STEWARDSHIP Traditionally at this time of year, Church of the Palms has conducted an annual stewardship campaign. As the Generosity Team requested, the Session has approved moving the 2015 Stewardship Campaign to the winter quarter. This will allow us to reach more people with the story of generosity. For those who would like to pledge now, you may do so in one of two ways; you may use the website http://www.churchofthepalms.org/pledge.html or use a 2015 pledge card now available in the back of the Sanctuary or in the church office. We encourage you to consider increasing your pledge for 2015. Church of the Palms’ 3rd Quarter Financial Report and Budget Review are available on the church website. Click on “Generosity” and then “Third Quarter Budget Review” and “Third Quarter 2014 Financial Report”. Communion Clean-up After the Lord’s Supper is served, there are dishes to do, just like at home. Disposable cups are used, but all of the communion ware must be washed and dried. It takes 20 – 30 minutes after a service, but of course it will go much faster if we have more helpers.Contact Yoko Spivey: [email protected], 544-2244. 6 Church of the Palms new member class TODAY • Chapel Reception Room 10:15 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. New Members Part 1 - COP Orientation: If you are ready to make a deeper commitment to the Church of the Palms family of faith or would just like to explore what that means, then this is the class for you! Therefore, the Mission: Equipping disciples for the service of Christ means: We connect people to Jesus Christ and one another, create opportunities for the Holy Spirit to transform us into Christ-centered, Bible-based, Spirit-led followers, and impact lives in our community and the world for Christ as God has gifted us. What is “EQUIPPING”? Equipping is training & preparing Jesus’ followers to - know him through Scripture and - follow him in the power of the Holy Spirit. Scriptural Basis for Equipping So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. -Ephesians 4:11-13 16 Church of the Palms Who is to be EQUIPPED? All of us! There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. -1 Corinthians 12:4-7 Equipping Model Serve Connect Community Company Congregation Committed Crew Invitation Discipleship Coaches Connection Centers Volunteer Coordinator Outreach Events Welcome Discipleship Life Skills Family Life Ministry Skills Leadership Home Work – School – Play Church Community World Small Group Class – Event Ministry Team Mission Effort Outreach Equip Lead Equipping Ministry - Opportunities for Involvement: PALMS University Classes Palms Life Small Groups Palms Men Presbyterian Women Leadership Development First Impressions Ministry New Members PALMS Essentials & SHAPE Discipleship Coaching Library and RightNow Media Equipping Ministry Director Carolyn Wilson and her Team Leaders continue to introduce new ideas to help everyone, from long-time members to those making their first visits. Armistice Day, recognized the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when World War I hostilities officially ceased. By 1954, two additional wars had occurred, World War II and Korea. In remembrance of those who served in those conflicts and those who served (and are serving) in conflicts since that time, Veterans Day is now celebrated. Today you can remember those who served and continue to serve our great country and show your Christian charity by packing and shipping one or more morale support boxes to our troops serving in Afghanistan. Boxes with complete instructions and addresses will be available following all services. SESSION UPDATE Check the church website for Session’s most recent update on the General Assembly issues, www.churchofthepalms.org. 22 Church of the Palms THINGS TO CONSIDER IN YOUR YEAR-END GIVING •Supporting the ministry of Church of the Palms is like investing in a lifechanging diversified charitable portfolio. Think of all we do: educate children and youth, feed the hungry, counsel the discouraged, tutor young students, inspire worshippers through exceptional music, preach the message of good news, support missionaries across the globe, and the list goes on. •If you have highly appreciated stocks, instead of selling the stocks and contributing the cash, contributing the stocks directly will usually provide for a larger tax deduction. Consult with your financial planner on tax advantages to your giving. •Your generosity in these remaining weeks of the year will allow us to address our severely underfunded capital reserve. We are blessed to have such fine facilities and we must be prepared to care for them in the years ahead with a hearty capital reserve. Coffee Sales Supporting our Nicaragua Mission Team Stop by our table under the tree each Sunday to purchase our Dona Katy Nicaraguan Coffee for only $10 a bag! Each purchase of this coffee supports Church of the Palms’ continued partnership with Vida Joven (Young Life) Nicaraguan Ministry. Stop by and hear about how your purchase will impact the lives of our students and allow many to hear the gospel in Nicaragua. It’s a win for everyone. www.churchofthepalms.org 23 calendar of events Sunday, NOVEMBER 9 8:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m. 8:45 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 11:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Chapel Worship Service Prayer Meeting Childcare The Garden Worship Service Traditional Worship Kid’s Worship Pre-K - Elementary Small Groups Middle - High School Small Groups Christians Under Construction New Life Class The Story: Creation to Resurrection A Time Out For Parents New Members - COP Orientation New Members - Join The Community Traditional Worship Praise & Glory Choir Rehearsal Monday, NOVEMBER 10 9:30 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 10:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m. 5:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Deborah Circle Priscilla Circle Rebekah Circle Joanna Circle Palm Singles Dinner Sounds of Glory Orchestra Rehearsal The Garden Leadership Team Cantori Choir Practice Chapel Chapel Study See Page 9 Campus Center Sanctuary 205-207 See Page 9 See Page 9 206 202 Chapel 109 Chapel Reception Room Chapel Reception Room Sanctuary