It is an impressive campus situated in a placid surrounding at the foot hills of the Nilgiris Mountains encompassing a sprawling area of 176 acres with a built-up area of more than 16 lakhs square feet and presenting a consummate illustration of corporate contribution to society. BIT is a well designed campus with state-of-the-art facilities. It is an ideal, conducive, educational sanctuary where one can fully focus on studies and attain academic goals. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is well equipped with qualified and experienced faculty members with Industrial and Research background. The Department has a team of 47 dedicated members of faculty, 10 with Ph.D. and 18 pursuing Ph.D. programmes. The department offers three UG programmes (B.E. Mechanical, Mechatronics & Automobile Engg.), three PG programmes (M.E. Engg. Design, CAD/CAM & Industrial Safety Engineering) and Ph.D. Programmes. B.E. Mechanical Engineering programme have been accredited by NBA for 5 years. The Department has organized more than 65 short term training programmes, FDPs and conferences in association with AICTE, ISTE, DRDO, CSIR and TNSCST. Twelve research projects funded by AICTE, DSIR, RPS and DRDO with total worth of 119 Lakhs have been taken up by the department. The department is equipped with centre for Industrial Automation and Mechatronics sponsored by FESTO, Germany. The BIT has a team of 367 dedicated members of faculty, 64 with Ph.D. and 127 pursuing Ph.D. programmes. It is currently offering 12 UG and 13 PG programmes and Ph.D. programmes in Engineering, Technology, Software Engineering and Management. The institute has been approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The institute has been accredited by the Natioanl Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with A Grade. It is also an ISO 9001:2008 certified institution. The BIT had won the Mindlogix Infratec Limited Silver Medal for the Best Overall Industrylinked Engineering College Award, the first ever survey undertaken jointly by AICTE and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the year 2012. The institute had also won the National Award for the Best Private Engineering College for the year 2012 from ISTE, New Delhi. PREAMBLE Models describe our beliefs about how the world functions. In mathematical modelling, we translate those beliefs into the language of mathematics. There is a large element of compromise in mathematical modelling. The majority of interacting systems in the real world are far too complicated to model in their entirety. The two divisions of mathematical modeling namely deterministic / stochastic and mechanistic / empirical represent extremes of a range of model types. In between lay a whole spectrum of model types. It is essential to develop regression based mathematical models in many engineering research applications. It facilitates test the effect of changes in a system, decision making, etc. TOPICS TO BE COVERED Exponential Reciprocal Squared Reciprocal Powers Reciprocal Powers and Exponent Hybrid Discrete Model o Exponential with a Valid Range Hybrid Model o Combined Reciprocal Powers and Exponential Function o Combined Linear and Exponential Function o B-Spline Curve Polynomial Model o Cubic Polynomial o Fourth Order Polynomial o Fifth Order Polynomial Response Surface Methodology Taguchi Techniques Few case study applications Workshop Methodology Theory Sessions Practical Sessions in Regression Models Practical Sessions in Taguchi Techniques Practical Sessions in RSM For Whom The program is specially designed to help the faculty and PG students from various engineering colleges. This program is useful for the faculty of Mechanical / Production / Mechatronics / Industrial / Automobile Engineering. This program will also be useful to anyone interested in planning and conducting good quality research with an objective of publishing papers for conferences and journals. Resource persons Faculty members from Anna University and BIT.
