Discover
Hurtigruten’s
Distinctive Style
For travellers who seek to experience the rhythm of
local life wherever they travel, Hurtigruten is the perfect
vehicle to get you deeper and closer into the heart of
the real Norway and remote destinations above the
Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle.
discover hurtigruten’s distinctive style
With ships that have been a vital link since 1893
between the remote and not so remote hamlets,
islands, towns and cities along Norway’s jagged
coastline, Hurtigruten is hands down the very best way
to experience the authenticity of Norway’s people,
culture, history, unsurpassed spectacular landscapes and
fascinating wildlife. For over 100 years essential goods
and services have been delivered to these communities
by Hurtigruten, and for some, inaccessible by road, their
only connection to the outside world.
In other parts of the world, Hurtigruten offers incredible
expedition voyages aboard their purpose-built
expedition vessel MS Fram, with adventures to the very
ends of our planet in the Arctic and Antarctica, plus
seasonal voyages along Western Europe and the British
Isles, all accompanied by an expert expedition team. A
selection of these exceptional expeditions are found on
pages 20-22.
Panorama Lounge – MS Trollfjord
Hurtigruten ships – Welcome Aboard
Whether you’re looking for a traditional seagoing ship or an
ultra-modern ship, Hurtigruten can accommodate. Hurtigruten
ships vary depending on their size and age. You can cruise on
21st century ships, boasting all the mod-cons with two-storey
panoramic lounges, or elect to step back in time aboard a
traditional vessel built in 1964, a favoured choice among many
travellers. Each ship differs in design and interior style, but they all
provide the same intimate up-close travel experience, with their
own informal Hurtigruten atmosphere.
Boasting a total of 11 ships sailing the Norwegian coastal treasures
on a year round basis means that no matter what time of year
you’re planning to travel to Norway, Hurtigruten has a departure
that perfectly suits your travel plans. Voyages begin either in
Bergen in Norway’s fjordland, or Kirkenes located high above
the Arctic Circle atop Europe near the Russian border, both of
which are easily accessible by air and/or scenic railway. No matter
whether you choose to take a 6, 7, 11 or full 12 day round-trip
voyage, you’ll visit no less than 34 fascinating ports of call, which
is surely one of the world’s most destination focused voyages.
4
discovertheworldcruising.com.au
Hurtigruten’s rich maritime history and unequalled knowledge of
this region ensures that you’ll get so close to the real Norway you’ll
feel as though you’ve become a part of each port you visit.
Hurtigruten also offers stimulating voyages to the remotest areas of
world above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle aboard
their purpose built expedition ship MS Fram. When MS Fram sails
between the two Poles, special expedition voyages around the
British Isles, Western Europe and across the Atlantic Ocean are
available. See pages 20-22 for a sampling of these voyages.
Life onboard Hurtigruten – a unique experience!
From the moment you step aboard, you’ll recognise that there’s a
sense of adventure from everyone around you. There’s a decidedly
informal, rather casual atmosphere onboard, so no need to
bring those jackets and ties and you’re in the company of likeminded people whose main focus is the destination. When you
sail with Hurtigruten you’ll take note immediately that you’ve not
travelled this far for the onboard entertainment you’d expect on a
conventional cruise, but rather for the spectacular visual feast that
Restaurant onboard
is continually appearing outside all around you as you gently glide
through some of the world’s most beautiful and untouched scenery.
Onboard the comfortable ships you’ll find inviting lounges, including
Hurtigruten’s signature panorama lounge designed to showcase
Norway’s awesome scenery, 24-hour cafe, bars, shop, internet access
and ample deck space from which to admire Norway’s natural beauty.
In between the scenic wonders you’re invited to dine in the ship’s
restaurant where your taste buds can anticipate mouth-watering
cuisine, prepared by innovative Norwegian chefs, of which all the
produce is sourced fresh and locally.
Specifically designed for optimum guest comfort and ability to
take you closer to Norway’s breathtaking coastline, Hurtigruten
ships are also working ships and for many passengers it is the
experience of seeing just how this essential service operates and
being a part of this community ‘lifeline’ that really appeals. Most
of your fellow passengers are onboard for the whole journey, but
you’ll also rub shoulders with warm and friendly locals who use the
ships for short journeys. Hurtigruten also takes its role in Norway
seriously by partnering with the National Geographic Centre of
Sustainable Destinations and practices Geotourism.

