The Choristers wrapped up a very successful and well attended Variety Show on September 17th. First up is “Memories of the War Years” on Sunday November 2nd. It’s a musical tribute and this years show will feature a tribute to the 100th anniversary of World War One. A number of talented locals will be featured in the musical show which will run from 2 to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available at the Filberg Office. Next up, on Wednesday November 5th is the Christmas Bazaar and Luncheon Starting at 10:30 in the Conference Hall it will provide us with an opportunity to help Santa get a head start on Christmas shopping. You’ll find a great assortment of Christmas goodies for giving.....something for everyone here. The luncheon is from 11 to I and tickets for the luncheon will be available at the door. And then on Wednesday November 12th it’s our very own Evergreen Club Second Stage Players presenting “Old Wine In New Bottles”. Jackie Simon was our “Volunteer of the Month” in October and we would like to add our congratulations and thanks for her contributions. She is a very involved lady at the Centre and a great article about her was in the October newsletter. Don’t forget that you all have the opportunity to nominate someone whom you think is a special volunteer. You can pick up a form from Deanne, our Volunteer Coordinator. I would like to mention the Senior Living Magazine once again. It is an excellent read for our members for all kinds of reasons. It is available in the lounge as a freebee and it is well worth picking up. The October issue had some excellent articles for the “cruisers” amongst us and I know there are many amongst us. Once again “Bon Voyage” to any members heading south to warmer climates for the winter...the rest of us will have to remain here in the rain but we do wish you well. That’s all for now......and remember to “Have A Great Day”........unless you’ve made other plans....gk Cycling Card Lady Come for a nice bicycle trip with the Evergreen Seniors. We leave the Filberg Centre at 10:00 a.m. each Monday and Wednesday, weather permitting. We go on the back roads and trails for about 2 – 2 ½ hours so we get back to the Centre for a nice lunch. We are also planning a talk on the Picasa Uploader, a convenient way to share photos with others. Our one photo shoot took us to Paradise Meadows at Mount Washington. We have been pleased to welcome new members to our meetings and we continue to grow, but we aren’t too big to keep the more intimate atmosphere we currently enjoy. Robin Volunteers work hard to make Friday Night Dances friendly, fun and something to look forward to each week. The people who come on a regular basis already know what a good time is had by all. We look forward to happy faces, and friendliness all rolled into one. There isn’t a ‘teacher’ in the club, rather we encourage members to share their knowledge with other owners of these wonderful devices. The iPad Club has been very successful so the idea of adding a club for iPhone users seemed natural. If you own an iPhone (they’re the ones with the Apple on the back) and you’d like to learn more or share what you know about its wonderful capabilities please come to the information meeting on November 25th and we’ll see if there is enough interest to form a club. Ginny Greene 250-334-4334 Have you ever wondered where some of our names came from? This month I’ll tell you about the employment that gave us the name TURNER. You’ll have to read about our upcoming meeting first though. Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 20th at 1 pm in the Soroptomist Room. Now that fall is here I imagine everyone is getting back to their favorite hobbies and genealogy is ours. We will be having an around-the-table discussion. This month being November we usually discuss our family members who participated in the Armed Forces so bring any remembrances, research, medals, books, etc. Join us in the cafeteria for lunch, a group of us meet at noon for a visit before proceeding upstairs. Now, back to the name TURNER. The occupation is pretty obvious as it was a person who worked with wood or even metal on a lathe. It also referred to a potter who finished the pottery pieces before firing in the kiln. Ethel 250-335-1504 Book Club At the October meeting two books generated the most discussion. One was an older book about the plight of American Indians, “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”, by Dee Brown. The themes in this book were compared to the current issues affecting First Nations people. The second is a new book, “Confessions of A Greenpeace Dropout”, by Patrick Moore. Dr. Moore explains in this book why, 15 years after cofounding Greenpeace, he left the organization to establish a more sensible, science based approach to environmentalism. He outlines his years in the organization, and sheds light on controversial topics such as climate change, genetic engineering, etc. The member who presented this book mentioned that she now views all news reports about these subjects differently. The meetings are the FIRST MONDAY of the month at 1:00p.m. in the Soroptimist Lounge. There are no specific books assigned, so come and tell us about interesting books you have read. Everyone comes away with a list of good books! Susan Drama Club Well “Old Wine in New Bottles” is only days away from entertaining a sell out crowd, so you can enjoy a good laugh or two. It will be our best production yet and we are thrilled how well it is coming along. Thanks in advance to all the cast and crew for a job well done and to our writer Betty Annand and director Bill Walton for their excellent efforts. We will be taking a well deserved break before we start looking for our next production. I am sure it will be a challenge for us all and an opportunity to entertain the seniors of the Comox Valley once more. It was a natural progression from being an active Soroptimist Club member (since 1976). The upstairs Florence Filberg board room came from the Soroptimist Club’s donations; an organization working to improve the lives of women and children through social and economic empowerment. Freida volunteers with the Comox Valley Transition Society’s Lilli House. She helps with shopping, storing and packaging ‘Soropti Pacs’ for the women and children providing them with the essentials they need. Freida has volunteered at the Evergreen Club for countless years as a kitchen caller. She looks after the first week of each month making sure the spare list has been called and any spare positions filled. While some weeks can be easy, other times the power of persuasion; patience and determination can be of the essence! I think we’ll give Freida November off, as a thank you, (that’s an inside joke as her week happens only to include one Saturday by the nature of the calendar). Freida was a member of the Meet & Greet Singles Club. Seven years ago through an interest signup sheet there, she was one of the first in the Evergreen Book Club. “I love to read. It’s my passion! I give a book about 100 pages and then decide whether to finish it or not. I’m a book addict.” says Freida. The book club doesn’t read the same book; members read a wide range of subjects and then talk about them. Colleen Nielsen says, “Freida is very generous with her books. Such a kind, thoughtful person with a good sense of humour. She always sends funny unique cards to her friends.” Freida also volunteers at the Legion making the calls out for any Poppy Tribute Services. When asked why she loves to volunteer, she simply states,” I enjoy meeting people and doing something with my time.” Her time is also shared with her pet cat Daisy. She loves puzzles, Scrabble, theatre, and the bus trips through the club. Thank you Freida! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES A Message from Deanne, your Volunteer Coordinator Attention all muffin heroes, kitchen hosts/hostesses, and kitchen callers... Please sign up to attend our next kitchen volunteer meeting Thursday November 27th at 2pm in The Evergreen Lounge. The sign up sheet will be located on the fridge door.
