President’s Message
Gord Kruger, Evergreen Club President
Once again...”Greetings Everyone”........seems that the winter chill and winter rains are now part of our life for the next
several months. After that amazing summer and fall the adjustment to the new climate will seem difficult but I guess that’s life
in the Comox Valley.

Things are moving right along at the Filberg Centre and our various clubs and
organizations are well on their way to another busy season. The Choristers
wrapped up a very successful and well attended Variety Show on September
17th. Everyone had a great afternoon of song and good cheer with memorable
performances by our own very talented members....well done folks.
There
are several wonderful functions upcoming in November. First up is “Memories
of the War Years” on Sunday November 2nd. It’s a musical tribute and this years
show will feature a tribute to the 100th anniversary of World War One. A number
of talented locals will be featured in the musical show which will run from 2 to
4:30 pm. Tickets are available at the Filberg Office. Next up, on Wednesday
November 5th is the Christmas Bazaar and Luncheon Starting at 10:30 in the
Conference Hall it will provide us with an opportunity to help Santa get a head
start on Christmas shopping. You’ll find a great assortment of Christmas goodies
for giving.....something for everyone here. The luncheon is from 11 to I and tickets
for the luncheon will be available at the door. And then on Wednesday November
12th it’s our very own Evergreen Club Second Stage Players presenting “Old
Wine In New Bottles”. There is a matinee performance at 1:30 and an evening
show at 7 in the Conference Hall.
2015 Membership renewals and sales are now on. Current members can renew
for $21 plus tax until December 31st. Please drop into the front office and renew
at your earliest convenience.....it’s $26.plus tax after that date. Flu clinics will
also be available in November on Monday the 3rd and Monday the 17th from 9
till 11:30. A full schedule of clinics will be available at the office in November.
Jackie Simon was our “Volunteer of the Month” in October and we would like to
add our congratulations and thanks for her contributions. She is a very involved
lady at the Centre and a great article about her was in the October newsletter.
Don’t forget that you all have the opportunity to nominate someone whom you
think is a special volunteer. You can pick up a form from Deanne, our Volunteer
Coordinator.
I would like to mention the Senior Living Magazine once again. It is an excellent
read for our members for all kinds of reasons. It is available in the lounge as a
freebee and it is well worth picking up. The October issue had some excellent
articles for the “cruisers” amongst us and I know there are many amongst us.
Once again “Bon Voyage” to any members heading south to warmer climates
for the winter...the rest of us will have to remain here in the rain but we do wish
you well. That’s all for now......and remember to “Have A Great Day”........unless
you’ve made other plans....gk

Golf
Our final banquet and tournament was held on September 26 and there were 49 players - 20 players teed off at 12 noon and
were able to finish before the rain started . The remainder teed off at 2pm and I’m afraid got a little wet. Two teams came in
with the same score of 31, a count back from 18 was done. Derek Harris and Len Luoma were proclaimed the winners with
second place going to Merv Diesing and Neil Harrison. Ladies KP was won by Anna Robitaille and the men’s KP by John
Enns. Well done everyone. The election of officers was sweet and simple again this year as the current Executive agreed to
stay on for another year.
We would like to thank all the companies and individuals that contributed prizes for our tournament. They are as follows:
Andrew Sheret Ltd. Bartell and Gibson, Brigadoon, Canadian Tire, Chances Casino, Cumberland Ready Mix, Costco, E.B.
Horsman, Emterra Environmental, EECOL, End of the Roll., Eagle FM, Fire Shop, First Insurance, Goat FM, Hyundai, Home
Depot, Home Hardware, Hyland Ready Mix, Investors Syndicate, Island Insurance, Longlands, National Bank Financial,
Pilon Rental, Quality Foods, Raylec, Slegg Lumber, Shaw, Volkswagen and Westburne. The following golf courses donated
golf passes: Arrowsmith, Comox Golf Course, Crown Isle, Glacier Greens, Longlands, Mulligans, Saratoga and Sunnydale.
There were also items donated by some of our club members namely, Sharron McWillis, Joan Hicks and Neil Harrison.
We would like to thank the management and staff at Longlands for being so easy to work with throughout this past year,
for all the prizes for our month end tournament, and for the tea and cookies. I, would like to thank all those who so readily
offered to help with the making up of the flights, thank you. Peter and I would also like to thank you for the gift certificate to a
local restaurant ( that’s one meal I won’t have to cook) it’s very kind of you all and much appreciated. So, now all there is left
to say is - hope you winter well and see you next April.