The Suite Life
Outside cabin
Your home on water – cabins & suites
Like Hurtigruten’s ships, you’ll find a wide range of comfortable
cabins onboard. They vary in size and location, sometimes within the
same cabin grade. As a general rule, outside cabins on the higher
decks have a picture window while the ones on the lower decks
have portholes. There are also inside (no window) cabins available.
Accommodation onboard ranges from suites with seating area
and private balcony, to standard outside and inside cabins. Due to
Hurtigruten’s varying range of cabins and ships, we highly recommend
you contact our Discover the World Cruising team or your travel agent
to ensure you select the cabin type that is right for you, or visit

Four Seasons – Four Reasons to experience
Norway any time of the year
It would be fair to say that Norway has encapsulating seasonal split
personalities.
Spring – Norway’s Arctic Awakening where you might
experience three seasons in just one week. The days lengthen
and the sun rejuvenates all life along the coast. Sugar-white snow
still covers much of the north, but in the south it’s an explosion
of green and colourful blooms, with wildlife and millions of birds
returning to breed.
Summer – Sees the days become ever longer and at the
Norway –
A Land
Of Contrasts
norway – a land of contrasts
From Scandinavian sleek Oslo to the chiselled fjords
that soar into the heavens, Norway has justly earned
a reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful
countries. This is a country that will leave a dramatic
impression, with geographical and natural marvels
stretching across its unique landscape above and below
the Arctic Circle that never fail to take your breath away!
Emerald green fjords with cascading waterfalls carved
by glaciers during the last Ice Age are undoubtedly
Norway’s top attractions, and the finest way to
experience these natural geographical wonders is
by combining a Hurtigruten voyage with the special
optional hotel and land extensions to create your own
Tailormade SeaTour.
summer solstice 24-hours daylight is experienced above the Arctic
Circle under the midnight sun. At its height some would say the
spectacular, towering fjords, waterfalls and cultural life are at their
peak. But wait, we’ve still got autumn and winter to come!
Autumn – Introduces you to a crisper air and the shores along
Norway’s incredible coastline seem to wrestle with the impending
winter by loudly expressing itself in rich reds, oranges and yellows,
which fill the mountainsides, hilltops and woods. As the days
shorten the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) may appear in the
night sky.
Winter – Is your time for adventure and Norway is an adventure
capital. The days are shorter which gives Mother Nature more time
for an impromptu dance of Northern Lights high above, and it’s the
time of year when you can take the reins of a dog sled team and
head out into the wilderness or drive your first snowmobile after
catching King Crab for dinner in a Viking chief’s house. Norway
becomes a white, winter wonderland...why not spend Christmas or
New Year’s here?
Wildlife often makes an appearance in Norway
where you may spot otters, badgers, moose, reindeer, and
mighty humpback and sperm whales. Look towards the sky and
be dazzled by hundreds of bird species including the soaring Sea
Eagle. In May every year, millions of migrating birds return to the
Arctic coast for breeding and nesting, at which time you’re likely
to see puffins, kittiwakes, guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, Arctic
Skuas and Northern Gannets.
North Cape – Reindeer
Modern and historic cities, towns and
settlements each vie for your attention up and down the
coast. From the beautiful city of Bergen, with its medieval streets
and German Hanseatic heritage (once the capital of Norway)
to traditional Sami settlements that are home to generations of
families and their reindeer, you will be immersed into Norway’s
culture and become friends with warm locals. Whether you’re
seeking to learn more about the legendary fiery Vikings or the
great Norwegian explorers, sample the array of museums and
galleries, visit Europe’s largest salt water aquarium, mush your own
dog sled team, shout “I’m King of the World” high above Europe’s
northernmost point, or hear a classical concert in an Arctic
Cathedral, Norway is sure to leave you transported.

character. A voyage of true nostalgia awaits you
aboard MS Lofoten, an ‘old lady’ of the sea built
in 1964. Built in 1983, the younger MS Vesteralen
provides you with a working ship experience
with a cheerful and bright personality. These
smaller ships carry between 100 and 516 guests.

Spectacular Train Journeys
Norway’s impressive landscape is the perfect accompaniment to a stunningly scenic train ride. So rugged and untamed is Norway, that to
travel across its 3,000 kilometres of tracks you’d need to pass through 775 tunnels and over 3,000 bridges. Norwegian trains can take you
to dizzying heights through mountains towering over crystal-clear fjords below, from one major city to another, or give you the opportunity
to stop in an area seemingly untouched by the hand of man. Norwegian trains offer second class and komfort class (separate car with more
space, tea and coffee) and sleeper compartments. Below are just a few examples of the most popular rail journeys.
Bergen Railway
Oslo to Bergen (or vice-versa)
(approx. 7 hours)
spectacular train journeys

We suggest: Break your Bergen Railway journey and ride one
of the world’s steepest railways, the Flåm Mountain Railway (see
Norway in a Nutshell tour on page 13 for details).
Dovre Railway
Trondheim to Oslo (or vice-versa)
(approx. 7 hours)
Following the Gaula River, seasonally teaming with salmon, you’ll
pass Oppdal’s beautiful mountain slopes and slip into Dovrefjell,
with its musk oxen, myths and trolls.
