Behind the Scenes at NLPC - Church Staff Dennis Heasty Financial Assistant Dennis returned to Florida in 2009 after living in North Carolina for ten years. Dennis met Charlotte in 1996 in Brandon and created a blended family of five children that has grown by three grandchildren in the last five years. Upon Dennis’ move to Florida, he was a Nursing Home Administrator for Brookdale Senior Living and was assigned to Freedom Pointe Health Center, which he was responsible for opening in 2009. Dennis retired from another Brookdale Community, Lake Port Square, in January, 2014. Shortly after, he found out about a job at North Lake in the financial department and could not pass up the opportunity to apply and was lucky enough to be chosen as the candidate. He started in June, 2014. Charlotte has taught at The Villages Charter School since returning to Florida and has taught second grade and fifth grade. She is also involved in the NLPC Healing Ministry, the Prayer Ministry and teaches at LOGOs here at North Lake. Dennis and Charlotte joined North Lake Presbyterian in 2009 and now reside in Stonecrest in Summerfield, FL. Page 2 Good Newsletter The Pastor’s Letter Parkinson’s Support Group November 2014 Dear North Lake Family and Friends: Back in November, nearly a year ago, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. I asked my doctor if this was going to kill me—he said, “No, it’s something you live with.” Over the past year, I’ve learned that 3 percent of the population has Parkinson’s or some related neurological disease. The secret to “living” with Parkinson’s is to remain mentally and physically active. Read up on the disease, stay active (I have taken therapy classes: “Big and Loud” to strengthen my voice, “balance therapy” so I don’t fall down, and being part of a support group.) There are now three such groups: The “Fight Group” in The Villages, but open to all. The Tri-County Parkinson’s Support Group (meets at North Lake) and North Lake’s Parkinson’s Support Group (meets the first and third Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. in my conference room). Our group focuses on emotional support, awareness of latest medical development, prayer and spiritual support. Those who have Parkinson’s and their care-givers and families are welcome. If you want to know more, call me or Janice at 753-8484. PASTOR DENNY MLK Commemorative Breakfast The 11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Breakfast is scheduled on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Savannah Center, 1545 Buena Vista Boulevard in The Villages. Keynote Speaker is Dr. Robert Perry, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of The Villages. Cost is $13.00 per person. Ticket contact: Dr. Robert Kimbrough (259-8623). Notice Because of the holidays, submittal deadline for the Dec. Good Newsletter is November 3rd. Submit your articles to: [email protected]. For the latest information at NLPC, check out our website: www. northlakepc.org Page 3 November 2014 Letter from Associate Pastor Michael Smith Hello Saints, A short note here to give you an update on my recent ministry activities as I am currently in Ohio officiating two weddings, my daughter Tierany being one of them. A group of NLPC Saints went to explore the K-5 ministry at, "Church @ the Springs" in Ocala recently. It was a learning curve and we gleaned some great ideas on enhancing our current ministry. Our plan is to begin meeting in November with our team on goals, cost and implementation guidelines for a 2015 fall role out. If you have interest in an overview of our trip, email me ([email protected]). You should have received by now an email on the new "Life @ North Lake” Discipleship brochure. Please take a few minutes to check off the classes you have already taken and schedule your next class (they begin in November). The goal of this educational pathway is to help you have a closer walk with Jesus Christ. Remember, life is not a race but a journey that will continue throughout eternity with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are continuing to pray and seek the Lord on guidance for our Teen ministry. The search for a new youth pastor has been challenging. God will provide us with direction, as we currently have a great group of volunteers (elders, staff, church members) who currently minister to our teens. Finally I will leave you with a question, "What Has Forgiveness Cost You" in your life time? This will be the sermon topic when I preach on November 9th. Love your church family! All for Jesus, Pastor Mike Little Blessings Christmas Program The Little Blessings children would like to extend an invitation to you to join them for their special presentation of “The Grinch Who Found the Perfect Gift.” Please join them on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at 4:30 p.m. in the NLPC Fellowship Hall for a show you won’t want to miss! November 2014 Little Blessings New s - Linda Brown Gobble, gobble, turkey time is almost upon us. This is the time of year for so many traditions at home but also at Little Blessings as well. Our kids love the preparation and anticipation of the holidays. Our annual Thanksgiving Feast will be on November 20 in the NLPC Fellowship Hall. All students in our three year old and VPK classes and their families will gather together to enjoy our “feast” of pizza, veggies, apple juice and desserts. No, it is not traditional food, but it is food that our kids will eat and enjoy! For the event, the children make their own placemats, table decorations, and costumes. Some classes are the native Americans and the others are the Pilgrims. They are so precious as they make their way across the driveway to the Fellowship Hall. It is