The readings reference the temple of God in a physical and a spiritual sense. Many of us recognize the importance of the physical temples in which we worship each Sunday. But it may be more difficult to realize that each of us is a temple of God, and that God’s Spirit dwells in us. And so we must care for this temple which houses God’s Spirit and which enables us to care and reverence each other as temples. We need to care for ourselves physically, since our life is a gift. And we must care for our spirit which lives on after our earthly tent, our bodies, no longer serve us. November 2-9 is Vocation Awareness Week when we pray for faithfulness in all vocations: single, married, and religious. WHO WILL FILL THESE SHOES? is a diocesan initiative encouraging us to work for an increase in priestly vocations. An event for young men and their parents will be held on November 28 at the Cathedral. What can each of us do to encourage vocations? First, pray daily that young men will hear and respond to the call. And imagine if you encounter a young man who seems to have an energy for life in the Church and you briefly, but sincerely tell him: “You’d make a great priest! Ever consider it?” This simple statement to an open heart could plant seeds that God could bring to a fruitful harvest. It never hurts to ask! In Christ, Father John Phan “In Celebration of Sharing and Joyful Living” Heavenly Father, We give thanks for the inspiration of your Holy Spirit as we reflect on the Gospel call to exercise Christ’s stewardship on our journey of faith. We ask you to guide us, and show us how to be faithful in the plans we make, the actions we take, and the love we share as we build your Kingdom on earth. Give us the courage to find wisdom in our sacrifices, joy in our generosity, and hope in the compassion we show, especially to those most in need of your comfort and care. And create in us a more open heart and a greater awareness of our need to grow, to change, to be transformed, so that we may be better stewards of your gifts for the good of all. Amen. FEED YOUR SPIRIT Facing difficulties in prayer The habitual difficulty in prayer is distraction. It can affect words and their meaning in vocal prayer; it can concern, more profoundly, him to whom we are praying, in vocal prayer (liturgical or personal), meditation, and contemplative prayer. To set about hunting down distractions would be to fall into their trap, when all that is necessary is to turn back to our heart: for a distraction reveals to us what we are attached to, and this humble awareness before the Lord should awaken our preferential love for him and lead us resolutely to offer him our heart to be purified. Therein lies the battle, the choice of which master to serve. In positive terms, the battle against the possessive and dominating self requires vigilance, sobriety of heart. When Jesus insists on vigilance, he always relates it to himself, to his coming on the last day and every day: today. The bridegroom comes in the middle of the night; the light that must not be extinguished is that of faith: "'Come,' my heart says, 'seek his face!'" Another difficulty, especially for those who sincerely want to pray, is dryness. Dryness belongs to contemplative prayer when the heart is separated from God, with no taste for thoughts, memories, and feelings, even spiritual ones. This is the moment of sheer faith clinging faithfully to Jesus in his agony and in his tomb. "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if dies, it bears much fruit." If dryness is due to the lack of roots, because the word has fallen on rocky soil, the battle requires conversion. Facing temptations in prayer The most common yet most hidden temptation is our lack of faith. It expresses itself less by declared incredulity than by our actual preferences. When we begin to pray, a thousand labors or cares thought to be urgent vie for priority; once again, it is the moment of truth for the heart: What is its real love? Sometimes we turn to the Lord as a last resort, but do we really believe he is? Sometimes we enlist the Lord as an ally, but our heart remains presumptuous. In each case, our lack of faith reveals that we do not yet share in the disposition of a humble heart: "Apart from me, you can do nothing." Another temptation, to which presumption opens the gate, is acedia. The spiritual writers understand by this a form of depression due to lax ascetical practice, decreasing vigilance, carelessness of heart. "The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." The greater the height, the harder the fall. Painful as discouragement is, it is the reverse of presumption. The humble are not surprised by their distress; it leads them to trust more, to hold fast in constancy. The Catechism of the Catholic Church PRAYING FROM SUNDAY TO SUNDAY TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — I saw water flowing out of the temple; wherever the river flows, every living creature shall live (Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12). Psalm — The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High (Psalm 46). Second Reading — Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17). Gospel — Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up (John 2:13-22). To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one-to each according to his ability. Then he went away. After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.'"
