FROM THE PANEL:
We have had a very busy 2014 so far with Student Courses and examinations, Jacqueline
Morland Awards and the re-introduction of the North Queensland Bursary.
2015 will be a year of celebration. The Queensland Panel will be celebrating the 20 th Year
of the Jacqueline Morland Awards which was formally called the South Queensland
Regional Panel Scholarship and the 80th Anniversary of the Royal Academy of Dance in
Australia.
We are very excited to announce that, in honour of the 20th Anniversary of the Jacqueline
Morland Awards, a special one week Scholarship will be presented to a student from any of
the four levels, to attend the New Zealand School of Dance with prize money of $1000, to
assist with airfare and accommodation.
The Dates for the awards are 21/22 March 2015. In 2015 programme we are offering new
initiatives for students entering the JMA so look out for the changes in the 2015 Brochure.
Again we will be asking teachers to support the Jacqueline Morland Awards 2015 by having
your students audition for the group items to be performed at the Awards. In 2015, there
will be two groups – a classical group for Grade 2, 3 and 4 and a musical theatre group for
12 years and over students.
The Panel will also be holding a Cocktail Party on Saturday 21 March to celebrate the 20th
Anniversary with lots of memorabilia of past years.
New Syllabi
New Grades 4 and 5 (male/female), Advanced Foundation (male/female) and Advanced 1 and 2
(female) will be examined from 1 January 2015.
Current old syllabi for Grades 4 and 5 (male/female), Advanced Foundation (male/female),
Advanced 1 and 2 (female) will cease to be examined from 31 December 2014.
All Panel Course Brochures and events can be found on the RAD Website under Courses
and Classes – Courses Queensland. Brochures are available within a day or two from
emailing/ mailing the original documents to teachers.
JACQUELINE MORLAND AWARDS 2014
The Jacqueline Morland Awards were held on March 29/30 at Edmund
Rice Performing Arts Centre. The weekend proved to be most
successful with a larger number of entries and audience viewing than
in past years. The three judges, Andrea Parkyn, Elise May and Steven
Heathcote AM were impressed with the standard of the students
competing throughout the weekend.
We would like to thank all the businesses who sponsored the event
and a big thank you to teachers for your ongoing support. Next year
we will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Awards with a
special cocktail evening on the Saturday night of the Awards. Please
put this date in your diary and come celebrate along with past and
present Panel members and invited guests.

North Queensland Bursary 2014
The North Queensland Bursary was held in Mackay on Sunday August 17 2014 at the CQ
Conservatorium of Music. Students entered for the Bursary came from Mackay, Townsville,
Atherton, Proserpine and Rockhampton. The Queensland Panel would like to thank the
Teachers from Mackay who helped organise and run this most successful event and also a
big thank you to all the sponsors. Over 80 students over four levels from Intermediate
Foundation to Solo Seal entered the bursary. Nicole Galea was the class teacher on the day
putting the students through an open class on stage followed by each entrant performing
one of their exam variations in smaller groups. Mary Li judged the event and Judith Brown
was the accompanist throughout the day. The Overall North Queensland Bursary Training
Enhancement Award was won by Mackay Student Morgan Buckton (Dance Express Mackay).
The Betty Meskell Award for Artistry was awarded to Anastasia Lewis (Capricorn School of
Dancing, Rockhampton)

January Teacher’s Course
21st January - 23rd January 2015
The Queensland Regional Panel will be holding a Teacher’s Course in January 2015 covering topics such as
First Aid and CPR, Working with students with difficult feet and preparing them for pointe work, thera-band
workshop and a psychologist’s session talking about how to deal with difficult parents and students.
Expressions Dance Company will be providing a Focus workshop on partnering, lifting beyond
counterbalances, specific turning, lifting phrases and corner work.
The Panel will also be holding their AGM on Thursday night 22 January 2015 at the Victoria Park Golf
Course. This event will be followed by a cocktail party. The Panel members look forward to seeing
teachers at the Teacher’s Course and AGM Cocktail Party in the new year.
Solo Seal Award 2014
Solo Seal Award 2014 was held on Sunday 5 October at Promenade Dance Studios. Two Candidates,
Alicia Townsend ( Annette Roselli Dance Academy) and Tahlia Downey ( Wendy Barker Dance Studios
Gladstone) both sat their Solo Seal award in front of examiner Marie Walton-Mahon and Guest Judge
Rachael Walsh and an invited audience. We would like to congratulate both students on their dedication
and hard work preparing for this award. All the best for their future careers in dance.
Grade 4-5 Teacher’s Course
In the September School holidays, there were a number of courses held in Brisbane and the Gold Coast
for the New Grade 4-5 work and the New Advanced Foundation through to Advanced 2 work. The Grade
4-5 Course was tutored by Carolyn Carattini and the Advanced work by Anne Fraser.

Retired Examiner’s Luncheon 2014 – Brisbane
On Friday 5th September, the Royal Academy of Dance held the Retired examiner’s Luncheon at
Customs House Brisbane. Retired examiners throughout Australia gathered together to celebrate their
year of dedication to the Academy and to celebrate the recent retirement of Valerie Bayley-Logan and
Prudence Bowen from examining. Both were presented plaques from London for this special occasion.