Hope everyone survived “Trick or

enjoyed. November will be our

our freedom. The songs are great
anytime we sing them. Can’t believe
where the year has gone and we’ll
soon be getting ready to sing our
wonderful Christmas songs. We meet
every Friday 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. in the

Friday Night Dances
There was a very positive response to
the Lounge Wall photographs where
the topic was Macro. The winner you
chose was the lovely photograph of
the dragonfly. Our next wall display will
feature Black and White photographs.
Our education topics included a talk on
Lightroom, a photo editing program.
As a spin off from that talk the club
will be holding an extra session on
Lightroom that will take place at noon
in the Soroptimist Lounge before the
regular meeting that starts at 1.00
p.m. We also had a session on “The
Cloud” that mysterious place where
photos and date can be are stored,
somewhere, who knows where? We
are also planning a talk on the Picasa
Uploader, a convenient way to share
photos with others. Our one photo
shoot took us to Paradise Meadows
at Mount Washington. We have been
pleased to welcome new members
to our meetings and we continue to
grow, but we aren’t too big to keep
the more intimate atmosphere we
currently enjoy.
Robin
Volunteers work hard to make
Friday Night Dances friendly, fun
and something to look forward to
each week. The people who come
on a regular basis already know
what a good time is had by all. We
look forward to happy faces, and
friendliness all rolled into one.
The month of October was a special
Oktoberfest theme and of course
Halloween falling on a Friday - what
more fun dancing could we ask for.
The month of November gives us
only two dance events the 14th with
Reiss Vink and his accordian. Reiss is
a well recognized and accomplished
accordionist. He covers all aspects of
dance music and is well prepared to
meet your dance needs.
November 28th brings us Crosstown
Express. Bring your friends, wear your
country duds and enjoy a fun filled
evening.

Sorry for the incorrect dates the last
time. Had the wrong calendar out....
that’s my excuse, and I am sticking to
it!! We are having great fun singing
and playing. It is amazing how good
we sound. Terry comes up with some
great music for us.
Our Club meets the second and
fourth Tuesday of each month. We
start each meet with songs that have
simple chords. They are all songs we
remember from our past. During the
last hour we try tunes that have a bit
more complicated chord ....get much
easier after a bit of practice. Our
music is sent to us via email, and we
can practice as much as we want at
home.
We would love to have you come
and join us. The Club has for loan, a

Meet & Greet Singles Club
On Wednesday October 1st, the Meet
& Greet Singles met in the Rotary Hall.
The meeting started with a rousing
sing song, led by Donna at the piano.
Patricia introduced the guest speaker,
Pastor Michelle Elsasser. She spoke
of a few of the many ways in which
the Salvation Army assists people in
various sorts of trouble. On Saturday
the 6th, despite the threatening rain,
we walked the AirPark. On Monday
the 22nd, we met for lunch at Boston
Pizza. The ferry trip to Powell River
was great. The ladies there always
put on a good show for us. And the
second semi annual birthday party
was fun! Don’t forget to renew your
membership!

iPhone Tips & Tricks
Tuesday, November 25th, 1:30 2:45 p.m. Soroptimist Lounge
There will be an information meeting in
the Soroptimist Lounge to discuss the
possibility of forming an iPhone club similar to the iPad Club that has been
meeting for a couple of years. There
isn’t a ‘teacher’ in the club, rather
we encourage members to share
their knowledge with other owners
of these wonderful devices. The iPad
Club has been very successful so the
idea of adding a club for iPhone users
seemed natural.
If you own an iPhone (they’re the
ones with the Apple on the back)
and you’d like to learn more or share
what you know about its wonderful
capabilities please come to the
information meeting on November
25th and we’ll see if there is enough
interest to form a club.

