Invitation to the conference ‘Estates and landscapes’
Two-day conference at Gammel Estrup – the Manor Museum,
October 6th-7th 2015.
The Danish Centre for Manor Research is pleased to announce that the
international conference “European encounters. Estates and landscapes” will
take place at Gammel Estrup – the Manor Museum” October 6th-7th 2015.
The conference will be an upstart for the project ‘European encounters, Castles
and manors as European cultural heritage’, which aims to explore and highlight
regional variations and notable similarities in the history of castles and manors
across Europe from 1500-2000.
The central theme of the conference will be the manorial landscape. The manor
house and its gardens – the seat of the estate and the home of the family with a
highly visible display of wealth and power – has often been recognized as the
dominant feature of the estate. But management and designation also had a
profound impact on the agricultural or ‘natural’ parts of the estate. This
conference examines the physical, social and symbolic interaction of house,
gardens and estate lands in a historical perspective. It will explore similarities
and differences in regions across Europe and discuss how estate landscapes are
preserved and interpreted as cultural heritage today.
Crossing traditional boundaries between history, archaeology, art history,
architecture and heritage management, the conference programme presents
acclaimed scholars of castles, manors and estates in a European perspective.
An important aim of the conference is to further international transdisciplinary
partnerships between researchers and professionals in universities and
museums. The conference programme thus concludes with a workshop to
discuss research interest and outline themes for future cooperation.
Participants are invited to join the project ‘European encounters, Castles and
manors as European cultural heritage’, and to form a partnership with the aim
to shape an EU-application in culture, research and/or cultural heritage in
2016, and to prepare for an international conference in 2017. Research themes
may include the economic and sociological influence of manors in local
communities, elite consumption and international networks, and
transcultural impulses in art, architecture, fashion, science and politics
among the European landed gentry.

Dating back to the 14th century, Gammel Estrup is among the oldest and most renowned
manors in Denmark. For 600 years Gammel Estrup was passed down by inheritance within
a single aristocratic family until it was finally sold in 1926.
The majestic Renaissance building set in a baroque garden offers a unique insight into the
life of Danish aristocracy. The magnificent halls and drawing rooms have been restored and
redecorated to display interiors and furnishings from 1600-1900.
Gammel Estrup – the Manor Museum was established in 1930 as the first museum in
Denmark dedicated to the preservation of manors and the interpretation of culture and
lifestyles at the estate – the family, household and workers.
In 2004 The Danish Centre for Manor Research was established at Gammel Estrup as a
successful cooperation between Aarhus University, Aarhus School of Architecture, the
National Museum of Denmark and Gammel Estrup – the Manor Museum.