quite a sight to see. Last year a singing group that was practicing here at church got caught up in the middle of the procession. One lady came up to me and said that seeing the kids was the highlight of her Thanksgiving season. Our kids are truly a gift to be treasured and enjoyed by all. Remember to keep our students and their families in your prayers. Many struggle daily to provide the basic needs in life. Happy Thanksgiving to all from all of us at Little Blessings! Through your generosity last year, the kitchen looked like Santa’s Workshop! Last year, our clients were amazed and happy with the generosity of the congregation; there were so many heartfelt thank you notes and calls. One example…a recipient lost her spouse in 2013 and was not going to celebrate Christmas, your kindness changed her mind. What an amazing thing! Please return the wrapped gift(s) with the tag(s) attached to the kitchen (7:00 a.m. Noon, Monday through Friday, until December 15th). November 2014 Page 11 Camp SoZo - Becky Bros Camp SoZo is a beautiful camp for the children of the Ocala Forest to use during the summer months. Some come for a week at a time and others come for the whole summer. The camp is free and runs through the donations of many food stores and volunteers. Youth Groups from various churches and organizations volunteer weekly and many come from out of state. The camp runs on a daily basis under the guidance of 9 people and volunteers. The camp is also used throughout the year by other organizations, such as the Boy Scouts. During a tour, we were driven through a very small area of the forest and our guide told us stories about the people in each of the homes. Some of the stories made us laugh others made us want to cry, such as the home of a 10 year old girl who had just given birth. Some of the things we noticed during the tour were makeshift showers and flashlights used for lighting. not visit here on your own. There are approximately 48,000 people living in the Ocala Forest. This number doesn't include people living in tents, etc., but does include the approximately 7,000 children. Much of the attention is now focused on the children since this is where changes will be made - the next generation. We learned about the school situation and being bused out to the schools. Surprisingly this is where they learn they are poor, when they see other children for the first time. We also learned about a mentoring center that will be opening in Weirsdale as soon as Lake and Marion Counties work together to make this happen. There will be between 135 - 145 children going there each school day for help along with an after school snack or full meal. Hopefully, there will be opportunities available for you to help there in the future. Many of the adults try to find employment, however, transportation is a problem and the minimum wages earned make it hard for them to make ends meet. We learned the difference between the “Rainbow People,” who are here for two months of the year with camp permits (these are the ones who panhandle), and the “Forest People” who are the fulltime residents. These people keep very much to themselves and it is highly recommended that you Men’s Breakfast The Men’s Fellowship Breakfast meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 7:30 a.m. Please contact Elmer Wagner (753-0449) or ([email protected]) for information on where they will be meeting. Before long you will be seeing lights, trees and other seasonal decoration adorning our church facilities. With that in mind, be on the look out for our annual Angel Tree - Give Kids a Christmas Program. The Angel Tree began here at North Lake in 1998 with 30 angels on it. This year we expect to have over 200 angels to choose from. The Angel Tree is a program to provide gifts or needed items to children in our local vicinity. We provide gifts for children from the Villages Elementary and Stanton Weirsdale Elementary schools as well as local referrals from needy clients. The families are asked to list an item that their child would like to receive or something that is needed - such as shoes, coats, winter clothing, etc. Shop for and buy the suggested gift(s) or one(s) of their own choosing. Return the unwrapped gift(s) with the tag securely taped or tied on the item back under the tree. Tags will be available beginning November 21st and all gifts must be returned no later than December 12th. Page 15 Prison Ministry New s The NLPC ministers as part of the Crossroads Bible Institute, an International comprehensive Christian Ministry. Along with other local Churches our role is to maintain personal contact with inmates through the mail. As a former Chaplain, I know the impact of letters that share both the Gospel and supportive fellowship. We share Christ's concerns "...For the least of these". Pease pray about joining your brothers and sisters in a rewarding ministry. For further information please call Ed at 4301062 or speak to any member. It Was A Great Party! On Friday, October 10, the choir celebrated a great occasion. We had a pitch-indinner; shared a fun “sing-along” with the Contemporary Praise Band; played some games and generally had a good time. The Traditional Choir is excited to be back after our August vacation. We look forward to enriching the church service with our anthems, our joy and enthusiasm. Be prepared to love our music and join with us as we praise God with song. Blessings from the Choir Just join us on Thursdays -- 8:30 a.m. is the time; We'll have such fun and it won't cost a dime. Comfortable clothes, your weights and your water; We'll help you pursue, so you'll never falter. Come join in the fun and enjoy the great cheer. You'll look really good by this time next year!!!