Have you ever wondered where some
of our names came from? This month
I’ll tell you about the employment that
gave us the name TURNER. You’ll
have to read about our upcoming
meeting first though.
Our next meeting will be held on
Thursday, November 20th at 1 pm in
the Soroptomist Room. Now that fall
is here I imagine everyone is getting
back to their favorite hobbies and
genealogy is ours. We will be having
an around-the-table discussion. This
month being November we usually
discuss our family members who
participated in the Armed Forces so
bring any remembrances, research,
medals, books, etc.
Join us in the cafeteria for lunch, a
group of us meet at noon for a visit
before proceeding upstairs.
Now, back to the name TURNER. The
occupation is pretty obvious as it was
a person who worked with wood or
even metal on a lathe. It also referred
to a potter who finished the pottery
pieces before firing in the kiln.
Ethel 250-335-1504
Book Club
At the October meeting two books
generated the most discussion.
One was an older book about the
plight of American Indians, “Bury
My Heart at Wounded Knee”, by
Dee Brown. The themes in this book
were compared to the current issues
affecting First Nations people. The
second is a new book, “Confessions
of A Greenpeace Dropout”, by
Patrick Moore. Dr. Moore explains
in this book why, 15 years after cofounding Greenpeace, he left the
organization to establish a more
sensible, science based approach
to environmentalism. He outlines his
years in the organization, and sheds
light on controversial topics such as
climate change, genetic engineering,
etc. The member who presented this
book mentioned that she now views
all news reports about these subjects
differently.
The meetings are the FIRST MONDAY
of the month at 1:00p.m. in the
Soroptimist Lounge. There are no
specific books assigned, so come
and tell us about interesting books
you have read.
Everyone comes away with a list of
good books!

Well “Old Wine in New Bottles” is only
days away from entertaining a sell out
crowd, so you can enjoy a good laugh
or two. It will be our best production
yet and we are thrilled how well it is
coming along. Thanks in advance
to all the cast and crew for a job well
done and to our writer Betty Annand
and director Bill Walton for their
excellent efforts. We will be taking a
well deserved break before we start
looking for our next production. I am
sure it will be a challenge for us all and
an opportunity to entertain the seniors
of the Comox Valley once more. Thank
you one & all for your support of the
Second Stage Drama Club, without
you our efforts would be wasted.

The Happy Gang is playing in the
Conference Room at the Filberg every
Tuesday from 10 to noon.
Come and enjoy the music, and fun,
as Steve tells of his knowledge about
songs and singers.
Our numbers are a little down, as we
await some of our members return
from surgery. Speedy recovery to Bob
Gobel and Barbara Krack. We miss
you guys. Take care, old age isn’t for
sissys, be strong.
Liza ( busylizy@shaw .ca )
The Winter Snooker League started
without a hitch and there’s six teams
with four players on each team. The
schedule is out and each team will
play a total of 30 days with each
person playing twice on each date.
The teams appear to be relatively
matched and we have a number of
spares to help out when the regulars
can’t play. If anyone wants to spare
they can reach me at 778-420-2551.

VOLUNTEERS
VOLUNTEER
OF THE MONTH
Frieda Lawson
Freida, our kind hearted volunteer of the
month, joined our Evergreen Club back
in 1978. It was a natural progression from
being an active Soroptimist Club member (since 1976). The upstairs Florence
Filberg board room came from the Soroptimist Club’s donations; an organization
working to improve the lives of women and children through social and economic
empowerment. Freida volunteers with the Comox Valley Transition Society’s Lilli
House. She helps with shopping, storing and packaging ‘Soropti Pacs’ for the
women and children providing them with the essentials they need. Freida has
volunteered at the Evergreen Club for countless years as a kitchen caller. She
looks after the first week of each month making sure the spare list has been called
and any spare positions filled. While some weeks can be easy, other times the
power of persuasion; patience and determination can be of the essence! I think
we’ll give Freida November off, as a thank you, (that’s an inside joke as her week
happens only to include one Saturday by the nature of the calendar). Freida was
a member of the Meet & Greet Singles Club. Seven years ago through an interest
signup sheet there, she was one of the first in the Evergreen Book Club. “I love to
read. It’s my passion! I give a book about 100 pages and then decide whether to
finish it or not. I’m a book addict.” says Freida. The book club doesn’t read the
same book; members read a wide range of subjects and then talk about them.
Colleen Nielsen says, “Freida is very generous with her books. Such a kind,
thoughtful person with a good sense of humour. She always sends funny unique
cards to her friends.” Freida also volunteers at the Legion making the calls out for
any Poppy Tribute Services. When asked why she loves to volunteer, she simply
states,” I enjoy meeting people and doing something with my time.” Her time is
also shared with her pet cat Daisy. She loves puzzles, Scrabble, theatre, and the
bus trips through the club. Thank you Freida!
