NOVEMBER 2014 Riverstone 9000 N. CONGRESS AVENUE, KANSAS CITY, MO 64153 (816) 741-2555 The First Thanksgiving Festivals with the spirit of giving thanks have been common in many cultures, so determining the original Thanksgiving celebration proves difficult. But tradition recognizes the 1621 feast between the Pilgrim settlers at Plymouth Colony and neighboring American Indians as America’s first Thanksgiving. STAFF Management Jon And Jadonna Robinson Executive Chef Cameron Macpherson Marketing Director Esther Tuggle Lifestyle Director Laura Swanson Dining Room Supervisor Rachel Tjarks Sailing from England aboard the Mayflower, the Pilgrims arrived in present-day Massachusetts in the fall of 1620, yet remained on the ship for several months. When the colonists moved ashore the following spring, they were visited by two English-speaking Indians, Samoset and Squanto, who showed the Pilgrims how to hunt and grow their own food. Squanto also served as an interpreter and mediator between the settlers and the neighboring Wampanoag tribe. Sometime between Sept. 21 and Nov. 1, the Pilgrims organized a feast to celebrate the success of their first crop. Around 90 Wampanoag, including Chief Massasoit, joined the surviving colonists for the festivities, which lasted for three days and included games, singing and dancing, in addition to the elaborate meal. The Pilgrims’ records indicate that regional fowl, such as ducks, geese, swans and, yes, probably turkey, were served at the feast, along with venison brought by the Wampanoag. Historians believe that other foods present at the meal included fish and shellfish, beans, onions, porridge made from cornmeal, berries, squash and pumpkin — but no pumpkin pie. Here is some insight into a few of the most well-known practices. Saluting: Opinions vary about how the hand salute began, but it is one of the oldest forms of expressing respect in the military. Lower-ranking service members are required to salute when recognizing a senior member. The salute is held until the gesture is returned. Saluting is also required when paying respect to the flag and the national anthem. The Arch of Sabers: Anyone who attends a military wedding will undoubtedly be impressed by the sight of an honor guard holding up their swords or sabers to create an arch for the newlyweds to walk under when leaving the ceremony. The gesture represents the couple’s safe transition into their new life together. It is also tradition to use a military sword to cut the wedding cake. Flag folding: At military funerals, it is common for the coffin to be draped with an American flag. An honor guard folds the flag at the end of the service and presents it to the next of kin. The flag is folded with precisely 12 folds, ending in a triangular shape with only the field of blue and white stars showing. Party like it's 1985! Dancing Duo! Riverstone “Century Club” Gains Two New Members in 2014 The years were 1913 and 1914! Woodrow Wilson was president of the United States and the U.S. Post Office began parcel post deliveries in 1913. 1914 found the first red and green traffic lights installed in Cleveland, Ohio, and World War I had begun. But the best news of those years concerned new arrivals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Faucett, Mo. Yes — Paul Westfall and Alma Campbell Stephens are joining this exclusive club this year by being led into membership by Elsie Lingren Lofgren, a lovely lady who was born in Sweden in 1913! Their memories contain both joys and heartaches — but, it seems their lives have been more of joy than sorrow — because, through 100 years, they have given their love and shared their joys with those around them. Century Club Paul attributes his longevity to his mother’s strong blood lines. She, too, reached the century mark! From his beginning as a manager of a root beer stand, Paul earned a master’s degree in chemistry from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., and worked as the research director for Cook, Paint and Varnish Company for 41 years. After having dated the “love of his life” for 10 years, he made Eloise Johnson his wife. With the aid of his supportive and loving wife, the family grew. Paul is proud of his four sons who all received university degrees — and have been very successful in their chosen fields. In retirement, Paul and Eloise traveled. But, through the years, their greatest joys have been “just being with family!” Elsie believes that “clean living” has allowed her to enjoy a long active life. She had no bad habits for fear they would hamper her athletic abilities. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling — even after her marriage to Lloyd and the birth of their two daughters. Elsie worked for Hiram Walker Distilleries as well as providing a home for her husband and family. Her daughters now live in Arizona and North Carolina — but, much of her family joy comes from the visits of grandchildren, Kellie Reneu and Darin Franklin. Time changes some things in life — golf and bowling are now wonderful memories — so, Elsie now finds fun at the bridge table and enjoys fellowship with her friends! Alma was born on a farm near Faucett, Mo. She walked to a country school and enjoyed farm life with her parents and three siblings. Upon graduation from Bolckow High School, Alma married the love of her life, William Lloyd Stephens. The union was blessed with five children — four girls and one boy. For 54 years, on a farm near Quitman, Mo, Alma and Lloyd nurtured their family. Alma remembers lots of hard work that was accompanied by much love and joy. After some years living alone, her son, Ronald, convinced Alma to move to Riverstone where she could be near family, play cards and share the fellowship of residents. She believes hard work and good genes have brought her to this birthday! Over the years, her family has grown and scattered, but the large group still gathers for special holidays. Even though her family is not all nearby, Alma would readily agree that “closeness in a family really has nothing to do with geography!” All three Century Club members can be seen enjoying an active lifestyle at Riverstone. Whether they are at the bridge table, playing bingo, reading a good book, at the theater, or just enjoying good food and fellowship with their friends, this trio continues to live, learn, laugh and love, giving us a prime example of what it takes to make life great at any age!