Music & Arts Building Off Campus Chapel Reception Room 206 Off Campus Campus Center Music & Arts Building East Meeting Room Sanctuary Tuesday, NOVEMBER 11 7:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 5:00 p.m. 5:30 p.m. 5:30 p.m. 5:45 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Men’s Bible Study & Breakfast Off Campus Foundation Board Meeting 211 Library Mary Circle 210 Martha Circle Chapel Reception Room Women’s Prayer Group Chapel Narthex Tutoring Campus Center Generosity Team Meeting 206 SYV Prelude & Training Choir Rehearsal Music & Arts Building COP Nominating Committee West Meeting Room Creative SignersSanctuary Equipping Ministry Team Meeting 202 SYV Concert Choir Rehearsal Music & Arts Building Angel Tree Meeting East Meeting Room North Home Bible Study Off Campus Messiah RehearsalSanctuary Wednesday, NOVEMBER 12 7:30 a.m. 8:00 a.m. 9:15 a.m. 24 Men’s Bible Study Chapel Reception Room Samaritan Fundraiser Meeting 206 Memorial Garden Board Meeting 211 Library Church of the Palms calendar of events 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. 3:30 p.m. 3:30 p.m. 5:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. 5:30 p.m. 6:00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 7:15 p.m. Watercolor Wednesday Angel Tree Meeting Prayer Shawl Group Administration & Finance Committee Congregational Prayer Time Palms Buffet & Grille Equipping Ministry Team Meeting Jubilee Handbell Choir Rehearsal Experiencing God PALMS Essentials Small Group The Family of Jesus Remembering Your Story Youth Group (Middle & High School) Chancel Choir Rehearsal Chapel Reception Room Chapel Reception Room Chapel Narthex 206 Chapel Campus Center East Meeting Room Sanctuary Chapel Reception Room East Meeting Room 206 202 208, 209, 210 Music & Arts Building Thursday, NOVEMBER 13 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. 5:30 p.m. 6:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Claudia Circle Chapel Reception Room Tutoring Campus Center Beginning Creative Signers Class Music & Arts Building The Garden Worship Team Meeting East Meeting Room The Garden Worship Band Rehearsal Campus Center Palms Men Leadership Team Chapel Reception Room Friday, NOVEMBER 14 9:30 a.m. 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Friday Morning Bible Study Grief Support Group Palms String Ensemble An Evening of Jazz - Richard Drexler South Home Bible Study Saturday, NOVEMBER 15 9:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. SYV Chamber Choir Rehearsal Palms “Got Talent” Rehearsal Sunday, NOVEMBER 16 8:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m. 8:45 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 11:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Chapel Worship Service Prayer Meeting Childcare The Garden Worship Service Traditional Worship Kid’s Worship Pre-K - Elementary Small Groups Middle - High School Small Groups Christians Under Construction New Life Class The Story: Creation to Resurrection A Time Out For Parents Traditional Worship Church of the Palms Book Group www.churchofthepalms.org 202 Chapel Reception Room Music & Arts Building Sanctuary Off Campus Music & Arts Building Campus Center Chapel Chapel Study See Page 9 Campus Center Sanctuary 205-207 See Page 9 See Page 9 206 202 Chapel 109 Sanctuary Chapel Reception Room 25 are you new here? Every 2nd Sunday at 10:15 a.m. in the Chapel Reception Room God’s Story Your Story November 9, 2014 For the week of November 9, 2104 Devotion: Use this resource at home to guide your household’s daily devotions. You can do this alone, as a couple, as a family; in the morning, during the day, or at night. Find a routine that works best for you. Pray: Light a candle and open your devotion time with a prayer. God of mercy, you have transformed us by your promises of deliverance time and time again. Teach us to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with you, God, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Reflect: Reflect on the key verse from Sunday’s reading. He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 Study: Study the reading and consider the background. At the time of Micah, the kingdom of Israel was divided. Some lived in the Northern Kingdom, Israel, with its capital of Samaria. Others lived in the Southern Kingdom, Judah, with its capital of Jerusalem. Micah spoke to Israel shortly before Samaria was conquered by Assyria, which effectively ended the kingdom of Israel (the Northern Kingdom). A few hundred years later, Babylon would conquer both Assyria and Judah, putting God’s people in exile. God’s promise through Micah proclaimed that out of Bethlehem in Judah one would come to save the people from exile and ruin. Through Micah’s words, God reminded the people that God did not desire burnt offerings or sacrifices. Instead, God desired the people to live with justice, kindness, and humility. Follow the book of Micah, as the prophet proclaims both judgment and the promise of restoration. Sunday, Micah 5:2-4; 6:6-8, Micah Monday, Micah 1, Judgment and Doom Tuesday, Micah 2, Social Evils Denounced Wednesday, Micah 3, Wicked Rulers Thursday, Micah 4, Peace and Promise Friday, Micah 5:1, 5-15; 6:1-5, 9-16, God’s Challenge Saturday, Micah 7, Prophecy of Restoration What was God doing here? How were the people’s actions punished or rewarded? Connect: Connect in conversation with others in your household. Discuss the following questions, or simply check in with “Highs” and “Lows.” What was a high point of your day? What was a low point? How are the actions of your community/culture punished or rewarded? How can you influence your community’s behaviors so that they more closely match those God’s ways? How do you act with justice, kindness, and humility? What can you do this week to make improvements in those areas of your life? Do: By acting on what we learn, we make God’s word come alive. Do the following activity this week. Perform an act of justice, kindness, or humility for a stranger at least once each day this week. Make a note of how your behavior shapes your attitude. Bless: Close your devotion with a blessing. God on high, inspire justice, kindness and humility in all who hear your word this day. Amen. Copyright © 2014 Clergy Stuff. Used with Permission.
