000 SHP
each.
The A400M can deliver a typical payload of 25
tonnes (55 100 lb) over a range of 2450 nm (4500
km) into a 2500 ft (750 m) grass/sand soft airstrip
(CBR-6), with enough fuel on board for a 500 nm
(930 km) return trip.
• Fly-By-Wire Control Systems with expanded
o
flight envelope protection (120 in roll).
COST-EFFECTIVE
TANKER
A400M In-Service Support (ISS) is based on proven
Airbus civil methods and procedures resulting in both
operational and economic benefits achieving a high
level of aircraft availability and a cost-effective fleet.
• 15 days maintenance free operating period
• 90 days / 360 FH without scheduled
Maintenance
• Scheduled maintenance is 50 days in 5 years
• Mission reliability over 98%
A built-in tactical tanker able to refuel a wide range of
probe-equipped receiver types, from fighters to other
large aircraft at those receivers’ speeds and altitudes.

On a typical mission involving loiter for two hours at
a range of 500 nm (930 km) from base, the A400M
would have a potential “Fuel Giveaway” of more
than 35 tonnes (77 000 lb), leaving sufficient fuel for
a return to base, with military reserves.

HUMANITARIAN MISSION WITH A FLEET OF A400M
Performance and Specifications
Within the first three days, an ASEAN fleet of eight A400M aircraft is able to deploy 960 tonnes
(2 116 000 lb) of humanitarian aid to a natural disaster in South East Asia (8 x 20 tonnes at each
mission, 6 rotations), over a range of 1600 nm (4500 km) into a 2500 ft (750 m) grass / sand soft
airstrip (CBR-6) and returning to base without refuelling.
54 personnel + 9 pallets with basic supplies
Heavy excavator + pallets + rescue personnel
Within seven days, the same A400M fleet would have delivered 2400 tonnes (5 300 000 lb) of
equipment to consolidate the assistance to the population: search and rescue means, basic
supplies for the people, heavy medical assistance like mobile hospitals, mobile equipment to restore
communications and main facilities, etc.
